Penn State Scandal: Sandusky Had Access To Vulnerable Kids Via Charity

Penn State Scandal

By KEVIN BEGOS and MARK SCOLFORO   11/12/11 12:23 PM ET   AP

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Over the past 30 years, politicians, sports stars and community leaders heaped praise on Jerry Sandusky and the charity he founded for troubled youngsters, The Second Mile. It was a model program, and the acclaimed football coach was its driving force.

Now, prosecutors say that very success enabled Sandusky to find boys and sexually assault them.

Sandusky, 67, was charged last weekend with molesting eight boys over a 15-year period in a scandal that rocked the Penn State campus and brought down the university's beloved football coach, Joe Paterno.

In the aftermath, some are wondering if The Second Mile can survive amid questions about its role in the alleged cover-up.

Sandusky was a star assistant coach at Penn State from the 1970s to the 1990s, and many assumed he would lead the team one day, or even head to pro football. He founded The Second Mile in 1977 for youngsters from broken homes and troubled backgrounds, building it into an organization that helped as many as 100,000 children a year through camps and fundraisers.

Among the big-time athletic figures listed as honorary directors were Cal Ripken Jr., Arnold Palmer, former Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris and Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid. President George W. Bush praised the group as a "shining example" of charity work in a 1990 letter. (Sandusky's reaction: "It's about time, George! This is long overdue," he recalled in his autobiography, "Touched.")

But prosecutors said that running the charity gave Sandusky "access to hundreds of boys, many of whom were vulnerable due to their social situations."

He invited youngsters for overnight sleepovers at his home and took them to restaurants and bowl games. He wrestled in the swimming pool with kids who craved the attention. And he gave them gifts: golf clubs, sneakers, dress clothes, a computer and money, according to the indictment from the Pennsylvania attorney general.

The good-guy aura around Sandusky was so great that when some children questioned behavior that didn't seem right, no one took the complaints seriously.

Troy Craig recalled attending a weeklong sleep-away camp run by The Second Mile on the Penn State campus in the early 1990s. He was never sexually abused, but in other ways the coach's behavior seemed inappropriate at the time, said Craig, 33, who is now a disc jockey in State College.

Sandusky "had a way of, whether it was a hug or a hand on the leg in the car as we were driving, or just a way of putting his arm around you," Craig said. "I said this back then to people I knew. Everybody found it hard to believe, or that I was overreacting. I remember feeling as if I was the only one that thought anything was amiss."

Through his attorney, Sandusky has maintained his innocence.

Experts on pedophiles aren't surprised by the stories that have shocked so many people.

Richard J. Gelles, dean of the school of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and author of several books on abuse and violence in families, said pedophiles typically engage in a "grooming" process in which they select a potential victim and proceed to "break down the inhibitions and establish trust." Gelles said it is no accident so many people saw a "good" Jerry Sandusky.

Sandusky "covered himself by being so beloved that nobody would think he would do something as awful as this," Gelles said.

The mother of one alleged victim told the Centre Daily Times that that disconnect enraged her.

"I just lived with this for so long, and it killed me when people talked about him like he was a god, and I knew he was a monster," said the woman, whose name has not been released.

Thomas Day was 15 when he began a Second Mile fitness program in 1996. Scrawny and not doing that well in school, he was suddenly getting one-on-one encouragement from big college football players who helped run the program. Day met Sandusky only a few times but remembers him as a mythical figure around The Second Mile.

"I remember being kind of envious of kids who got to spend more time around him," said Day, who never witnessed any abuse.

Day said he has trouble sleeping this week because of the scandal.

"These guys took me in and made me in to the man I am today," Day said. He went on to work as a mentor with the program, served with the 101st Airborne Division in Iraq, and is working on his second master's degree at the University of Chicago.

Sandusky also had the support of many other powerful figures in the community. The group's current board includes state Sen. Jake Corman, and attorneys, prominent business leaders, and community volunteers. Corman didn't respond to a message seeking comment.

The grand jury said that Penn State officials in 2002 told Jack Raykovitz, executive director of The Second Mile, that there had been an issue with Sandusky and a minor. But the charity took no action against Sandusky because, it said this week, Penn State did not find any wrongdoing.

