Legacy High School: 2nd Colorado Band To March In Macy's Parade

Broomfield's Legacy High School Lightning Marching Band will be the first Colorado band in over a decade to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, N.Y. The six-time, 5A State Champion Marching Band will be performing "A Colorado Winter Wonderland," arranged by their director, Clay Stansberry.

"We're practicing 3 to 4 times a week. We've worked every single Saturday since August," Stansberry told 7News, adding that the band has a 2.6 mile route with a performance at the end.

The last time a Colorado high school had the honor of marching in the Thanksgiving Day parade was in 1998 with Arapahoe High School, and Broomfield High marched in 1991.

However Legacy High School, which only opened in 2000, has been invited to high-profile events before, having just flown overseas in January 2010 to perform at the London New Year's Day Parade. In N.Y., Legacy will be among nine other high school marching bands in the parade with the Macy's Great American Marching Band.

"It doesn't seem like the nerves have hit yet, but it might when we see 6 million people in one place," Paige Becker, a Junior in the marching band told KDVR.

The 136-member band, approximately 80 parents and 5 staff members will be flying to N.Y. this weekend with money they've been busy raising since they were selected last April. Drum majors in the band told 9News that they are also excited to tour the city and will be seeing Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and the new 9/11 Memorial.

Expected celebrity performances this year besides of course, Santa Claus include Avril Lavigne, Cee Lo Green, Mary J. Blige, Johnny Weir, and more.

The parade will begin at 7 a.m. MT at 77th St and Central Park West, and ends at 34th St and 7th Ave. Watch it on NBC.
