I studied abroad in Florence. So many Americans there it almost ruined the experience. Overall, I had a wonderful time. Just wish I made more of an effort to make local friends. I have more international friends from my U.S. college than in Florence.

If you are able travel and learn elsewhere, even if it is only for a semester, if you are openminded you will aquire RESPECT for differences. I believe Mark Twain put it nicely. "It liberates the vandal to travel--you never saw a bigoted, opinionated, stubborn, narrow-minded, self-conceited, almighty mean man in your life but he had stuck in one place since he was born and thought God made the world and dyspepsia and bile for his especial comfort and satisfaction."
- The American Abroad speech, 1868

Currently studying abroad right now in Singapore, only one week left, it has been an amazing experience. Everyone should find a way to study abroad if they can muster the funds and have the ambition. Don't be afraid of the costs, coming to Singapore was actually cheaper than the University of California.

Oh yeah...and traveling around Southeast Asia on the weekends and breaks has been absolutely amazing, such a great centralized location. Went to Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Could have gone many more places (Burma, Hong Kong, Brunei, Philippines, Taiwan, etc) if I had more money.

I'm studying in Copenhagen right now and it has been outstanding. It's not like I grew up wishing and hoping to one day see the mighty Denmark (every Dane I meet asks why I chose Copenhagen, they don't really get it either). But there's so much to learn from a small, successful country like this! Not only that, but the city of Copenhagen itself is designed on the human scale to support people not cars (an invaluable hierarchy that, unless you plan to study abroad with your vehicle, I highly recommend you find). However I would advise anyone considering Denmark to look out for the high cost of living -- they're on the Krone, not Euro. Food in Copenhagen is 52% more expensive than my native Minneapolis. I was aware of that fact but not fully prepared. Many of the other cities listed here are expensive as well, but I just got back from a trip to Barcelona and that city is fantastic, especially for budget-conscious students like myself. I looked around the University there and half wished I had known about that option before.

It is a big business for many foreign schools.

I teach in a university in Beijing, and we get tons of exchange students.  Most are sequestered off in a special area where they learn Chinese culture and language, and mostly get drunk and laid a lot.  Some from better schools get to take real classes, like mine, where they find competing with local students to be really tough.  I teach in the business school.  It is fun to see the cocky students from Wharton and Chicago meet local students who are much smarter and better motivated.

It's not as big up close - it's on a hill. Sadly all the new building in that area dwarf St. Paul's and the Tower of London.

Beijing is beautiful. I studied abroad in Hong Kong and I loved it. I visited Beijing and I have never felt so safe and it was such a wonderful city. I hope to go back there and teach in the future.

Europe was the destination for earlier generations.  China is the hot spot today.
