Manny Pacquiao Defeats Juan Manuel Marquez In Controversial Fight Decision

Pacquiao Marquez Fight

TIM DAHLBERG   11/13/11 03:58 PM ET   AP

LAS VEGAS — The 28 stitches over his right eye weren't enough to keep Manny Pacquiao from headlining his own post-fight concert, which went on as usual into the early morning hours on the Las Vegas Strip.

They certainly won't keep him from his next fight, though that's the only sure thing when it comes to Pacquiao's immediate future.

He escaped with a win Saturday night against Juan Manuel Marquez, but that only tells part of the story. Seemingly invincible over the past three years, he looked anything but in scoring a majority decision over his Mexican nemesis in a win that enraged both Marquez and thousands of his supporters who packed the MGM Grand arena.

Somewhere, Floyd Mayweather Jr. had to be watching. Somewhere, Mayweather had to be wondering.

If Marquez could more than hold his own against Pacquiao by counter punching him every minute of the fight, what would stop Mayweather from doing the same? If Marquez did everything against Pacquiao except win, why not finally take dibs on next and finish the job?

It's boxing, of course, so nothing is ever that simple. In almost getting beat, though, Pacquiao may have done more to make a megafight with Mayweather than with any of his big wins in recent years.

Pacquiao has trouble with counter punchers, as his fight with Marquez clearly showed. And Mayweather is one of the best – if not the best – counter puncher in the sport.

"The style of Mayweather would get very complicated for Pacquiao," said Marquez, who has fought both men.

The style of Marquez certainly was very complicated for Pacquiao, who needed to win a few late rounds to pull out a decision almost as close as the one he won from Marquez in their fight three years ago. Pacquiao won the fight by sheer aggression, though Marquez seemed to land the harder punches, especially with his right hand.

One judge scored the fight even, as did The Associated Press. Two others had Pacquiao winning, 115-113 and 116-112. When the decision was announced, an infuriated Marquez stormed from the ring in protest, and fans started throwing beer bottles toward the ring.

"For me the best judges are the audience and you see how they responded," Marquez said. "I don't know what type of performance I need to give. It was a robbery once again."

Marquez may have only himself to blame for that. He came into the ring still fuming over the draw Pacquiao got against him seven years ago and the split decision Pacquiao won in 2008. He had to know most of the rounds were so close they were difficult to score, and that judges more often than not favor the fighter moving forward against the fighter moving backward when all things are equal.

Still, after listening to his corner tell him he was winning the fight, he came out slow in the final round. Neither man did much in a round when they might have been expected to let it all loose, but if Marquez would have fought a little harder and won the 12th round on two scorecards he would have gotten a draw.

"It could have gone either way," said Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer. "I thought Manny edged it out in the last two rounds."

Roach said the third fight between the two men – like the first two – was so close and competitive they should fight a fourth time. But after 36 rounds fought in much the same style at three different weights it's doubtful a fourth fight would have enough appeal to sell it to a wide enough pay-per-view audience that would allow Pacquiao to earn another $25 million or so.

What Pacquiao thinks about his future is hard to say. After getting stitched up, he showed up with a bandage over his right eye at the post-fight press conference, only to quickly leave after promoter Bob Arum – perhaps not wanting his fighter to have to answer what could be negative questions – allowed only two questions and quickly ushered Pacquiao out of the room.

What did Pacquiao see? He thought he won the fight clearly, and he has trouble with Marquez's style.

"He wants for me to create action and it's not easy to create action when he's waiting for a good shot," Pacquiao said. "He's a very good counter puncher."

So, of course, is Mayweather, who also possesses defensive abilities that the 38-year-old Marquez can only dream about. Mayweather dominated Marquez when they fought, though the fact Pacquiao had a lot of trouble with him may be more a style issue than anything. Styles do make fights, as the old boxing axiom goes, and Pacquiao's style matched up with that of Marquez almost guarantees close, competitive rounds.

Still, the fight was entertaining, a chess match fought with gloves by two fighters whose hearts will never be questioned. The sellout crowd at the MGM Grand was on its feet most of the way, cheering on the exchanges even if the final result didn't sit well with Marquez fans.

