Marco Santos, Chicago Man, Allegedly Scalded Toddler Son Because Of Dirty Diaper

A Chicago man allegedly was so angered that his toddler son's diaper was dirty that he scalded the child with a hot frying pan.

Marco Santos, 39, of the city's McKinley Park neighborhood, was charged with aggravated battery of a child in the incident, a class X felony, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The child's mother, Joanna Pawlina, 36, faces a misdemeanor charge of endangering the life of a child because prosecutors allege she did not take her son in for treatment until three days after he was burned.

According to prosecutors, the incident took place on Nov. 7 in a home in the 5900 block of West Addison. Santos had been cooking in the kitchen when the toddler reportedly entered the room and said his diaper needed changing, according to the Sun-Times. When part of the diaper fell apart, police say Santos became so angry that he placed a hot pan on the child's leg and genitals, causing first and second-degree burns requiring skin grafts.

The man then allegedly applied toothpaste to the burns, the Chicago Tribune reports. When the boy was appearing to be having trouble walking a few days later, they took him to the hospital, Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto argued in court.

Santos was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bail Tuesday.
