Metallics -- Platinum! Silver! Gold! Sparkles! -- ruled the red carpet last night as entertainment's hottest stars came out for the American Music Awards in Los Angeles last night.
One of our perennial favorite girls to opt for shiny fabrics, Selena Gomez looked sleek in a Giorgio Armani pewter satin gown and Jimmy Choo Vamp shoes. Jennifer Hudson also chose silver, in a shiny Jenny Packham draped dress. Taylor Swift didn't surprise anyone for opting for a gold gown -- this one by Reem Acra -- but her long ponytail and emerald earrings kept the look fresh.
Heidi Klum, who was there to present an award, also looked radiant in a silver Giles sheath with Ncolas Kirkwood python sandals.
Katy Perry, who always likes to have fun on the red carpet, chose a Vivienne Westwood gown accentuated with Chinese characters and pulled her pink hair back with a shiny geometric headpiece, reminding us of those ubiquitous tiny butterfly clips of '90s prom hairdo lore. Electric blue python print heels added a fun pop of color.
During the show, Taylor Swift remained in her gold gown to take home Artist of the Year . Christina Aguilera performed with Maroon 5 in a snug silver bandage dress, and Kelly Clarkson sang her hit "Mr. Know It All" in a red glittery gown.
Nicki Minaj, who took home two awards in the rap/hip-hop category, chose two looks for the show: on the red carpet, an Oscar de la Renta gown with a bustled green skirt and Alexander McQueen's armour wedge heels, and for her performance, a metallic -- literally -- robot bodysuit.
But the award for Most Costume Changes goes to Jennifer Lopez, who won Best Latin Artist and appeared in a dizzying array of costumes, including a black Zuhair Murad Fall/Winter 2011 dress, which she accepted her award in; a 2001-Britney-esque nude sparkly bodysuit, which she wore performing with Pitbull; a long ethereal gown and a white paper-y look for more performances, and a silver fringed dress for her afterparty. If J.Lo was trying to show up ex-hubby Marc Anthony, who also performed, she may have dazzled him just with her new single-girl wardrobe.
