Volcanoes From Space: NASA's Best Eruption Images (PHOTOS)

Volcanic eruptions captivate millions, but rarely does a single photo capture their full power and magnitude in a single shot.

For at least the last decade, NASA's eyes in the sky have been turning their lenses back toward Earth to capture some of nature's most spectacular geological events.

While volcanic eruptions and the ash clouds they produce are certainly incredible to see from the ground, their effects are even more impressive when viewed from miles above. These clouds can disrupt air-traffic, stretch hundreds of miles and even block out the sun for those close to the site of the eruption.

Perhaps the most famous ash cloud to create such problems was one produced by Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano in 2010, which caused huge problems for European travelers and cost the airline industry some $200 million a day in lost revenue.

Earlier this year, an enormous eruption in Puyehue-Cordon Caulle, Chile had a similar effect, grounding South American travelers for days until the ash settled.
