Kim Kardashian Just Before The Split: 'We Felt Like, Why Wait?'

New Interview Reveals Insight Into Why Kim's Marriage Crumbled

What a difference a couple of weeks can make.

No doubt when Marie Claire magazine sat down with Kim Kardashian a few weeks after her wedding, they didn't expect their December cover girl to file for divorce just weeks later -- especially given what she told them.

Meeting a fresh-faced Kim for breakfast at the Gansevoort Hotel in New York, the magazine notes that as she flashed her 20.5- carat diamond engagement ring, she's transformed into a "junior Elizabeth Taylor."

It's a fitting description since Kim is now ending her second marriage, but Elizabeth Taylor is also one of Kim's idols and one of her nicknames bestowed on her by her sisters. And as Khloe put it during the four-hour long televised wedding spectacular, "[Kim's] nickname isn't Elizabeth Taylor for the diamonds."

Although there are allegations that Kim's wedding was a sham -- allegations both she and her lawyer deny -- it's hard not to wonder exactly what changed so quickly, when just weeks before Kim told Marie Claire:

"We felt like, 'Why wait?' it's fun to have a partner who understand your life and lets you be you."

It seems like Kim has since answered her own question, but it's a lesson one might have thought she'd already learned -- until you realize she merely shrugs off her short-lived marriage to music producer Damon Thomas, as a youthful indiscretion.

"I didn't know myself. As unhappy as I was, and as happy as I am now not to be in that relationship, I learned so much from it: who I wanted to be, who I never wanted to be -- you take all those issues and move on," she said.

Understanding that Kim's attitude toward marriage is in general a little too nonchalant for most people, perhaps it's easier to understand how it all unraveled so quickly.

Maybe Kim really was still head-over-heels in love with Kris Humphries when she told Marie Claire, "I feel like where we're at right now is the best time in my life."

"We have a lot of trust, and I don't think either of us would do anything to break that," she explained. "It make life so easy. He's such a good guy; he is so down-to-earth, and it's such a reality check ... He gets it. Sometimes my life can be really intimidating for people, but he allows me to work and do what I've gotta do."

It's obvious that Kim values her career, so perhaps it all fell apart when Kris, jobless from the NBA lockout, felt threatened and wanted Kim in more of a traditional wife role, far away from Hollywood and reality TV.

In a recent promo for the new season of "Kourtney & Kim Take New York," the couple is seen arguing and Kim asks how she is supposed to have her career and live in Minnesota? Kris told her, "Baby, by the time you have kids and they're in school, no one will probably care about you."

It appears that Kris didn't really "get it" after all -- and that explains a lot.