And in 1998, Sandusky was investigated after he was accused of "behaving in a sexually inappropriate manner" with a boy in a shower at the football team's facilities, the grand jury said. The report said an attorney for Second Mile who was also university counsel, Wendell Courtney, was aware of the allegations.

Phone calls seeking comment from Courtney on Saturday rang unanswered, and emails sent to him were returned as undeliverable.

The Second Mile said that Sandusky told the organization in 2008 he was being investigated, and that from then on the charity separated him from programs involving youths.

But the word about Sandusky may not have reached other youth programs he was involved with.

Sandusky held summer football camps – both at Penn State satellite campuses and at other Pennsylvania schools – for years after he was banned from taking youths onto the main campus by the school's athletics director and senior vice president. Both officials have now been charged with failing to tell police about a 2002 allegation that Sandusky had sexually assaulted a boy in the showers of the football building.

Sandusky held the football camps through his Sandusky Associates company from 2000 to 2008 at Penn State's Behrend satellite campus near Erie. There were never any complaints, according to a spokesman. Still, Behrend's athletics director said he wishes someone had told him about the 2002 allegation.

"You definitely would know that person doesn't belong here on the campus," Brian Streeter said. "It's a sick feeling even to think about it."

The very success of The Second Mile meant there was plenty of money for Sandusky to lavish on boys. A review of tax forms filed by The Second Mile shows that out of almost $3.3 million in revenue during the 2008-09 year, salaries, wages, and payments to directors totaled almost $1.4 million, along with $190,000 for "camp food" and $288,000 for "other expenses."

Sandusky is no longer on the payroll; his last payment was $57,000 in 2007-08, according to tax records. Over the years the payments to Sandusky totaled hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Records from The Second Mile show that the organization asks staff members and volunteers to sign a statement affirming they have never been suspected of child abuse. They must also submit a criminal background check. Officials from the Second Mile didn't respond to a question about whether any such checks were ever done on Sandusky.

The Second Mile said in a statement that it has done "everything in our power to cooperate with law-enforcement officials." But Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly said that during the grand jury investigation there was an "uncooperative atmosphere" from some officials at Penn State and The Second Mile. And Gov. Tom Corbett said he believes there will be an investigation into what Second Mile officials knew.

Deborah Small, an associate professor of marketing and psychology at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, said she doesn't think The Second Mile will survive the scandal.

"There's too much moral hypocrisy going on," she said. "No one's going to want to be associated with them."

Late last week, The Second Mile removed the list of honorary directors from its website.

"He was an only child, but at the Bug House he never lacked for company. One of his constant companions was a mentally challenged boy everyone called Big Ern. "I used to take Ernie to the movies or we'd go swimming together, and I taught him how to play basketball," he recalls in the book."

From Sports Illustrated (tracking.si.com)

Former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky said in an interview with Bob Costas on Monday that he’s “innocent,” according to Peter Alexander of NBC News. The interview with Sandusky is scheduled to air during NBC’s “Rock Center” show at 10 p.m. on Monday night.

According to the Twitter page for “Rock Center,” Sandusky told Costas that he is “innocent of these charges” and that he is “not a pedophile.”

“I shouldn’t have showered with those kids,” Sandusky said.

Sandusky was arrested on child molestation charges stemming from incidents that allegedly occurred between 1994 and 2009 involving eight young boys.

“I could say that I have done some of those things,” Sandusky said. “I have horsed around with kids I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact.”

Even if perception was ambiguous on the issue of brute physical force, the fact that McQueary perceived the boy to be 10 years old DEMANDS that police are called immediately. To me (but not to many others) it is conceivable that the McQueary was so shocked he could have left the scene without taking action. But it is totally unacceptable that he would have waited a day, talking it over with his father, and reported it only to head coach Paterno. This was opening the gateway for a cover-up. He was pretty stupid if he didn't realize that. And he was subsequently hired to be a coach for the team. Sounds like someone got to him. It sounds like he was a weak person corrupted by his conforming to the powerful people around him and perhaps his ambition. Would you, like him, work for an organization you knew was letting a child rapist frequent the organization's workplaces with young boys in tow? It's no wonder McQueary got death threats and could not attend the game after the scandal broke.

