Alabama Immigration Law: Police Arrest 13 Protesting Controversial Legislation

Alabama Immigration Law

BOB JOHNSON   11/15/11 08:33 PM ET   AP

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Police arrested 13 protesters in Alabama's capital Tuesday as they demonstrated against the state's strict new law clamping down on illegal immigrants.

About 100 people, most of them Hispanic and college-aged, chanted slogans as they marched in light rain around the state Capitol and to the adjacent Statehouse where the legislature works.

"Undocumented, unafraid," "No papers, no fear, immigrants are marching here," and "Ain't no power like the power of the people," were among the slogans the protestors chanted as they marched. Later, some were hauled off to jail in a yellow bus normally used by the city parks and recreation department.

Some sat down on Union Street between the Statehouse and the Capitol when police approached and warned them in English and Spanish that they would be arrested if they didn't move.

None did and police arrested 11 demonstrators, tying their hand with yellow straps and loading them into the bus.

Federal courts have blocked parts of the Republican-backed law from taking effect, but both supporters and critics still call it the nation's toughest state law against illegal immigration. The Obama administration opposes the law, which is calls an overreach by the state.

One of those arrested was 19-year-old Catalina Rios, a student at Henry Ford Community College in Detroit. She identified herself an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Looking like a typical American teenager with her long dark hair in a ponytail, Rios said she knew there was a possibility she might be deported as she sat in the street waiting to be arrested.

"I know that I live in fear every single day of that, so this is no different," Rios said. "I'm doing this for all the immigrant students who struggle every day."

A Montgomery attorney who volunteered to represent those arrested, Mike Winter, said he understood they were mostly being charged with disturbing the peace, but also could be held for immigration officials.

After walking all the way around the Capitol one time, about 20 protesters entered the Statehouse and went up to the seventh-floor office of state Sen. Scott Beason, R-Gardendale, a key proponent of the law.

Once downstairs, two of the demonstrators – college students Ernesto Zumaya, 24, of Los Angeles and Caesar Marroquin, 21, of Philadelphia – linked arms and sat down on the floor of the main lobby. They vowed not to leave until Beason responded to their concerns. Beason did not respond to the protest and Zumaya and Marroquin were arrested peacefully when the building closed for the day.

Both said they are immigrants from Mexico without papers who have lived in the U.S. most of their lives. Marroquin said he always wanted to be a U.S. Marine.

Beason said later that he was not in his office Tuesday afternoon and did not immediately get the message except being told there were people at the Statehouse to see him.

Beason defended the law when asked about the protest.

"My intention is to enforce what's already in place in federal law," Beason said. "I make no apologies. I'm trying to do what I feel is best for the people of Alabama."

A leader of the protest, Mohammad Abdollahi, who said he was an immigrant without papers from Iran who lives in Bessemer, explained that the purpose of the demonstration was for their voice "to be heard."

Alabama didn’t even have a lot of immigrants .They did not even have a problem- the governor is out to make points with the people and its working .Its all about power and hatred for a certain race of people. I am from Alabama but I won’t be going or vesting this now hateful state. All these public officials getting publicity and gaining peoples support based on a lot of inaccuracies and false tales. Saying the Hispanics are hurting the economy is bull, saying they are getting food stamps & other government benefits is another. The number is very small. Go to these places and see who is getting what and also if do you see a Hispanic they are most likely American citizens. People have been so brainwashed but it gives them a place to place blame they accepted what was told to them and it started a wave of hate and unfairness. These people do not understand how our systems work. They have to be taught- by us telling them and showing them. As hard as it is for us to get on these government programs and we have more education and computer knowledge than they do. It’s so elementary but a lot of Americans will believe anything if given a reason. God didn’t make borders people did!

You dont know what you're talking about. The town I live in has been over run by illegal immigrants !They are taking a lot of jobs that Americans want , but since they will work for much lower wages they get the job . Maybe they are not all illegal, but in a town of 15,000 people there are an extra 10000 to 13000 Hispanics. This all happened in less than 5 years ! A point that seems to get lost in all the protestingis :ILLEGAL means ILLEGAL !!!!!!! They are by definition CRIMINALS !!!!!Send them home and let them immigrate the legal way. Takes too long you say ??? For good reason ! Why should Hispanics be allowed to invade our borders and then demand citizenship ?GET REAL then GET OUT !!!! Mexico has borders...why dont you go down across their border and see how far you get. If you really are from Alabama , please leave if you dont like it here ! DEPORT ILLEGALS....FROM ANY COUNTRY ! ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL !!!!

Illegal immigration is hurting everyone especially the tax payers. Businesses such as hospitals are closing or cutting back services, they cannot service all the non-paying customers, which most are illegal. Federal and local governments are handing out checks to illegal immigrants like it was their own money. And people who have right to that money can't get it.

