ANTHONY McCARTNEY   11/18/11 11:41 PM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES — Actor Robert Wagner is not a suspect in the 30-year-old drowning of his actress wife, Natalie Wood, and there is nothing to indicate a crime, even though the investigation has been re-opened, a sheriff's detective said Friday.

"Her death was an accident, an accidental drowning," said Sheriff's Lt. John Corina.

Officials would not say why they were taking another look at the case, although the captain of the boat where the couple had stayed blamed Wagner for Wood's death.

Natalie Wood's sister, Lana Wood, told CNN's Piers Morgan in an interview Friday that she doesn't believe her sister fell off the boat.

Lana Wood told Morgan that she has spoken several times with the boat's captain Dennis Davern and he has told her that Wagner was involved in her plunge into the sea on Nov. 29, 1981. But Lana Wood said she does not believe that whatever happened was deliberate.

"I don't think she fell, I don't know if she was pushed, I don't know whether there was an altercation and it happened accidentally but she shouldn't have died and that does stay with me and hurt," Lana Wood said.

"I would prefer to always believe that RJ (Wagner) would never do anything to hurt Natalie and that he loved her dearly, which he did, and I don't believe that whatever went on was deliberate. I've always cared about him. I always will care about him," she said.

Lana Wood wrote in a biography on her sister after her death, "What happened is that Natalie drank too much that night."

There have always been questions about Wood's death on Nov. 29, 1981, with renewed attention on the case as the anniversary neared. The case's re-opening and a public call for information are the first hint that the official account may need revision.

Within hours of the announcement, Corina said, several people emerged offering their recollections of what happened in the waters off Southern California's Santa Catalina Island.

But he quickly noted that nothing the agency has received so far has prompted it to change the view that there was no foul play.

Davern, said Friday on NBC's "Today" show that he lied to investigators about events on the yacht Splendour when he was interviewed after Wood's death.

Davern accused Wagner of having a fight with Wood before she went missing and delaying the search for her after she disappeared.

Wagner's family released a statement through a spokesman that said they trusted detectives to evaluate any new information and determine whether it came from "a credible source or sources other than those simply trying to profit from the 30-year anniversary of her tragic death."

It did not mention Davern by name, and noted that detectives hadn't contacted Wagner or his family.

On the show, Davern mentioned a book he co-wrote last year on Wood's death, but refused to say precisely why he blamed Wagner for the three-time Oscar nominee's death. Davern also denied that he was seeking to profit from interest in the case.

Vanity Fair and the television program "48 Hours Mystery" have teamed up and are including Wood's case for a television special airing this weekend.

Corina said his agency would talk to Davern at some point and other witnesses would likely be interviewed. He downplayed the role Davern's book or the anniversary would play on the investigation.

"We're not concerned with the anniversary date," Corina said. "It may have jarred some other people's memories."

Wood, who was 43 when she died, received three Academy Award nominations, for "Rebel Without a Cause," "Splendor in the Grass" and "Love with the Proper Stranger." She appeared in numerous other Hollywood classics, including "West Side Story."

Wood and Wagner were married twice, first in 1957 before divorcing six years later. They remarried in 1972. Her death during the Thanksgiving weekend in 1981 has long sparked tabloid speculation that foul play was involved.

Wood, Wagner and actor Christopher Walken and Davern spent time on Thanksgiving weekend 1981 both on Catalina Island and drinking on the yacht.

Wagner has dismissed any suggestion that the actress' death was anything more than an accident. In a 2008 autobiography, he recounted drinking with Wood and Walken at a restaurant and on the boat.

Wood went to the master cabin during an argument between the two men, Wagner said. The last time Wagner saw his wife, she was fixing her hair at a bathroom vanity and she shut the door, he wrote.

Despite various theories about what led Wood to the water, which she feared, he said, it was impossible to know what happened.

"Nobody knows," he wrote. "There are only two possibilities; either she was trying to get away from the argument, or she was trying to tie the dinghy. But the bottom line is that nobody knows exactly what happened."

Coroner's officials said at the time that she was "possibly attempting to board the dinghy and had fallen into the water, striking her face."

Wood was found wearing a flannel nightgown, socks and a red down jacket, and Davern identified her body for authorities, according to an autopsy report. Her body had superficial bruises, according to the report, but those were considered consistent with drowning.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said the agency hadn't been asked to do any additional investigation into Wood's case.

Wagner, star of the television series "Hart to Hart," wrote in his book that he blamed himself for his wife's death.

"Did I blame myself? If I had been there, I could have done something," he wrote. "But I wasn't there. I didn't see her."

Rj is touring with a one man question answer show as we speak. Think he makes sure certain people are NOT in the audience?

*** RW did do it and just because he has gooten away from the charge for 30 years doesn't mean forever and even if so, he will have to pay the maker.
**But knew information that the police have not let out yet, pretty much shows he was the culprit and if it was an accident as he struck her and even if he did regret it later, he still cheated justice to this point, but lady justice has a long reach for murder as there is no statute of limitations. Don't be foolish enough, not to weigh the Captains new statement and information, RW the long arm is coming dude, so be ready.

