Panda Poo The Secret Ingredient In World's Most Expensive Tea (VIDEO)

First Posted: 11/14/11 03:25 PM ET Updated: 01/19/12 05:57 PM ET

One may imagine that the world's most expensive tea might have some curative properties, but using panda feces as a fertilizer definitely seems a little bizarre. An Yashi, a college lecturer at Sinchuan University who is developing the tea, explains, "Pandas have a very poor digestive system and only absorb about 30 percent of everything they eat. That means their excrement is rich in fibres and nutrients."

Yashi believes that his tea blend may be able to fetch up to about $36,000 per pound. He collects the excrement from a panda breeding center in southern China.

Somewhat similarly, the world's most expensive coffee comes from the droppings of the civet, a cat-like mammal. Who knew that feces could be the key to such delicacies?

Quick Poll

Would you eat tea fertilized with panda excrement?

Sure, if it tastes good!

No way, I like my tea fertilizer to be feces-free.

Pandas eat bamboo shoots. You can make synthetic panda poo by feeding bamboo shoots to a pig.
Or you can "compost" bamboo leaves and grow your tea plants in that. But, buying this synthetic panda poo tea means you've probably been bamboozeled. Or you could simply drink oolong tea which is the best anyhow. The secret to brewing good hot tea is to add a dash of salt to the water....Alfred-

reminds me of that line in a Cheech and Chong movie many years ago, about a dog eating his "Stash" and how it smoked better after it went thru the dog's digestive processes... all in all, I'd say Ewwww.

Anyone who eats organic, eats food that is fertilized by animal poop. Sorry to break it to the 45% that seem to think this is poop tea and the tea they drink is not.

they are trying to be competitive with the cat poo coffee or something?

Considering the water you get in bottles has a small amount of animal feces in it and the chocalate bar you eat has animal legs and other parts in that, whats the big deal if tea leaves are fertilized with panda dung. I have a feeling this story is just here to fill space....
