Rick Perry Town Hall Attendees Asked To Prove Citizenship

Rick Perry Town Hall Citizenship

STEVE PEOPLES   11/16/11 04:47 PM ET  AP

NASHUA, N.H. — Rick Perry is done telling jokes.

After days of self-deprecating humor following another high-profile debate misstep, the Republican presidential candidate tried to continue with business as usual Wednesday in his first swing through New Hampshire in nearly three weeks.

It was a day marked by aggressive rhetoric.

Perry vowed to "take an ax" to federal government departments, "tear down" Washington institutions and "use a sledgehammer to get the job done."

"I'm the outsider who's willing to step on people's toes if that's what's required," he told dozens of supporters gathered inside a packed Veterans of Foreign Wars hall.

The Texas governor didn't mention his gaffe during a nationally televised debate last week when he failed to recall a fundamental piece of his economic plan – an embarrassing episode that Republicans here described as Perry's "oops" moment.

While supporters continued to express optimism in his chances of winning the nomination, the misstep affected even Perry's most loyal Granite State supporters.

"My heart kind of fell," said Cliff Hurst, a prominent Perry supporter. He said what happened has "made it a little bit harder when you're reaching out" to get others to support Perry's campaign.

But as Perry tried to turn the page, he also faced new questions about an immigration record that has caused widespread concern among conservative activists.

At a Perry town hall-style meeting earlier Wednesday, those trying to attend what was billed as a public event were asked to prove they are American citizens.

The forum was hosted by Granite State Manufacturing, a Manchester company that handles some defense contracts for the federal government.

There was some confusion about whether foreigners would be barred.

Citing federal regulations, a company employee sat beside a Perry campaign staffer at the door and asked people for driver's licenses or other identification to prove citizenship.

The employee, who refused to give her name, said non-citizens wouldn't be allowed in.

Another company employee, assembly manager Shawn O'Hagan, later said immigrants should not have been barred from attending. But he said anyone who couldn't prove their citizenship would have to be escorted inside.

It was unclear whether any immigrants attended.

While Perry's rivals faced similar restrictions when they held events at companies that handle federal defense contracts, the issue brought unwanted attention Wednesday to Perry's complicated immigration record.

Some of his rivals privately seized on his decision to hold an event at such a location, while the leader of a regional immigration advocacy group was more vocal.

"It's disturbing, especially given his record on immigration," said Eva Millona, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition. "I find that discriminatory."

Perry has faced sustained criticism over a Texas policy that allows in-state college tuition for illegal immigrants. He also has struggled to win over some conservatives for being against putting up a fence along the border with Mexico.

In a debate earlier this year, Perry strongly defended his immigration record and branded as heartless who would deny an education to foreign-born children brought to the U.S. through no fault of their own.

"I don't think you have a heart," he said then.

Outside the Nashua event, Republican Jay Godfrey, 25, waved a sign that said, "No government benefits for illegals."

"I'm not a big Obama fan," he said. "But I'm clearly not a fan of Perry either."

John Stephen, a prominent Perry supporter in the state and recent gubernatorial candidate, defended the Texas governor.

"There is no one that's done more through action to oppose illegal immigration than Rick Perry," he said.

Perry also released a new campaign ad that highlights President Barack Obama's recent comment that the U.S. has "been a little bit lazy" in terms of going after foreign business investments. Perry takes Obama's comment out of context and uses it to portray the president as out of touch, even contemptuous, of ordinary Americans.

I can't be hard on Perry for this. Heck I would like to see all Perry supports and for that matter GOP's in congress and senate to take and IQ and drug test.

Hey Rick... You're already president of Texas... The state that costs the U.S. MUCH more than it contributes... Why don't you just go back to your secession idea...? You will NEVER get your partys nomination for President... Your only chance is to secede and make Texas a sovereign nation...
It was what you wanted to begin with wasn't it? See how many Texans actually agree with you... I think most Americans do.

Rick Perry is a sad example of the over abundance of idiocy here in Texas. I proud to announce that Perry will never make it to the pinnacle of the Republican primary and therefore we have no real issue with his comments, since he is blowing off steam due to lack of mental abilities.

Is he usually this bad at campaigning? May there be a reason he is deliberately throwing this campaign?

I have never before seen a candidate for President the election of which would prove beyond a doubt that backward nuts have taken over the country.

And the GOTea this year is offering several.

Makes perfect sense to me. Only a Citizen of the USA can vote??? So why let someone who can NOT vote take the space of a voter?
01:22 PM on 11/17/2011
Wasn't aware that it was "reserved seating"
09:23 PM on 11/18/2011
Reserved?? If only a US citizen can vote why would you let someone who has no vote is? Why would you want to be there if you could not vote??

Go out and shoot Bambi... leave the heavy lifting to the adults.
09:26 PM on 11/18/2011
Wow?? Shoot Bambi. You are kind of violent. Like I said before??? Why would you want some one to be there that has no input on the outcome of an election? Do you think they would let me vote in Cuba?? Or Mexico?? Just a thought.

Since legal resident aliens can get driver licenses, why does anyone believe that driver licenses prove citizenship? They don't. They only prove the state of residency and that at some point the licensee passed a drivers test. A governor should really be smart enough to know that. That's why the ID requirement at a polling place, when one should already have a voter registration card and sign for a ballot, is absurd. Since the eligibility for suffrage is simply citizenship and being 18 or over, there is little motivation for an individual to cheat the system. I'd worry more about voting machine hacking and paper trails.

I am an American, and I do not suffer fools gladly. Nor do I welcome silly intrusions into my privacy, or slurs upon my citizenship status. This was billed as a public event. It was not a trip to the polls, where some form of ID might be required.

Even considering these cartoon characters for President of the U.S. reveals how little the Republicans care about the future of this nation.
You can say what you like about Obama but Bush never had one accomplishment that benefited this nation. I can name at least three for Obama. One being able to keep the loss of 6-5 trillion to this nation's GDP from becoming a Great Depression and seeing an unemployemnt rate of 25-35% .Another would be taking a perilous risk and killing Bin Laden and another would be removing Kadafi with the help of the global community in less then 6 months and at a fraction of the cost in money that Iraq took and with no American lives lost..
12:06 AM on 11/17/2011
Your kidding right? Bush kept us from another terroritst attack which was planned on Clintons watch by the way. Thats only one thing. Give credit where credit is due Bin Laden & Kadafi had nothing to do with Obama. Obama is the biggest joke since Carter.

If that fantasy is true what explains not one anti terrorism meeting being held by the Bush Administration until AFTER 9-11?I mean really eight months ,Clinton attempted to retaliate against the Al-Qaeda for teh Tanzania bombing but was accused of trying to distract the nation from the Lewinsky BJ affair. The" Bin Laden determined to attack within the U.S." intelligence is about as clear as can be made for a chimp like Bush. Amazing how you can move accomplishments from a DEM Administration and suddenly make it the result of some Repub that said he wasn't even worried where Bin Laden was after years of failing to catch or kill him. Oh we are not supposed to remember that embarrassing Bush speech . Right up there with "Mission Accomplished" eight years premature. The REpubs better start trying to get these accomplishments to happen DURING their watch. But as long as we are placing blames on preceding and succeeding administrations I'm glad you agree this Recession has to be Bush's doing.