Why would Dennis Davern wait 30 before telling anyone about this?

I never believed Robert Wagner had anything to do with her death. I know some do, but I remember what he looked like before her death, and after her death, and after her death, the sparkle he had on his face and in his eyes,, was gone after that, and it took him several years to get it back. You could see it in his eyes, whenever you saw him act, or talk about his later wife, for several years after it happened. He was devastated, completely devastated.

I also read some post he married Jill St John right after her death, and that is not true either. They were married, but they didn't happened until 1990. You can not possibly think 9 years later, as soon.

I remember an interview he did some time after Natalie Woods death, when he was questioned about his relationship with Jill St. John. He told them she was a friend of both of them, and she helped him get over her death.

If they were married a year or less after Natalie Woods death, I would think think it was fishy, but 9 years later, seems like enough time to get over the death of a loved one.

Just my opinion

If something comes out of this, a lot of criminals who think they got away with it are going to panic. If he is guilty he was lucky to get 30 of his good years, for she lost hers.

I think something suspicious went on, but I don't think we'll ever know. Someone is covering for someone, that much is clear. But who and why are the questions. I don't necessarily believe this guy, though.

*** It is good the conscious of the Captain has prevailed in this matter and that just maybe the truth will come out, if it doesn't then who know who was paid off or shutup. Certainly what has been told in the original story is not true and that the truth after 30 years maybe very difficult to get t the surface. There is no gain for the Captain to bring this forward now except to clear his conscious. His book was written 2 years ago, so if he wanted to gain money why not do it before his book release, or why not attempt to extort if what he says is a lie. He is now telling the truth and hopefully justice will be done by the expertise of investigators. RW should just come forth and clear this up with the truth himself, as he knows what the real truth is. A loving husband would not allow his wife to simly vanish aboard a vessel, direct the cpatain not to search, then hide away until the next day.
03:28 AM on 11/21/2011
*** We know factually that NW was extremely fearful of getting in the water, that she had not and would not have taken dingy out on her own. That RW was a very intense and jealous person. That he was controlling in many measures of NW and their lives together. That he was intoxicated and was very angry as well as running his jealousy streak regarding CW. That the fight on the boats deck was out of control and that the Captain heard the argument as well as after RW yelling he heard something or some one hit the deck, which was likely NW. Shortly after the Captain could not find NW out on deck and approached RW for a search and was directed by RW not to search for her. Why the boat is small enough that it would have taken a few minutes at best. RW knows what happened and that after the physical issue and NW in the water he then released the dingy from the boat to look as though she had taken it out, but he didn't do this until after the push by the Captain to search for her and while the dingy was still at boat side, it was after the confrontation with the Captain that he released the dingy from the boat. The Captain's reasons for his failure to search and notify authorities are as well criminal.
03:15 AM on 11/21/2011
*** The original story is just simply made up and does not add up. And regardless of the Captains failure to act in appropriate manner before and / or after the argument and physical acts by RW toward NW causing her causing her death / drowning then pannicking and not responding to save her. The Captain also fell way short of his own actions by not controlling what was going on board the vessel and then not locating NW after he knew a fight had happened. * There was also the sound of something or some one hitting the floor of top hull of the boats deck and the Captain knew this was serious but due to RW direction he failed to properly begin search for her. NW never took the dingy out on her own, she never did not then or before. Something surely smells...it seems a cover up is now blowing up.

and she had bruises that could not be explained

This was a terrible, stupid accident, that's all there is to it.

The boat they were on is actually fairly small, I've been on boats just like that myself. With some drinking going on, and an argument that may have gotten a bit out of hand, it's completely plausible that she could have slipped over the side. Particularly if it was dark, and the boat might have been rocking about a little bit (it doesn't take much to get a boat that size to start moving about) . . . one wrong step, particularly if she was a bit tipsy, emotionally distracted by an ongoing argument, did not know how to swim . . . those would be exactly the circumstances that could lead to this type of tragedy.

As for Natalie, one of the greatest talents of all time, RIP.

This would be like saying Captain Edward John Smith, a naval reserve officer, and the ship's captain* blamed the passengers for the sinking of the Titanic.

this boat captain should be put in jail for lying to police

I need to clear up an error on my part, so much for remembering without research. The 2 movies I mentioned Robert Wagner co-starring in way back when were "Beneath the 12 Mile Reef"and "Stars and Stripes Forever." The 2 I had mentioned were" 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "The Music Man", similar movies but Wagner was not in them. As I looked up the correct ones I found that Wagner has had roles in124 movies dating back to 1950 when he was just a kid. So much for the ones who insinuated he was a nothing actor. Sorry about the error.

I believe it was an accident pure and simple, Maybe the reason Hr husband didnt want to search for Her was because he thought She had left the boat due to the arguement and didnt want anyone else to know. This other man knew this and never saids anything? I doubt it.