Thousands of miles away, almost everything in the Philippines came to a halt so Pacquiao's countrymen could watch their national hero fight. Crowds watching the bout fell silent as Marquez kept landing his right hand, and some feared Pacquiao might have been defeated.

Unlike the crowd in this gambling city, they burst into applause as the decision was announced. There were cheers of joy, but mostly there were cheers of relief.

All this arguing is getting tedious. This comedic take on Pacquiao's ring entrance was the highlight of the night for me by far. Pure comedy gold =)

I just watched the fight and don't see how anyone can say Marquez won the fight. He fought well and won his share of rounds, but Manny pressed all of the action and used his speed to get in and out. He got hit with counters, and the rounds that Marquez won he won on counters, but he was never the agressor, where Manny led the action. By the end of the fight Marquez was sontinuing to get counter shots but Manny was countering his counters and following with combos. Manny wins the fight easily by a round, but again, Marquez fought an excellent fight. He's the only fighter that has given Manny a real test over the last couple of years. If it was a 15 round fight, who knows.

As for Money, I think Manny would have as much if not more difficulty with him. I thought Manny would easily destroy him but after seeing this, Money would be faster than Marquez, and I dont see Manny sliding as well as he did against Marquez. Still have to see that fight.

If this is the best Pacquiao could do against Marquez then he's gonna have MAJOR problems with Floyd Money. Manny should have made a statement against Marquez. If not a KO at least a knock down or sending JMM into the ropes in trouble. But it didn't happen. It was a dull fight. IMO Manny has lost some of his mojo over the last two years. Happens to busy boxers. One too many wars. In this fight there were no great moments for either boxer. And when forecasting the outcome of a Manny vs. Floyd matchup, I see it this way: Marquez looked pitiful against Mayweather. But he offered stiff competition against Manny. And please -- this is not just a case of styles makes fights. Manny looked mediocre against Mosely too. Whereas Floyd made both of those dudes look like they wanted to cry and go home. Floyd makes EVERYBODY look bad. And based on Manny's most recent disappointing performance I could picture a frustrated Manny Pacquiao joining the rest of Floyd's victims. Elemental problems: Manny's a southpaw and Floyd has a superb right hand. Floyd is way faster than Marquez. Hits harder and will have no problem keeping that left foot outside Manny's right foot. Plus he's got a great jab, check left hook, can turn his guy, ect. Floyd is the most skillful boxer on the planet. Bear in mind I am a big admirer of Manny Pacquiao. He's a fine man outside the ring and terrific

Looks like it's set between Manny and Floyd. Personally I think Floyd was deliberately waiting on sidelines over the last four years. Waiting for Manny to burn himself out, lose a step, before meeting him. It's a sly strategy but an obvious one. And it could make all the difference since I do see a slight shifting down in Manny's leg movement compared to the days when he beat Hatton and De LaHoya .

I so agree... only a Pacquiao devote can score this fight for the pacman... Marquez got robbed, again! I wish he could sue the athletic commission... I'm not even a fan of Marquez and I had him winning easy. I can't see how people can see pac winning that fight... it just goes to show you... people just want to see what they want to see. It's another sad day in boxing history... what a joke!

pac kicked marquez's butt 3 times, four knockdowns total, outpunched him and did more.
the first fight one judge made a scoring error should have been a 10-6 round for the 3 knockdowns, which would have given Pac the win, marquez did nothing but back pedal.

let me give you a reality check, Paquaio landed more punches, was the aggressor, did more damage as evidenced by Marq. f#$ked up face, won more rounds, the only controversy is people making it a controversey.

ok pacman won the fight, he lost his rounds that night, but look at marquez's face both eyes were swollen at the end of the fight. pacman won fair and square, mayweather is weak for not want to fight pacman because he knows pacman is not afraid to come at him swinging, and oscar del la hoya is the one that made mayweather, i didnt hear who mayweather is until they fought,i dont understand how come freddie roach doesnt reach to get this fight done. people want to see this, mayweather know he get dominated once he saw how cotto's face looked and how magaritto look. and yes people marquez did lose and lost by himself. he should of stuck to drinking his pee maybe he would of had a chance.