I am alone in this I am sure, but, I think to presume Paterno would go to bat for Sandusky doesnt make any sense. Sandsky, was probably forced to retire. If Paterno had the kind of power ppl assume, then that wouldnt have happened. Paterno would have said, NAh, we need him I dont believe Paterno stood up for this guy, Why on earth would Paterno want that kind of suspicions surrounding his program? He wouldnt. The relationship between Sandusky and Paterno, from what I have read seemed to grow pretty impersonal after Sandusky retired. I dont think Paterno wanted him around; but the retirement benefits included access to facilities, and since Sandusky was never convicted of crimes, they couldnt keep him from getting what every other retiree got. I dont think Paterno, covered this up And since MCQ now alludes to additional info about how he "stopped" the incident by his presence being made known, isnt it possible that Paterno is telling the truth?I He stopped MCQ from telling the graphic detail..? Paterno immediately escalated this..talked to the police, the same police MCQ gets credit for talking to. Until otherwise provem I dont see the degree of neglect in Paterno that I see in MCQ walking away/not calling authorities, inctead layed it on Paterno. And..Sandusly was no longer and employee..why tell Paterno? MCQ- Dad is a close personal friend of Sandusky.. that is where the answer to MCQ inaction lies..?.

The grand jury report that indicted Penn State former coach Sandusky states: "...[the graduate assistant] believed the sounds to be those of sexual activity...He saw a naked boy, Victim 2, whose age he estimated to be ten years old, with his hands up against the wall, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate student was shocked but noticed that Victim 2 and Sandusky saw him. The graduate student left immediately, distraught."

The "graduate assistant" referred to in the indictment was Mike McQueary, later hired as a Penn State Coach and still working in that job.

If the sex scene McQueary witnessed was a just possible slightly underage situation then he might have had some reason for pause - the world isn't perfect. But how could the McQueary go home and talk it over with his father if he had perceived the boy as being 10 years old? It's not clear from the grand jury report whether the McQueary perceived that it was physically forced rape. Sure, it is still rape even if a legally underage person goes along with it. But perception of physically forced rape would put almost anyone into action – at the least calling the police immediately if not physically intervening.

It seems there was a Republican cover up. Sandusky's board is packed with powerful Republicans.

In 1998 Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare investigated an incident in which the mother of an 11-year-old boy reported that Sandusky had showered with her son and may have had inappropriate conduct with him.

In Republican circles Sandusky was too big to be arrested.

The Sandusky saga just goes from bad to worse, I sense in my gut there are more details and victims. For every victim men like McQueary, Paterno and others character will be questioned. How do you witness a child being sodomized and walk away unless it’s something systemic within the culture ?

This was not a random player, McQueary was established at Penn State, his father loved Penn state and he returned to Penn state after failing in the big leagues. What happened at Penn state to blur his moral compass ?

There had to be some understanding at Penn state, unspoken so be it but it was prevalent enough to prevent McQueary from doing the right thing, right then. It was prevalent enough to prevent Joe Paterno from doing the right thing and numerous other established leaders from flushing this guy from their presence.

They were the perfect partner for Sandusky, the passive player in the cycle of sexual abuse. I didn’t see him sodomize a boy in the shower, I didn’t hear about oral sex with a boy in the shower, I did not see him fondle a boy. I know nothing of sleepovers, tickets to NFL games, there was nothing I saw. We banned him from the gym and trusted he’d not bring second mile children there out of honor.

I understand they didn’t molest anybody but by their actions they allowed Sandusky acess and opportunities for grooming victims.

Something smells mighty fishy. He is caught twice, let off. There is a woman to afraid to come forward with damaging evidence. He is finally exposed and immediately gets out on bail.

