Pakistan: Obscene Words Text Message Ban Ordered

Pakistan Obscene Text Messaging

By SEBASTIAN ABBOT   11/18/11 10:16 AM ET   AP

ISLAMABAD -- Texters in Pakistan better start watching their language.

Pakistan's telecommunications authority sent a letter ordering cell phone companies to block text messages containing what it perceives to be obscenities, Anjum Nida Rahman, a spokeswoman for Telenor Pakistan, said Friday.

It also sent a list of more than 1,500 English and Urdu words that were to be blocked.

The order was part of the regulator's attempt to block spam messages, said Rahman. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority refused to comment on the initiative.

Many of the words to be blocked were sexually explicit terms or swear words, according to a copy of the list obtained by The Associated Press.

It also included relatively mild terms like fart and idiot.

The reasons for blocking some words, including Jesus Christ, headlights and tampon, were less clear, raising questions about religious freedom and practicality. Any word could conceivably be part of a spam message.

The letter, which was also obtained by the AP, was dated Nov. 14 and gave cell phone companies seven days to implement the order.

Rahman, the Telenor spokeswoman, said her company first received the letter Thursday and was discussing how to proceed.

"It's a big issue, so it is being examined carefully from all points of view," said Rahman.

The letter said the order was legal under a 1996 law preventing people from sending information through the telecommunications system that is "false, fabricated, indecent or obscene."

It also stated that free speech can be restricted "in the interest of the glory of Islam."

Under pressure from Islamists, Pakistan has blocked pornographic websites and ones deemed anti-Islamic. Last year, it temporarily banned Facebook because of material on the site deemed offensive to Islam.

This is a nice excuse for the goverment to have even more control over its people. This is a horrible and violent country and region in the world. Can we now stop acting like the muslim religion is nothing more than a brutal and controlling form of religion. I am tired of hearing about these horrible honor killings etc and muslims say "well those are the radical muslims, we do not agree with them." Its garbage because you rarely or ever hear about anyone being punished for honor killings etc.

Dumbest job in the world: censor. It's really easy to get around prohibitions like that.

I remember somekind of study about english language: "As long as the first and last letters are correct, the other letters can be scrambled and the message is still easily understandable". So the Pakistani officials had to add a lot of words in their list, http://www.box.com/s/v9sdufn0vkm3im0bfksn and even then the only thing they achieve is the generation of incredibly skilled proofreaders and Taboo players http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taboo_%28game%29 By the way, I don't think that the idea of Pakistani officials when adding "Jesus Christ" in their list, was to attack against the Christians, on the contrary they tried prevent the blasphemous use of it.

what a waste of time and energy. people will just find more creative ways to express themselves. if i were Pakistan, i'd focus on more important things...like helping my citizens, making my reputation in the world a better thing and maybe, just maybe, progressing with the times.

i don't know all those seem far more important than the eff word in English and Urdu.

The misguided idea that censorship is a solution apparently is a universal pathology of all governments.

Oh, good luck with that. What a waste of time and resources. A shame, considering what the country needs to do for and with its citizens. Just one more problem with a country that persists in foisting religious beliefs on all inhabitants outside the mosque, temple, and church.

400+ yrs of science & STILL no evidence for a god

@ RiverWalker:

"Did I say anywhere that the fact Ghandi, MLK, Einstein, etc. being religious men are evidence that God exists? Nope! I presented them as examples of the good of religion."

You don't need a god to do good -- ergo, these people are not evidence that a god exists.

"Benjamin Franklin and several of the founding fathers expressed their disgust of religion, but unlike Thomas Paine, they never denied their Christianity. Look it up. They weren't willing to go quite that far, so no, he didn't see religion as "worthless."

Sorry, actions speak louder than words: They saw no use to include religion in the founding of our country -- ergo, religion was worthless regarding this task.

"Religion has educated people liberally, it has provided uncountable services, again liberally, it has established hospitals that provide health care for the poor worldwide, and all without insisting the people it helps convert."

And that's where you're dead wrong: Many of the services that are provided by the religious come with proselytizing of some sort ... you can't back your statement up with facts and you know it.

Any benefits gained from a religious organization doing anything a secular organization can do comes at too high a cost.

So, once again, I'm not convinced by your post: All religions are equally worthless.

People with less self confidence see too many problems around them. They ban one thing but create more problems without realizing the consequences. Pakistan is a poor performing country and its only defense would be to rely on a book that is too old, foreign and obsolete for them! But, what do I care!

Now if only they could ban certain thoughts...or so the regulators dream. Ridiculous in 2011.
