Steve McQueen 'Le Mans' Suit For Auction

Although it has been 31 years since his death, Steve McQueen, the man's man, ladies' man, race car driver, and top box-office draw of the 1960s and '70s, is posthumously retaining a presence. Recently, his Ferrari 250 GT Lusso made a cameo in the new comedy "Tower Heist," sporting a fiery red for its curtain call and an ongoing string of high-end auctions are proof that everybody still wants a piece of "The King Of Cool."

Now, his iconic racing suit from the film "Le Mans" is to be auctioned in Beverly Hills this December by Profiles in History, a Los Angeles based auction house.

Once owned by a 12-year-old Timothy Davies, who won the two-piece suit through a contest following the completion of the film, the suit has changed hands multiple times and is now being offered by an anonymous owner through Profiles' "Icons of Hollywood Auction."

McQueen's suit will join the last pair of screen-used ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz" left on the market; Bela Lugossi's iconic cape from "Dracula"; and the DeLorean from "Back to the Future III" in the auction set for Dec. 15-17. Profiles estimates that the suit, bearing McQueen's "Le Mans" character Michael Delaney's name and complete with period sponsor patches, has a value between $200,000 and $300,000.

Esquire reports that a pair of Persol sunglasses sported by McQueen in "The Thomas Crown Affair" sold for $70,000 in 2006, and High50 reports that McQueen's Rolex Explorer II watch went for $234,000 in 2009. According to the Wall Street Journal, a 1969 Porsche 911S that McQueen drove in off-track scenes in the film "Le Mans" sold for nearly $1.4 million this past August, setting a new world record for the price paid for a Porsche 911. It's no surprise that McQueen holds rank as one of the 15 top-earning dead celebrities.