Most illegal immigrants are using fake federal papers, which is a felony. And federal and local governments refuse to do anything. In my opinion states need to make laws to protect their citizens without violating anyone’s civil and constitutional rights. Look at our prisons, out streets and neighborhoods. Who is paying for the crimes, and the imprisonment of these illegal immigrants? Not the government. They are more concerned about their lavish parties, discreet sexual gratifications and their vacations, paid for by the taxpayers. When our federal government, which is supposed to be by the people, for the people and of the people is no longer protecting our life, property, constitutional, civil and basic rights. It is no longer our government.

This can be seen all around you all you have to do is open your eyes.

Listen to news that is not being suppressed. People have had enough. Just look at the world around you. They are also tired of their government. There is unrest everywhere you turn.
07:31 PM on 12/17/2011
Well spoken my Friend ! I cant believe Americans are willing to sit back and do nothing while their Country is slowly being taken over and our Government does nothing ! Except throw more parties. Most politicians are only interested in being re-elected , look at our President ! His lies started the first day in office. I just hope our people will wake up and hole the politicians accountable ! We need our laws enforced !

Has nothing to do with race creed or color in any way as all races creeds and colors are america always have been and will be.Most Americans want the undocumented people from outside the usa to come here the correct way .I know many people of all colors from mexican to chineese to african ,to cuban and let me assure you they come from all outside nations. The american people want to be rid of programs that that drain public coffers and US citizens rights for those that are here illegally regardless of what country they hail from. America needs and imigration cap like alot of the world countries have currently .Its long past the point of need.
11:03 PM on 11/16/2011
This is actually funny when they list the people arrested. They are not from AL, nor are they US citizens. So since when do foreign citizens get to demand things of American legislators. Think that they should vote too?

If the cops check the males, I believe that they will find that they have not registered for the draft. NOT doing so is a FELONY and they should be turned over to the Feds for prosecution for this felony and deported.

they are human beings and deserve to be treated as such. They are not demanding anything. They want the laws to be more human and make it more affordable to get papers. You think they wouldnt rather do it the right way? Then you do not know these people but I do!
01:10 AM on 12/18/2011
They are treated as human beings, criminal human beings, but very humanely. They get three hot meals and a cot. That is hardly inhumane and they get air conditioning too. That is a LOT better than our troops in Afghanistan get. It is free to get a visa by the way and I know LOTS of people who have gotten a visa and are living and working here, NO problem and they are all from Mexico too. Of course, they go through a background check, have a passport, and follow the laws. In FACT, my next door neighbors in McAllen, TX were LEGAL immigrants from Mexico, but they had to wait awhile and follow the laws. These people simply cut in line in front of my neighbors and in effect called them SUCKERS.

The FACT is that they do NOT want to do it the right way since they don't like it. So they instead DEMAND that WE change our laws to suit THEM. How would YOU react if I went to Mexico, and DEMANDED that THEY change their laws to suit Americans? Of course, Mexico would NOT treat ME as a human being, and would put me in prison for protesting, and I would NOT get three meals a day or a cot, and NO A/C.

The students run little risk of deportation unless they have criminal records. Alabama will turn them over to ICE, which will release them.

That is why they will be back again. If there were illegal alien protesters in N. Korea, you would see them one time and never again. No one else would get the idea to protest either because they don't play around with this issue.

When this country goes into a nose dive, they will get tough.

Its not about hatred, recism or white supremacy. Its about what is right and wrong. Its about us citizen taxpayers paying more than our fair share. Its about laws which have been in the books for a long time. Its about the survival of the United States.

you are wrong every time one of these self centered government official decides he wants attention the use the immigrant platform. And every time the Hispanics receive more abuse the children in the schools get beaten up , called names and where did they learn this hate? Is that the kind of right and wrong we are teaching our kids? You are paying more than your share ?? How?? The immigration system makes billions. It provides thousands of jobs.Judges, Ice, Jails,Border patrol. You people have tunnel vision you only see what you want to see and believe what you want to.

Now if only illegals would apply this sentiment to their home countries, a whole host of problems that affect at least five neighboring nations could potentially be resolved. Imagine if millions of the same people who are willing to die in illegal transit to the US stood together and fought against injustices in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. In fact, I'm willing to bet that a revolution in Mexico alone would positively impact surrounding nations as well as the US and Mexico itself.

It is not about laziness they work hard! They risk their lives to come here so their families can eat ,get medicines & clothes. You act like you are better than them. I get my information first hand. You talk bad about a group of people & then use the phrase Amen .lying and talking badly about people is not the Christian way. Their countries are messed up their governments are a big problem.Violence & poverty. They do not want a handout they want to work! Try research or talking to the people you are accusing. Some of them have family members that are very sick & the money they earn here provides them with the medicine that keeps them alive. Would you risk your life go to another country full of hate for you because of you don't have a piece of paper?. I know people that when they get here they are so eaten up by bugs , sick, their feet bleeding & walking for days in the rain or heat without food, then being robbed and had their life threatened. No I dont think many Americans would. But talk bad about others and place blame on them for our problems. Yeh Americans will do that. Its a sad world we live in and even sadder how we treat our fellow human beings

The immigrants I know pay more on their medical bills than I do. they get no free services. They work pay bills and they live together a lot of times just to be able to afford food and bills. Unlike us citizens who go get everything the government has to offer.Go to these offices and see who is getting the food stamps , welfare and whatever else you think they are getting. If you see a Hispanic be sure and ask them if they have paper. That will piss them off real good. You listen and believe rumors. I think you need to investigate.

