Jack Abramoff As Reformer Raises Caution In Former Foes

Abramoff

WASHINGTON -- He was once the most reviled man in Washington, the latest embodiment of Washington corruption. Now, ex-lobbyist Jack Abramoff is trying to make amends by talking up reforms that seek to stanch the very venality in which he participated. The good government push comes as Abramoff, more than a year out of prison, is promoting a book and trying to re-inject himself into the capital's business.

Campaign finance and lobbying reformers must answer a question: Does the devil get a seat at the table to discuss good government?

"Jack is one of my heroes," Craig Holman, legislative representative for the reform group Public Citizen, said tongue-in-cheek. "He was instrumental in getting the sweeping Honest Leadership and Open Government Act through Congress when, in January 2006, Jack reached a plea bargain agreement. Now, while he's promoting his new book, he's more or less taking the reformist standpoint on this. He continues to be very useful to the reform movement."

Since reemerging on the public scene with a big "60 Minutes" profile, Abramoff has called for an end to the revolving door between Capitol Hill and K Street by prohibiting lawmakers from becoming lobbyists after they retire and banning campaign contributions from anyone doing business with the government, including lobbyists. He has also continued to explain how lobbyists exploit congressional offices for favors and to leak tidbits of information about wrongdoing, charging that lawmakers bragged to him about their insider trading of stocks.

WATCH Abramoff's "60 Minutes" appearance:

Abramoff's book tour has elicited mixed reactions from the reformers who once hounded him.

On Tuesday, a blog post on the website of Progressives United, an advocacy group run by former Sen. Russ Feingold, expressed cautious agreement. Executive Director Cole Leystra wrote, "Though it's hard to think of many situations where I would say this, I agree with Mr. Abramoff. ... Abramoff rightly notes that while Congress should pass real reforms to end the special relationship between lobbyists and lawmakers, support for the enactment of such reforms is often trumped by the self-interests of lawmakers and their staffers."

Ellen Miller, executive director of the Sunlight Foundation, previously ran the Project for an Accountable Congress, which sounded the alarm against Abramoff and other future felons like then-Rep. Tom DeLay back in the mid-2000s. Miller isn't taking Abramoff's turnabout lightly.

"To prove himself, Abramoff has to act like a reformer, not just talk like one," Miller said. "Rhetoric is cheap, easy. He needs to start naming names and giving us the documents that prove that he actually had 100 congressmen in his pocket. Then, maybe, I'd believe his conversion is for real."

Public Citizen's Holman also suggests that Abramoff's contrition isn't all it's cracked up to be. "He's not being sincere. The real Jack Abramoff, we saw him when he was able to operate in an unregulated environment," Holman said. "The new Jack we're seeing is not able to go back into that environment and wants to promote his new book. ... Nevertheless he's very useful."

Don't shoot the messenger unless you like the status quo. It really is that simple. I could care less if he has "seen the light" or not, but just about everybody I know wants term limits except of course for those in Washington which is exactly what this "devil" said they would be opposed to. The politician wants to keep his job. That same politician needs lots of money to stay there and thus begins all the corruption. The newly elected are damned from Day 1. I am fine with hearing all sides. So an industry having representation to present their side of pending legislation is perfectly acceptable. The problem arises when the big guys get big money to make sure Washington sees it their way - always. The present system assures us that the present administration is just as corrupt as his predecessor and those presidents coming will be corrupt as well. The public foolishly keeps believing an "honest" president is possible. The system as Jack describes makes that impossible. Democrats and republicans are both flawed human beings and that is shared by both and falling down is predicable. Jack is right that power trumps money.

The "king maker" knows what he's talking about! The amounts of money that influences these politicians is un-imaginable! He had over 100 plus congressman and staffers in his pocket as a lobbyist! He would of had hundreds more if left alone to roam those halls like thousands are doing this very minute! End the corruption, reform the lobbyist bill and end unlimited corporate donations!

HE knows where all the skeletons are. But, as it said in the article, he has to walk the walk, along with talking the talk.

Mr. Jack will be back to his same old games within a few years. There is too much greed and graft to be plunder in the DC area from our national govt.

Check out c-span wash journal in the am sometimes - most of their guests have worked as lobbyist, former conservative administrations and think tanks.

So look for Mr Jack to rise again. His cohorts are still in the DC area wheeling and dealing for govt handouts, and there are still tribal leaders wanting casinos.

Go Occupy....

You know, I'm hoping that too and was thinking about that right before I read your comment. I'm not such a hard-hearted cynic that I would refuse to believe that maybe Mr. Abramoff is truly looking for redemption. I hope he is. Sometimes leopards do change their spots. I won't go so far as to say I trust him, far from it, but I'm willing to say that people can learn from their mistakes.

No one has to trust him. You can see who has taken how much lobbyists money at:
maplight dot org

The Scotus decision that makes it legal is "Buckley v Valeo" which ruled "spending money to influence political elections is free speech"

As long as our lawmakers are legally allowed to take bribes from lobbyists, the majority of Americans will suffer.

He thrived in Washington because there were 535 people who are just like him. Throw in the headcount at the White House as well.

Won't trust this guy's sincerity until he starts naming names so investigations can begin. Once that happens, there might be an inkling of a chance to begin the clean-up that is so desperately needed in our corrupt system, which is awash in cash and greed. I imagine our FFs are turning in their graves at this current state of affairs - never in their wildest dreams could they imagine the corruption, greed, corporate influence, and hypocrisy of those who pretend to represent the people.

If a hacker becomes your computer firewall designer you probably are getting some pretty good security . If a sleazy car salesmen gives you cars salesmen tricks to watch out for would u disregard his warnings. Since when does a bank robber have to prove he robbed a bank to design a new vault. Hopefully the man went to jail paid his debt to society and has reformed himself. It sounds like those listening dont want to change the system. They like the corruption. How self serving to say we want to make reforms but we dont know how oh wait we have suggestions but my we cant trust the messenger so lets just keep the corruption. How convenient when you make up all the rules.

I'd be willing to hire him on a commission basis for every Congressional representative and Senator he rats out and gets sent to jail.
