Kathy Griffin, Famed Actress And Comedian, On Life After 50

Kathy Griffin

The Huffington Post   Debra Ollivier and Evan Allis First Posted: 11/18/11 09:10 AM ET Updated: 11/18/11 04:47 PM ET

Though comedian and actress Kathy Griffin established her career in stand-up by painting herself as a Hollywood outsider -- most famously reflected in the title of her Emmy-winning Bravo series, "Kathy Griffin: My Life On The D-List" -- her unapologetic, tell-it-like-it-is approach to comedy and social commentary have earned her a growing fan base.

As a household name both in the context of the entertainment industry and the world of political advocacy, it's safe to say Griffin is no longer part of the 'D-list.'

She's a one-woman joke-telling powerhouse, with more than 10 critically acclaimed stand-up specials to her name; an accomplished actress, having been featured on everything from "Law & Order" to "Glee". If that weren't enough, Griffin helped organize a rally in Washington DC in March of 2010 to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Huff/Post50 recently caught up with the contagiously cheerful Emmy-winner and Twitter celebrity (she has more than 1 million followers!) to ask her 10 big questions in the slideshow below.

Griffin is currently on her international tour and will be performing in Australia at the end of the month. Tickets can be purchased at www.kathygriffin.net

Now that you're over fifty, what's the one rule you feel you can break with impunity?

Well, let's be honest, under 50 or over 50, I've never been a big fan of rules. I will say, though, that hitting the 50 mark just underscored for me that life is too short not to follow your bliss. And by "bliss" I mean sleeping with guys in their 30s.

My question:

Why did he stop doing stand up with the trunk of funny props?

Sure, if you're financially secure.

Ms. Mud mouth is the same after 50 as before 50. She and Bill Meyer ought to get married and have a demon child. Can you imagine the mouth on that kid? I can't think of individuals that deserve one another more than these two. They may be identical twins on second thought. I think in that case they would both be male but could be female. Not sure.

Okay, we get it.

You hate liberal comedians.

You hate liberals.

You hate.

Who is Bill Meyer?

Bill Mayer's identical twin.

Because Kathy Griffin is great, funny, hilarious, stands up for what she believes, is empathetic, demonstrates humanitarian feelings and is an excellent woman? Seems to have piqued your interest.

You're a poor judge at guessing a persons age, among many other things.

Sometimes her humor makes me uncomfortable, but I love her anyway. Out there, honest, and funny. Happy Birthday Kathy!

Thank God she has her clothes on.

Boy that is true. Seeing her without her clothes would be the rudest form of birth control for men. They wouldn't want to have sex for a year and then they would have to take something for the vomiting.

I'm still amazed that she got Michele Bachmann to admit to being a racist. That was priceless.

Kathy Griffin is a great example of someone being able to step back from themselves and laugh. Of course, she does all that as she travels to the bank to make her deposits. But however irreverent she appears, there is always a serious message underlying the humor: Don't get so serious about yourself that you believe your own hype. That would be a great lesson for most of us.

Is there any part of her left that is actually 50, though?
01:21 PM on 11/18/2011
Her brain has been handed down from the time of the dinosours.

That caught my eye, too. I thought reading the article would let me know in what capacity she'd ever acted! I'm sorry folks, but if you've heard one Kathy Griffin joke you've heard them all. I'm not saying she didn't deserve the Emmys that she got, I'm just saying she needs some new material.

@ Tanya OaksBrooks: Don't bother asking me what movies I've been in or where I keep my Emmy. That's the dumbest response I've ever seen to a comment.