These are brave individuals that are willing to risk what they know as their lives to bring light to a problem that needs to be resolved. It isn't fair to have illegal immigrants in this country, I wholeheartedly agree. But it isn't fair that the system chategorizes these people as illegal, allows them to live in a subservient manner, and punishes their children who have no fault of their own. When will these individuals understand that the system is unfair? It takes 12-15 years for a Latin American person to obtain legal status! Why is that? Because that is the best way to control these groups of people....they know that is illogical....who wants to wait those 12 years?
These PERSONS provide a NEEDED source of labor. The current system permits the labor; that is obvious, otherwise we would not have millions of undocumented working people here!! And the government is selfish, it obtains millions of dollars in unclaimed taxes for itself and ostracises the same workers that provided this money and labels ALL of them as criminals. Wake up Americans....don't allow the few that claim to be patriotic by going against this issue make you a part of their scheme. We are first and foremost human and this country was founded on the principle that we would be free from persecution by humans that were once behaving as these people are behaving now.
12:46 PM on 11/16/2011
The FACT is that it takes the SAME amount of time for all resident immigrants no matter where they come from. It also is outrageous that these illegals think that THEY have the RIGHT to live and work in the US based on their desires and that the American people have NO rights in this. If any American were to act in a similar manner in another foreign country, I would denounce them.

The FACT is that illegals do NOT provide a needed source of labor since that work WAS done by Americans before. We do NOT have a dearth of unskilled American workers, in FACT there are too many of them. The only thing illegals provide is cheaper labor than US citizens and take those jobs away from them. A few example of areas are the meatpacking industry and ag work. The average meatpacking worker earned $19/hr ten years ago, and now it is down to $9/hr. That cost the US a LOT of money in terms of taxes that were not paid on the higher wages. Swift was raided in CO, and lost over 200+ workers. They had to raise wages by $3/hr and got more than enough LEGAL workers. That meant MORE taxes for the US.
02:21 PM on 11/16/2011
No sir, check your facts again. And if there was no demand, regardless the area of skill, then why is there a problem now? These workers at Swift are already working at a new company....I can assure you. If the US wasn't benefiting from this it would not be allowed to happen and it would be controlled. These tactics of raiding a large company once a year is just to justify government jobs. A fact is that we as Americans enjoy cheap labor, cheap food, and in that is what is happening today....not your "theory". Don't get me wrong, I do not want anyone illegally in this country; but for that to happen things within the immigration system must change.

Where do you get your facts?? It takes some people 6 months & others 15 years. Not to mention it costs 3000.00 to 20000.00 & I have known people that have been ask to pay more also while they wait & pay this money -it is not guaranteed that they will get a card. There is a need for these people because Americans can not handle the strenuous work load that they do. They work from as early as 6 years old & their bodies take a lot of abuse by the time they are in their 40s their bodies have had it. As for costing the US a lot of money they also makes a lot of money they do pay taxes to live here, fines if in jail & some never file a income tax yet the employer does take out taxes. Where is all this money? Everything they buy has taxes. Immigration makes millions off of them take their money & makes them wait. Plus once they get a card they have to renew it so all that money as well. You want to believe the worst and you will- you have a place to blame the USA problems. But the real problem is poor Government, bad management, bad decisions, voting the wrong people into office, everyone blames Obama too but this problem was there before he was President. They also provides jobs for Americans.

Kali...you are only allowed to see what "They" want you to see, and that is what a few rotten apples do as they abuse the system. But looking at the big picture, these individuals are providing a needed service to this country. The majority of these people are not "demanding" freebies...they bust their butts each and every day to earn less than minimum wage and their employers are deducting taxes that never return to them. I have seen this problem all of my life....I witness how these people leave their families behind, risk their lives in their travel, and endure the contempt of the society where they live. I'm not saying that it is right for them to break laws, of course not....but, as a human being I fully understand their plight. Citizens of this country are good people....the majority, I'd like to think, and they are being misinformed by the politicians and some of the media into believing that the majority of these individuals come into the country and live high on the hog by using up all of the services here. You know there are a lot of checks in place to prevent this, otherwise people here would abuse this system....now, do you think that the majority of these people, not knowing the system or language, are smart enough to do this? Come on...if they were they wouldn't need to risk their lives coming over here!!

The immigration debate -- and it is a very difficult and possibily insoluable matter -- ought not result in the "Big Brother" result espoused by Greg34. The secure national ID Card, certainly with barcode and chip, would result in an internal passport system whereby the citizen can be tracked and whereby the citizen is mandated to have identification upon him at all times. This is a complete evisceration of any concept of constitutional protection against Government. It is the demand for security -- both false and real security and economy -- again both false and real -- that will result in the downfall (if its not already 3/4 toward the morgue) of the America we once knew.
