Obama Urges Congress To Pass Jobs Bill For Military Veterans In Weekly Address

By ERICA WERNER   11/12/11 06:04 AM ET  AP

Obama Veterans Jobs Weekly Address

CORONADO, Calif. -- President Barack Obama says veterans of conflicts overseas should not struggle to find work once they return home, and he's urging the House to follow the Senate's lead and do something to help them.

"We ask these men and women to leave their families and their jobs and risk their lives to fight for our country. The last thing they should have to do is fight for a job when they get home," the president said in his weekly radio and Internet address. He recorded the message Friday, Veteran's Day, on board the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier anchored off the coast of San Diego, where Obama stopped en route to an Asia-Pacific economic summit that he was hosting beginning Saturday in Hawaii.

"Standing up for our veterans isn't a Democratic responsibility or a Republican responsibility – it's an American responsibility. It's one that all of us have an obligation to meet," Obama said. "And the House should pass this bill as soon as possible so I can sign it into law."

Obama's beginning a nine-day trip through Hawaii, Australia and Indonesia aimed at strengthening ties and boosting economic opportunity back at home.

Before he left Washington, the Senate acted in unusual bipartisan accord to pass a small portion of the president's jobs bill, voting overwhelmingly to approve legislation to award tax credits of up to $9,600 to companies that hire disabled veterans who have been job-hunting for at least half a year, and strengthen employment counseling and training programs for vets and troops about to leave the military.

The House is expected to approve the bill next week, which would send it to Obama. The president's signature would make the veterans tax credits the first fragment of his $447 billion jobs package to be enacted – although it will accomplish little to boost the sagging economy, or solve the deficit problems that a congressional supercommittee is struggling with. Those problems are sure to await Obama when he returns to Washington on Nov. 20, days ahead of a deadline for a proposal from the supercommittee.

Republicans also devoted their weekly media address to veterans, with Nevada Rep. Joe Heck, an Army reservist, calling for leadership from Obama to do more for veterans and support House-passed legislation to help them.

"We owe it to our veterans to ensure they come home to a strong economy, so they can transition into civilian life and support their family with a good paying job," Heck said.

"With unemployment still much too high, we just can't wait to take bipartisan action that will help put Americans back to work," he said.

Under Republican Presidents, the wealthy prosper, and the middleclass foots the tax bill. Thanks to Reagan’s tax cuts, in 1988, the top 5% controlled $16 trillion in disposable wealth; aided by Bush’s tax cuts, in 2009, the top 5% controlled an astounding $67 trillion in disposable wealth, yet from 2000 to 2008, the number of working poor increased 19%, food stamp recipients tripled, unemployment jumped  Read More...

Vouchers for Veterans
By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: November 13, 2011

American health care is remarkably diverse. In terms of how care is paid for and delivered, many of us effectively live in Canada, some live in Switzerland, some live in Britain, and some live in the unregulated market of conservative dreams. One result of this diversity is that we have plenty of home-grown evidence about what works and what doesn’t.

Naturally, then, politicians — Republicans in particular — are determined to scrap what works and promote what doesn’t. And that brings me to Mitt Romney’s latest really bad idea, unveiled on Veterans Day: to partially privatize the Veterans Health Administration (V.H.A.).

What Mr. Romney and everyone else should know is that the V.H.A. is a huge policy success story, which offers important lessons for future health reform.

I have never met a veteran that would describe the VA Hospitals as "a huge policy success story." Never.

A short civics lesson: Only Congress can pass laws. Once they are written, and passed, the are presented to the president..who signs them into law...or he can veto the law. You can only blame the president if he veto's a law. You can't blame him for stuff only Congress can do.

He isn't going to do anything,it's all idol talk is all.He also went on tv and said we cannnot afford to make any cuts in our VA hosptals and 3 weeks later as i sat here watching the local news here in KY sure enough, massive cuts made to VA hospitals.I had an appointlent at this one a weel after that and they were not kdding.Where there were 3-4 people manning the desks of my primary care physician who I';v been seeing since 92 there was oly onr person.Where there were 2-3 nureses there was only one, where there was 20 doctors minimum there was only mine and where there ws a waiting room that was always filled to capacity no matter when you went there I was the only patient.Ya,he really cares alright.I'll be happy to see him go

Congress and Senate make the budgets, and State's are impacted also. The President can propose them, but they are the ones to to blame, if you are just another one of the poor getting screwed. If you are wealthy, well, of course, you will support the those who think we should have just gone to college instead of serving our county. Get your ID and VOTE!!

