Hacker Group Attacks Cop, Claims Solidarity With Occupy Wall Street

Anonymous

Hackers affiliated with the groups Antisec and Anonymous said Friday that they were releasing over 38,000 private emails belonging to Fred Baclagan, a former Special Agent Supervisor of the California Department of Justice who oversaw computer crime investigations.

In a notice published on Pastebin.com, they wrote that they had hijacked two of the investigator's gmail accounts. The released emails include "detailed computer forensics techniques, investigation protocols as well as highly embarrassing personal information," they said in the release.

Over the last five months, Antisec has waged a computer hacking campaign against those in the law enforcement industry. In June, the group broke into the email accounts of Arizona state police officers,, leaking tax information, phone numbers and email exchanges. At the time they described the attack as an act of retaliation for the state's harsh immigration policies. Soon after the leak, the wife of one officer received a bomb threat over the phone.

In the notice, the group drew special attention to Baclagan's six-year email correspondence with other members of the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists, a nonprofit organization of law enforcement members. Those emails reportedly "detail the methods and tactics cybercrime units use to gather electronic evidence, conduct investigations and make arrests," according to the release. "The information in these emails will prove essential to those who want to protect themselves from the techniques and procedures cyber crime investigators use to build cases."

Unlike earlier hacks by the group, this one comes at a time when talk of police brutality and abuse is happening all over the Internet. In its notice, the group drew on the rhetoric of Occupy Wall Street: "You want to keep mass arresting and brutalizing the 99%? We'll have to keep owning your boxes and torrenting your mail spools, plastering your personal information all over teh [sic] internets."

Reached at his private number, which the group published online, Baclagan said he'd never been involved in crackdowns on political activists. He said he specialized in identity theft, and in any case retired last year. "I'm really just a nobody," he said, "just a local investigator, not involved in anything dynamic or dramatic.

The concept of punishing brutal authorities sounds great... unless it's on some random with no connection to the real issue. What's the connection between fighting for Occupy and terrorizing a retired identity theft policeman?

Anonymous has the right incentive, but sometimes they attack the wrong targets.
Anon, if you're reading this, finding out who actually pepper sprayed/attacked Occupy would be great. Or the protesters at the UC's. It would really help.

When the police keep brutalizing the people, the people strike back be glad it is just hackers. It could be worse. I fear for law enforcement people. The bad apples who are hurting people for no good reason are going to turn everything violent.

Don't kid yourself - these are not bad apples. This comes from the top of the chain of command. BTW, I am in no way anti-cop. The beat cop is a hero in my mind.

I hope they go after Mr. Pepper Spray, John Pike.

If Baclagan is retired and was a cybercrime investigator, why is he being targeted in connection with Occupy Wall St?

I hope these groups aren't using OWS as an excuse and a cover to wreak vengeance based on their own agendas.

With great power comes great responsibility. Anonymous have shown themselves to be far more responsible with the power they wield than those who we have chosen to give power to, or have taken power via force. To me, it's heartening to know that individuals like this exist, who are smart and clever enough to outwit the agencies of government and power, and throw a bit of balancing chaos into the equation.

Anonymous is in many ways the intellectual forebear of the Occupation. Many, but not all Anonymous have been supportive from day one, it is important however to note that there is a significant proportion of dissent among those who self-describe as Anonymous. They are by no means in a position to declare any official support, the groups affiliated with AntiSec and Anonymous are beholden to none but themselves.

That said they, in their activist actions and AntiSec actions are a group that organizes and takes part in digital civil disobedience. The darknets are full of much more than anyone who hasn't seen what the internet is truly capable of world ever know, some good and a lot bad. Anonymous is in a unique position to shine light into dark places, after all, they operate there and know it better than most.

This was no attack, claiming it as such is intellectual dishonesty. This was a statement. And for those who don't know, the whole point of AntiSec is to expose how little security there really IS online, draw attention to a problem so that governments, businesses, and private individuals will actually fix it. Trust me, Internet Security is the biggest punchline in the tech industry, and has been for ages.

"teh [sic] internets."

This is a clear example of the disconnect between the people that write these articles and the internet. If you've never heard of "teh", you have no business talking about anon or anything else internet-related.

Whatever happened to these guys messing with the Zetas
05:24 AM on 11/20/2011
They got their man back, so they sent the information they gathered to a secure source for safekeeping until they know they are safe from physical reprisal. They may wield substantial digital power, but they can't fight a war, and the Zetas are an army.

NOBODY "attacked a cop", that is a deliberately misleading headline. A hacker group exposed a Dep't of Jusice employee. That is what the headline should say, "Hacker Group Exposes Dep't of Justice Employee".

I agree totally. Bring out the Truth is not an attack it is exposing the facts.

Exactly. Occupiers of wallstreet are nonviolent in intent and practice. Others who may do bad things do not represent them. The headline here was troubling. Accurate reporting please.