There is something more sinister and very troubling

It's a diseased society that we live in that idolizes human beings who may be talented but have extremely flawed characters. Sometimes it's hard to admit we've had "an error in judgement" and sometimes it's a matter of being well duped. Why is it that men like Sandusky can commit these horrible offenses on young boys but those around him are so blinded by his "star power" that they close their eyes to the atrocities? Can't help but to compare this with the late pop star M. Jackson, who while very talented as a musician, was a pedophile of the worst kind; luring young boys to his amusement park estate and sleeping with them...and now, that he's died from abusing drugs, all the boys he molested have been forgotten as his FANatics turn him into a demi-God? How deep does the corruption and denial run with Sandowsky... what happened to the D.A. who disappeared??? When will people stop being mesmerized by star power and hero worship to see the awful truth and speak out against it?
09:47 PM on 11/13/2011
Mcquery is a criminal and he should be locked up in the same cell with his pedophile buddy. If you saw your neighbor robbing a bank you have a legal responsibility to tell the police. You see a child or woman being raped you have a legal responsiblity. Animals treat their own better than that. We lock up individuals for dog fighting but let people get away for rape on humans??

i would like to see the list of donors and attendees of the charity golf outings sponsored by the second mile at PSU. i have been told by someone who regularly attended these charity golf events at PSU that sandusky shared a house with donor/attendees and always had a young boy from the charity with him. is it possible to believe that these well educated, intelligent men had no knowledge of sandusky's behavior? it is not too much of a stretch to think that these men were involved. This long term coverup of his behavior points to the possibility that his behavior was condoned, and systemic. It leads one to believe that this is the center of a child pornography ring with multiple molesters. also, if you want to look at the list of board members previously on the second mile website, try going to the "internet wayback machine." It pulls up old webpages, all you need to do is have the second mile web address.

I went to "internet wayback machine" and the following was under the PSU Golf Tourney:

A heat wave didn’t keep Second Mile supporters from raising funds on the golf course! The 18th Annual Sandy Kranich Penn State Golf Benefit was held on June 9th at Heritage Hills Golf Resort. More than 70 golfers, supporters, and volunteers contributed to the success of the event.

Matt DeRose and Nathan Lightner served as event co-chairs and were assisted by The Second Mile’s York County Chapter, chaired by Ricki Hevner.

Shipley Energy was the Gold Sponsor of the golf benefit.

Our Silver Sponsors included Capital Blue Cross, County Commissioner Doug Hoke, Heritage Hills Golf Resort, Members 1st Federal Credit Union, and Thomas Thomas & Hafer.

Also supporting the event were The Graham Companies and The Sides Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.

Our extreme gratitude goes to our two volunteer groups: Best Buy and Walmart. They provided on-course support with our games, refreshments, and photos as well as assisted with registration and raffle ticket sales. Our thanks to WalMart, as well, for their donation of a mountain bike for the raffle.

So of these people who stayed over at the house and boar witness to such behavior...they too need to be prosecuted.

Thanks for the research and quick feedback. Now that the pres of second mile has resigned the group (i hesitaye to call it a charity) is promising an internal investigation. Yeah i haveca lot of confidence in that being honest. Guess who they hired as tjeir attormey to conductvthis investigstion? The DA from philly. This is a huge web of pedophiles
And dont worry about your spelling. After all what kind of a person posts a comment on a message board about pedophila with a screen name hoochiepap?

This mess is just ridiculous. This college has been sweeping this under the rug for years and now that they have finally been exposed, they say a prayer out on the football field like that will wash all this away?
McQueary is at the bottom of the food chain here. Let's not forget that a janitor also was a witness two years before McQueary reported seeing a boy sexual abused, as well. He also reported it and that report also went no where. Sandusky offered to retire in 1999. So why didn't he?

I smell a Republican cover up. Jake Corman has to answer to this scandal. Sandusky's board was made up of Republicans, if they didn't know what was going on, they should have. Republicans are complicit in this scandal.

You smell a Republican cover up. The Republican Governor started the investigation on Sandusky while he was Attorney General. Smell again.

If Sandusky was charged with 8, there are very likely dozens more that he either got away with, or that have yet to come forward. It is astonishing to me that his bail was not set in the millions given just the eight charges.

If some of these posts wherein attempts are made to excuse or rationalize the behaviour of these men are any indication of general sentiment toward these young victims, and the heinous acts of violence perpetrated upon them, then I can see how these men were able to conceal their secret society of debauchery for as long as they did.

It doesn't help that the references to acts of rape are toned down to "molesting" or "inappropriate behavior." The man is a serial rapist of children.

I find it horrifying that so many people think rape of a 10 year old is something you report to your superior and let go up the chain of command. Rape of a 10 year old is something you call 911 over. Y'all got that now?
