Rhett Felix, Illinois Teacher, Suspended For Showing Jon Stewart 'Daily Show' Clips In Class

An Illinois teacher at Eureka High School is on paid suspension for showing clips of "The Daily Show" in school.

Rhett Felix, a first-year government and law teacher, showed three segments from Jon Stewart's show to his sophomore-level class, The Pantagraph reports. Parents of the students complained that the clips had obscenities, sexual content and the perception that the teacher carries liberal bias.

"When he returns, he will be reassigned to another teaching assignment," School Superintendent Randy Crump said at a school board meeting Monday, according to The Pantagraph. "That's all I can share at this time."

Felix reportedly showed clips from the Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 episodes of the satirical "Daily Show," which discussed sexual harassment allegations against Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain and offering health insurance discounts for those who are physically active.

The Cain segment made euphemistic references to the presidential candidates's pizza business, like "You want sausage on your pie?" and "Want me to stuff your crust?" (WATCH some of the segments Felix reportedly showed in his class.)

Felix also told his students to do an Internet search of Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, referring to his well known yet obscene "Google problem," but warning students not to click on the site, the Peoria Journal Star reports.

Bill Lorenz, whose son was Felix's student, told the Peoria Journal Star that "a kid is a kid," and kids will only do what they are told not to do.

Parent Thomas Enterline told The Pantagraph that he didn't find Stewart's clips funny, but "deplorable."

"I look at what happened out at Penn State," Enterline told the publication. "Even though this doesn't rise to that particular level, I would ask that this board look at these allegations and respond with appropriate resolve."

Felix's suspension comes weeks after a judge in October upheld the decision to fire an Ohio public school teacher who was accused of teaching religious beliefs in class and for keeping a Bible on his desk.

Earlier this month, a New Mexico teacher was put on paid leave for allegedly issuing a "sex survey" to her students that parents found offensive. Although students later spoke out admitting to issuing the survey themselves -- and said they had done so for years -- Rio Rancho High School upheld its decision to keep the teacher on leave.

A hat tip to Mother Jones for bringing this story to our attention.

I've shown very selective clips of The Daily Show & The Colbert Report to my seniors when I teach satire...but I was VERY careful of the segments that I used--and then we read A Modest Proposal. :)

Just wait. Now that hoards of experienced teachers are retiring, these young sprouts have no one to tell them what's inappropriate for classroom viewing. We're going to hear more stories like this. I adore Jon Stewart, watch him every night he's on, but would never have shown his stuff in a classroom of sixteen yearolds. You can get them to think critically in may hip ways. You don't have to show them stuff with obscenities in it.

Administrators are political appointees that usually are conservative and Republican. They go into administration because they didn't like teaching. Education is not their primary goal, it is to keep their job.

I was bored the other day, so I googled Rhett Felix. I found a couple of comments someone made under the name Rhett Felix on a history blog. I'm not positive this quote is from the Rhett Felix in this article, but I'm fairly certain it is. Here's what he said:

"I have always wanted to have my student analyze a chapter on WMD from 48 Liberal Lies About American History. I would have students look up most of Schweikart’s sources and decide their validity (while the book was published in 2008 most of his sources are online news stories from 2001,2, and 3). This would give the students an excellent chance to become 'critical consumers of information.'"

If you aren't familiar with that book, it is basically a book that attempts to correct "liberal bias." It seems (to me anyway) that this teacher wants to try to get his students to think critically about where information comes from and how to decipher it. It seems he wants to give students info from both sides of an argument and let them learn how to find the truth.

If this is indeed the same Rhett Felix, doesn't it make sense that showing The Daily Show is an example of this?

When did school administrators ever show common sense about something like this, tho. I think it's a great teaching method.

The article states "paid suspension" and "when he returns..."

Why the fuss? Simply fire the idiot for his very poor judgement!

What, specifically, do you find objectionable in the three video clips in question?

Is it only the sexual references?

Or do you feel it shows a liberal bias? If this is the cause, what, specifically, is said in the video that shows a liberal bias?

Its because conservatives have a crappy sense of humor and absolutely hate it when someone pokes fun at their hypocrisy.

For some reason, I think your questions are too good and will therefore go unanswered. Trolls run from discussion.

...would they prefer something more "fair and balanced" like faux "news",,,,,,personally, i believe this is about EDUCATION and classes intended to make their kids THINK.....DUH......did they speak up in class and complain or weren't they even open to the discussion....yikes...good news, bad news for the teacher....kudos for actually teaching (or "trying" too)....bad news, it's such a small community...or small minded...or a vocal few.....that have now been able to libel you in your profession....pathetic....

I, for one, find comparing a teacher showing students a comedy program to what happened at Penn State to be 'deplorable'. smh.

i was thinking the same thing. it's like comparing apples to well... child molesters ("allegedly"). it's like we are trying to force all the color out of the world and make everything black or white.

Are you kidding me? I graduated high school five years ago and I had several teachers that showed Daily Show clips.

Cheese and rice! These kids are weaned with Family Guy and parents are flipping out about John Steward? Have you listened to teenagers talk? They swear, they drink ( get faded) , smoke "kush" (bsaked) and film fights after school using cell phones filled with sexts, smut and Subversive rap music. They have sex, get stds and huff cleaning fluids. They drop x , enjoy orgies ; they watch 2 girls and a cup and kill hundreds of ho s on Grand Theft Auto before MS. 9th graders are doing pookie in the John at lunch. I believe the daily show is elegant and engaging. Brilliant pedagogy in that course is rewarded with an awful stain this poor dude will never get out.

The irony is that I know this teacher and he's a Republican!

These are the same folks who purchase for their kids violent video games and permit them to watch R-Rated programs at will , chock full of senseless profanity and sex.

Wow...really parents? What are ya all afraid of? I'm just floored. Talk to your child about it, but for goodness sakes, keep in mind the person you are complaining about has a family too and to lose a job over that? Really? Goes to show you, there is a large segment of our U.S. society that just doesn't give a damn about anyone but themselves.

Oh no, forcing our students to watch something that may trick them with it's satire into actually caring about a presidential race. NOOOOOOOO! HOW COULD THIS BE?!?!
