8 Cold-Weather Skin And Hair Bummers -- Fixed!

The first day of winter may still be a little over a month away, but there's no mistaking it -- across much of the country, fall is in full swing with cooler, shorter days.

That chilly weather, especially when coupled up with wind, can wreak havoc on even the healthiest hair and skin.

"Winter brings dryness from every direction, which sucks the moisture out of our skin, lips, hair and even our eyes," says Jessica Krant, a board-certified dermatologist, founder of Art of Dermatology on 5th Avenue in NYC and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Read on for suggestions from her and other experts on how to combat some of the cold weather's most chilling effects.

Flaky, peeling lips are hardly an appealing winter accessory -- but once you're sporting them, it can be hard to get them back in check.

"Lips are especially susceptible to drying because the surface of the lips is technically called mucous membrane, and it functions best when slightly moist," Krant says. "The dry winter air sucks so much moisture out of our skin and lips that we usually try to remoisten it subconsciously, by licking. Unfortunately, this added wet layer on the surface increases the rate of evaporation, leading to even drier lips."

She suggests trying plain old-fashioned petroleum jelly as a fix. "The key is to leave it alone once it is in place," she says, "so it can act literally as a barrier to moisture, wind, and the dry air itself."

You can also try rubbing a sliced cucumber onto the upper and lower lips, followed up by applying honey with a Q-tip before going to bed, says June Jacobs, president and founder of the June Jacobs Spa Collection. And stay hydrated with plenty of water during the day.