I'm not poor but I'm a 100 percent disabled vet draw s.s. due to a very serious back injury which is totaly inoperable according to 5 neurosurgeons so I have to say their right about that plus I get a nice stipend from the NSA when i worked for them, still thoughI have to do things on the side to stay ahead of the game so al IN al I make out ok,but there's many that don't thru no fault of their own. There's going to be well over 30,000 vets coming home from Iraq.Aside from those that are full time military the rest are going to be coming home to no jobs.Depending on you'r disability rating.I think less than 30 percent will get you limited health care with the VA.s for the ones that are ok,they get 2 years of VA medical help, after that their on their ownI'm on the nam and before that program so i get everything free from the VA,they changed the benefits though after the nam era which went down and not up,I do know that much but I'mnot 100 percent certain as to how much less cause after they made the change after the nam era they made more changes since then.Needless to say I do know they went down though and not up

More important though, is a President who can think, speak and express himself with the dignity due the position. I see none on the GOP/dried tea bag side that have those qualities. What I do see is pandering- let me tell you what you want to hear. We are in a deep world of hurt, and it will not get better, in my opinion, until we let the poor, the unemployed, have free and and or tax deductible job training. Until the rich get it that this entire society is going to collapse unless we educate the masses, using tax dollars to provide small grants to even start the "I can have a job process", we are screwed. Can't buy a home if you don't have a job. That kills 40% of our economic growth right there.

You've gotten the list of what Obama has done for ALL of our vets (below)

Now, show me how the gop has supported our troops.

I never heard President Obama say he only wanted returning veterans to get jobs. Contact the Republican Congress and ask them to Pass President Obama's job bill and it will help some of the unemployed get jobs alone with the returning veterans. Go to whitehouse.gov and do a little research about what President Obama is doing.

I know many vets, and many who serve now, along with my son. I get no sense that any of them expect an advantage, just respect and a chance. Having spent time with my son's mates, I would hire them all if I could. 3/75th Rangers.
01:25 AM on 11/14/2011
The whole thing NOBODY is talking about is that there are very few jobs. If you have medical training, yes. But we have so little manufacturing in the hometowns where our soldiers come from. It would cost money, but I would train these soldiers to do community service construction work. Everything we can do to not waste heat or cooling saves us. I like the idea of a government owned companies that make wind electric generators. Let's get specific on manufacturing something that will benefit our children for years to come, and employ our veterans.

You've touched on an excellent point. Obama imposed a tariff on Chinese tires and now that industry is recovering nicely. A bill has passed the Senate to threaten a tariff on China if they don't stop devaluing their currency which makes them impossible to compete with. It probably won't pass the House if it ever gets voted on.
06:03 PM on 11/13/2011
Let keep the vets (I am a vet.) in the military and pay them to work around the country. They make a decent salary and have great benefits. Don't add them to the ranks of unemployed; keep them in uniform and let them work!

You can't force people to stay in the military. There's many who have been waiting to get out, includingvthose who were stop lossed and forced against their will to continue service. They've served their time, let them go.

Then END free trade with communist China, end NAFTA, end work visas, and enforce manditory E-verify. Obama, the Democrats, and the Republicans all oppose any change to our trade policy. Until we start a party dedicated to America First then nothing will change.

Obama's kept promises:

Fully fund the Veterans Administration

Increase the Veterans Administration budget to recruit and retain more mental health professionals

Assure that the Veterans Administration budget is prepared as 'must-pass' legislation

Expand the Veterans Administration's number of "centers of excellence" in specialty care

Expand housing vouchers program for homeless veterans

Bravo, Mr. President.

Where I work I have seen frist hand how Obama has allowed corporations to use H-1B to deny Americans, including vets, jobs. Corporations that laid off Americans are still allowed to use H-1B work visas. And Obama has done nothing about offshoring to communist China.

So keep that in mind.

Where was Romney's military service, that's right he fled to France to avoid the draft. He also said his sons will not enlist because they're service is to serve him while he run for president. Now, Romney is using the fearmongering card on Iran when he has business dealings with Iran. Romney won't mess with his bread and bread.