Sorry, but the best judges are not the audience members when the audience members are blatantly biased, on the basis of race, in your favor.
01:39 PM on 11/14/2011
There's nothing wrong with Marquez tactics. But it backfire because as a challenger, his tactics did not do any damages and failed to knock-out the champ. All the viewers saw was Marquez kept moving back like he was scared to be knocked-out. Just scoring points to win a title is not good enough for me to be the champ. And with all the punches he threw and all Pacman got was a cut lip and an unintentional headbutt (doesn't count). Marquez as a challenger doesn't deserve the belt and judges agree with me. Marquez needs to show that he's hungry for that belt. He fought last night like he just want to last to 12 rounds without getting knock-out; and maybe score points along the way. Not one whole round did I ever see Marquez show Pacman that there's a new champ in the ring. A few seconds here and there in one or two rounds to score points here and there are not going to cut it to be a true champ. Then Marquez gave up on the last two rounds made him look like a challenger instead of a champ! Two judges think so too.
12:34 PM on 11/14/2011
the mexicans in the crowd had no class, what poor sports.
12:31 PM on 11/14/2011
why would marquez go into a shell in the 11 and 12? nacho this is on you buddy, telling your fighter he is winning and to stay away in a close fight against the champ? gimme a break, you have to come out and take it, i had the fight even through 10 and manny clearly won the last 2. there is no controversy

I agree with you - in a championship fight you can't go into a shell during the final rounds. Especially with a high price tag fight like this. There is NO controversy, this was Marquez's fight to win and he had it, but he couldn't seal the deal against a Pac Man not at his best. Can't fault the judges in this one either. Had he kept up his onslaught, the cards would have went in his favor.

Non issue. Sorry Marquez fans, but he blew it in the final rounds.

Compubox numbers prove you wrong. Manny threw more, Manny landed more. The 'Box doesn't lie. Poor Juan....he needs to be reminded by his handlers that the fight lasts 12 rounds, not eight.
02:09 PM on 11/16/2011
i justed watched the fight again and having thought first time round JMM won by a big margin i only have him winning by 2 rounds. very close fight with rounds that could have gone either way (most of which i egded towards the champ). Most of pacmans rounds were won on 1 criteria of boxing scoring, amount of punches landed. Pro boxing is scored by punches landed (pacman) Ring generalship (marquez) power punches (marquez) not to mention being able to make your game plan work. if it was just punches landed they would be wearing headgear with a amatuer score board at the bottom of the screen. and aggresive boxing still needs to be smart aggresion not get picked of the most of the time

Watch the bout again and you will see why the actual punch stats don't jive with your opinion.

You will notice that many of the punches that less knowledgeable spectators originally thought were landing blows, were actually blocked by Manny or just grazed the head and shoulders as a result of defense.

Those glancing blows and punches that connects with Manny's gloves are NOT scoring blows.

Okay, don't be so sensitive. I told you I'm no expert on boxing. Okay, you are the expert, but I disagree that Marquez didn't land a number of substantive blows. Pacquiao may have blocked a bunch of them because he's lightening fast and very agile, but I say Marquez knocks him out if they fight again. I've seen him knock Pacquiao daffy before. I've seen a look on Pacquiao's face like he was getting ready to hit the canvas. I've seen Barrara (spelling?) take it to him too. I didn't watch Morales beat him, but I bet Mayweather does. Mayweather's too big, too fast, and too smooth for him. Pacquiao is lightening fast, agile, hits hard, and dam^ good. But even at the least, Mayweather is just too big and too aggressive for him. (But again, I'm not the expert...So educate me...Please!).

Manny seemingly getting the better of it, but neither man is throwing much. Hard shot lands for Manny. Good left to the dome from Pacquiao. Left to the body from Márquez. Good digging combo from Márquez. Huge left misses from Manny. Good lead left from Pacquiao
