Restaurants On Thanksgiving: 14 Million Expected To Dine Out This Year

Posted: 11/15/11 05:01 PM ET

This year, the National Restaurant Association estimates that 14 million Americans will dine out for Thanksgiving, and an additional 16 million Americans will order take-out to supplement their Thanksgiving feast. The NRA surveyed 1,011 American adults and the projections are based on economic analysis and research conducted over the last two decades by the National Restaurant Association.

Although the number of restaurant diners seems high, it only constitutes six percent of the public. Fifty five percent of American adults plan to eat at their own home this Thanksgiving, despite the fact that average Thanksgiving meal price this year has shot up 13 percent due to rising food costs. Forty six percent plan to eat at someone else's home and three percent don't plan to have a special meal.

Besides the convenience factor, consumers' reasons for dining out on Thanksgiving are because they are traveling and don't have the ability to cook (22 percent), they prefer to go to restaurants on special occasions (15 percent), somebody else is hosting and they prefer to dine out (15 percent), and they don't have enough space to host a Thanksgiving event (12 percent).

Similarly, convenience was the main factor for those using take-out for part or all of their Thanksgiving meal. Other reasons included the fact that they aren't good cooks (15 percent), they don't have time to prepare food (10 percent), and the taste and quality of restaurant food is better (3 percent).

Holiday dinners are becoming more complicated with his, hers and theirs. In order to have all of us together we are having our family dinner Saturday. We tried our best to find a restaurant that would serve Thanksgiving dinner early, but there are none around here.

We were shopping to buy one of the pre cooked meals. One used light bread dressing and we are hooked on cornbread dressing. Using the pre cooked meals we still make special dishes and more desserts and all the precooked food has to be thawed and heated in the oven. Then, when my son in law received a turkey gift certificate, we decided, "What the heck lets cook the dinner ourselves".

Planning the menu is kind of fun.

Going through my recipe book was a treat in itself. It was a walk back through history. I found moma's old dressing recipe. I can picture her mixing the cornbread in my mind. There is a hot bread recipe of Aunt Merles that I love. Then there is the secret family recipe for apple cake that has been passed down for generations only to the family. It belongs to a friend's family, not mine. I ate it at her house and talked her out of the recipe. I make it ever so often, but it never tastes as good as hers did. I sometimes wonder if she passed it down to me intact. lol

My husband and I will be making a thanksgiving dinner, packing it up picnic style and walking to the beach where we will hopefully enjoy beautiful coastal georgia weather. Hopefully we won't bother anyone and no one will bother us, well maybe some seagulls.

I wouldn't want to work on Thanksgiving, so I will not patronize a restaurant that makes its employees do so. Besides, I enjoy the cooking.

Every year this number increases as fewer and fewer Americans know how to cook even a simple thing like turkey. Another great American tradition down the toilet.

I know how to cook a turkey, just choose not to as it's just me and my husband. Son, his wife and kids stationed far away so no chance of being with them so I choose not to cook and really don't want or need all the leftovers. Don't overeat that way either.

I would say the portions restaurants serve are usually way bigger than anything I put on my plate myself.

The wife and I usually go to a Buffet on Thanksgiving as our families are far away. This year we are going to the OR coast and do some crabbing then cook what we catch. Should be a blast.

Going out to dinner on Thanksgiving would be the last choice for our family. Nowhere in the world has as good of a feast as we do because we love to cook!
There are 16 of us and even with that amount we all take some leftovers home for the next day.
For us Thanksgiving isn't just about eating though. If we had to sit in a restaurant with hundreds of others we wouldn't be able to have some of the conversations we do without offending everyone around us.
I am so grateful and thankful that I come from a large and close family!

That's wonderful! I had those kinds of holidays growing up. But now most have died off or moved away. My only child is military and he and his family are far away. It's me and the husband now so we usually find something fun to do. This year we are going to a river boat casino for an afternoon of fun and have their buffet dinner that evening before we come home. I miss big family dinners, it's kind of sad sometimes but glad I had them once. And I'm sure we will enjoy ourselves.

Since we are having our dinner this Saturday, that is what we plan to do Thanksgiving too, while the rest go to the other family dinners. It is a win win, I hope.

As much as a home cooked holiday meal is a treasure, for some families it is best to go out for the holiday dinner. Less stress and more enjoyment is actually what people need during a holiday, not a lot of tension and worry.

Also, with so many people working and families with working parents, it actually might be the best option and a happier situation for all.

And besides, it is one good way to stimulate the local economy. There are many restaurants that are happy and eager to prepare a holiday meal and perhaps better prepared to manage the occasion, then working parents or stressed out relatives.

jonathanfar, you're one of the few on here that has some sense about him! Thank you for understanding the various reasons why people eat out on Thanksgiving! If there's not many in the household, that's a lot of work and cost to prepare one big meal.

And some of us are empty nesters. My kids are grown adults and have moved away from me. The spouse flipped out 16 years ago. Why would I cook for myself a large meal that will largely go to waste? Not to mention sitting there alone and eating, while behind haunted by lost voices and forgotten faces?

All my family has moved to different states so there is just my daughter and I. I asked her if she just wanted me to buy some turkey breasts and the rest of the fixings and she told me she would rather have chicken or eat out. I looked to see if any restaurants were open and there were two Frisch's and Golden Corral, she picked Golden Corral. We hardly ever eat out, usually just on our birthdays so this is a treat for us. This will be the first time I have ever eaten out on Thanksgiving.

this is my first as well:) is golden corral doing a thanksgiving buffet(cause that could be awesome)

Yes, I looked it up on the internet what restaurants were open in my area on Thanksgiving Day.

Eating out can be cheaper if you only have 2 or 3 people in your household. We can buy a very nice dinner for under $5 (fried white meat chicken - 2 pieces, large helpings of 2 sides and a roll) and it's delicious. The cost of food at the grocery store has gotten so expensive, it's cheaper for us to buy this than cook at home. You need to do some comparison shopping!

KFC on thanksgiving sucks..in this economy some might have to consider it though.

Anyways. Turkey is on sale at .99 a lb. For a bit more, it could be a real thanksgiving without the heart attack

What ever happened to just being thankful that you have a warm home to cook in and that you have plenty of food at a time when so many are doing without. I am just thankful to have a family and to know the Lord.
11:44 AM on 11/16/2011
Who said nobody was thankful for a warm home or plenty of food? I'm tired of cooking - I'm 50 years old and it feels like I've spent my life cooking and planning meals. I'm tired of cleaning up the kitchen. There's only the 2 of us here so why not eat out? I don't think the Lord would have a problem with it....
12:14 PM on 11/16/2011
Exactly! We are 53 and it's us and our daughter visiting from college. It's less stress and money and we're going to a family owned small restaurant which will help them out as well. Last year we spent a lot of money for four people to eat at home. I think Thanksgiving at home is for large groups of family and friends. We recently moved to Florida so this will be nice for 3pp.

the waiters that get stuck working holidays wish you would stay home so they could enjoy thanksgiving with their families.

The waiters are thankful they have a job and I bet the tips on Thanksgiving are pretty darn good!
12:01 PM on 11/16/2011
Depends on the establishment. A cheap buffet, I doubt the tip are anything worth working a holiday for.

Not only have a been a "server" which is what they are called these days, I have also studied the restaurant business for 4 years in college, received my BA, and managed multi million dollar restaurants:) That that it REALLY matters what you believe...just some info!

I hear ya but some of us who watch our carbs and sugars aren't supposed to have that stuff anyway and the one splurge meal is plenty. It keeps me healthier and my weight in control to only have it once. More would be great but.....
