Fewer Americans Living In Middle-Class Areas As Country Divides Between Rich, Poor: Study

Economic Segregation

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/16/11 10:42 AM ET Updated: 11/16/11 05:04 PM ET

In the latest sign of a deteriorating middle class, growing number of Americans are living either in poor or affluent neighborhoods, not somewhere in between, a new study finds.

Thirty-one percent of households lived in either affluent or poor neighborhoods in 2007, according to a study by Stanford University researchers that analyzes Census data in 117 metropolitan areas. That's more than double the 15 percent that lived in affluent or poor neighborhoods in 1970.

Income segregation surged between 2000 and 2007 among black and Hispanic families, the study found. In addition, income segregation among black and Hispanic families rose much more between 1970 and 2007.

Sean Reardon, one of the authors of the study, told The New York Times that the findings indicate that the next generation of poor Americans will increasingly limit access to high-performing schools and support networks. And if the pattern holds true, affluent Americans may be less likely to interact with lower- and middle-income Americans, which could make them hesitant to support policies that benefit the larger public.

The findings underscore other studies indicating that income inequality has been on the rise for decades and that the gap between the rich and the poor is manifesting itself in America's neighborhoods. The top one percent of earners in America saw their incomes grow 275 percent between 1979 and 2007, according to the Congressional Budget Office. During the same period the bottom fifth of earners only saw a 20 percent spike in income.

In addition, the number of Americans living in areas of extreme poverty rose by one-third between 2000 and the second half of the decade, according to a study from the Brookings Institution.

And the boost in poverty isn't limited to the nation's cities. The number of Americans living in poverty in the suburbs increased by 53 percent between 2000 and 2010, according to a different Brookings analysis. That's compared to a 23 percent spike among city-dwellers during the same period.

The erosion of an American middle class could have dire consequences for the U.S. economy, experts say. Robert Kaplan, a former vice chairman of Goldman Sachs, told the Lawrence Journal-World that the country will continue to see volatility until the status of the middle class is secure. A September study from the International Monetary Fund found that greater income equality positively correlates with economic growth.

Most Americans say they believe the growing wealth gap is a problem. Nearly three-quarters of respondents in a poll conducted by The HIll last month said they think income inequality is an issue for the U.S.

For some, income inequality isn't an issue. Texas Governor Rick Perry, a Republican candidate for president, told The NYT last month that he doesn't care if his flat tax proposal leads to increased income inequality.

I think they were just a convenient name for the American consuming class of which, was quickly thrown overboard 20 years ago in favor of the global consuming class when the oligarchs decided the consuming class in America was getting too uppity what with their class action suits and demands for affordable health care.

What is the middle class? Is it anyone above poverty line, anyone who can afford two cars, one garage, and more than one television; is it a certain amount of money per household? If so, what amount at what amount of people in household, etc? To this day, I have never really had anyone state specifics on what a middle class person or household is? No one!!
04:30 PM on 11/19/2011
Well...when the middle class gets pissed off enough and this country erupts like Europe, don't say we weren't warned. And where will Rick Perry run to when they storm his house?

I've always been shocked how the poor vote against their own self interests for parasites who dont give a $#^k about them.

I believe you should build your own future and be rewarded based on hard work and intelligence. However, money has turned into a tool for controlling the masses.

The biggest puzzle to me and should be to rest of americans, is how they have managed to convince the masses it is their own fault they are not rich. As of 2007, the top 1% of households (the upper class) owned 34.6% of all privately held wealth, and the next 19% (the managerial, professional, and small business stratum) had 50.5%, which means that just 20% of the people owned a remarkable 85%, leaving only 15% of the wealth for the bottom 80% (wage and salary workers).

The system has the same feudal structure from medieval europe masked with an illusion of freedom. They give just enough to the working class to keep you happy and be "proud" of your work to keep you quit and keep coming for them.

This country has been enslaved by select few through the use of debt, and nothing will change until people realize how money works and demand a complete overhaul of our economic system.

The rich aren't getting richer...the middle class are getting poorer....with the government being the only growth industry (employees and salaries both), it looks bleak for those hoping that their hard work would trigger a better quality of life.....how's that 'hope and change' thing working out?
06:09 PM on 11/18/2011
change takes time, hope is eternal. we need fundamental changes to the system and that will take time. 4 more years.

People don't notice the drop in their standard of living much as some luxuries, like cell phones, personal computers and consumer opportunities, thanks to China, continue to abound. Yes, it is a disturbing trend. Almost everything inside Walmart or Target is made in China.

You've got that right, demilieu ! ! ! As long as the masses are mesmerised by a screen on whatever device, they're not paying attention to what's REALLY going on. I noticed a long time ago that most of the *new technology* games were geared to keep people INSIDE, in front of their tv's. I knew it was to keep people where they were-- then the gas prices sky rocketed ! ! !

The rich have their share of problems too. For some of life's problems, consolation will not be found in luxury alone.

1 in a 100 odds. Those are not bad odds for a lifetime of success. Instead of wishing for something for nothing or envying those who have a lot but care less about others, ignore them. I was brought up to think, if you want something, work for it. If you don't make it at first, try and try again until you do. Somewhere along the line whether it is 1 or a 100, you'll find your place in the world. However taking the situation today as something perpetual, well that's shortsighted and they need hope. Hmm. heard something about hope and change a few years back. Wonder what happened to it?

Exactly! And the sooner the government gets out of the retirement, housing, medical, food stamp and et al business the quicker we can take back the responsiblities of taking care of ourselves. The American dream does not come from the fed....it is ours to earn together.

It would be tough to pay a house payment, a car payment, utilities Insurance for everything, and worry about someone getting sick . . . all while unemployed.
Since I have all of my house and cars and all that kind of stuff paid for it isn't bad; I feel the worst when I think of those poor kids out there, broke and wanting a job.,

Travel to Newport,Rhode Island and see the summer homes of Vanderbilt, Astor, etc - homes were only used for maybe two months each year. Travel to Asheville, NC and see America's biggest house (over 200 rooms) of Geo Vanderbilt or maybe go see Hearst castle .
All of these homes are displays of great wealth when many American was working 12 hours a day and just barely surviving. It's much better today.
My point is gap between rich poor is not new .
Maybe America's first billionaire , Andrew Carnegie who came here as very poor child and gave away his fortune, said it best "any man who dies rich, dies poor".
Now, Bill Gates will gave away his money trying to eliminate diseases such as malaria.
I try to give away as much as I can and I'm not a rich man.

I'm sure that all the people working for the estates you've mentioned wouldn't be complaining as much as you....the services these estates take personnel to maintain and service....you know, landscapers, painters, contractors, staff, and et al...

When you travel as a tourist in the US for the first time, you are surprised how fast a "normal" area in a city changes into a deteriorated area within one block. And you get safety tips at the reception which areas you have to avoid in the daytime or nightime or both. Of course it is unfair to expect to be robbed by someone just because he is poor, however in the run down areas it is better to drive through fast to stay on the safe side.

The standard of living has been higher in much of Europe for at least the past 25 years. Most Americans would be shocked to find how well worker's rights are protected in France and Germany, compared to here.

The dropout rate for High School children in the top 50 cities runs at about 50%. Now what would anyone expect when this has been going on for decades? Of course there is going to be a difference in earnings ! Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!
