The 11 Most Ideal Employers For Young Professionals In The U.S. (2011): Universum

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/22/11 05:31 PM ET   Updated: 11/22/11 05:31 PM ET

According to a press release from employee branding company Universum, young professionals in the U.S. would rather work at tech companies than investment banks, government agencies or healthcare organizations.

In Universum's study, over half of the ten most popular places to work were tech-related, while every investment bank on the list had become less desirable since the previous year's rankings, reports The Wall Street Journal. Bank of America Merrill Lynch saw the most dramatic decline, dropping 29 spots to number 77.

The data comes from a survey of 6,700 workers under 40 who have been employed for 1-8 years, according to a statement Universum provided The Huffington Post. Participants were asked to choose one to five top workplaces from a list of 200 companies.

How a potential employee perceives a company's brand is apparently an important factor when he is considering whether or not he wants to work there. As a Universum representative told CNET earlier this year, "Companies that have appealing consumer brands generally also succeed in being perceived as attractive employers."

It's not just that people want to work at the places that produce their favorite products and services, they want to work at places where corporate culture is important. The three most popular companies in Universum's study all had corporate cultures that are almost as well-publicized as their products and services. Young professionals who participated in the study were apparently looking for well-rounded work places that offer more than just a typical desk job. At one of the top three companies all meals are provided by the employer. At another, employees get free laundry service, photo processing and leather repair.

The benefits of a strong corporate identity don't stop once you're hired. In a separate study examining employee satisfaction, Universum found that more satisfied employees worked for companies that had a strong image associated with them. "Employers who have a strong and clear employer image have more satisfied employees," research analyst Melissa Burdette said, according to Universum's release of that study. "Therefore it is important for employers to understand and define who they are as an employer and make sure they demonstrate this internally to keep employees satisfied, as well as externally to attract new talent."

Bogus Bank of America Google Plus page attacks their reputation. Hacker pranksters have created a bogus Bank of America profile on the Google Plus service. Is this harmless hijinx, or an indication of future Google Plus abuse?

Google controversially forces users to opt-out of Wi-Fi snooping. If you can figure out how to rename your router SSID to include "_nomap," Google is going to skip your wireless access point in its location-gobbling location services. Once again, a company that should be requesting our opt-in has pushed the onus to the user with an opt-out model.

I'd really like to just sit in a coffee shop and pick that Reseach Analyst's brain about employer branding. It's pretty interesting stuff.

I don't care how attractive my boss is so long as he provides benefits.

Most of those tech companies only hire rock stars. Which means young people aren't going to populate a large segment of their workforce, unless it's as an intern.

What an ugly thing to say. I'd rather be poor than work for those crooks. And as a computer programmer I have very little respect for their intellect.

The folks at Goldman Sachs are really smart people, they have to be to be so successful.. Do not mistake their moral deficit to also imply an intellectual deficit.

My original comment was sarcastic.

Good to see our young folks are sympathic to human rights, child labor laws, monopolies, and consumer protections .... but I guess the pay is good ....

Most "young people" would rather work on Wall Street - that's why all the OWS protesters are hanging around Wall Street, so they can interview during the day and camp out in Zucotti Park during the night!

And yet it's the conservatives that regularly accuse these companies for having a "liberal bias."

few companies i'd work for but i'd have to know someone deep in the company to get in. Or if you want to work for Nike, you would have to attend Oregon

You think anybody in Taiwan still works for a measly dollar a day ?? High hopes!

Nikes are no longer made in Taiwan, they've shipped all that to Bangladesh, Thailand and China where sweatshops are all the rage - like Apple stores!

CIA? FBI? Yuck, fun for fascists maybe. Disney is fun if you are artistic.

Cheers,

Except very few people who work for Disney are full-time employees....that way Disney doesn't have to pay out so much in employee benefits and federal taxes. Supervisors are typically disgruntled and take out their frustrations on their staff. But yeah...fun...I guess. (I've known 6 people who worked for, and several who still work for, Disney)

So Disney is like a lot of other corporations, good to know.

I had interviewed with the CIA (they had the best computers) but after looking at the questions on the app and thinking back about my misguided teenage years I thought why bring up all that stuff again. But I do regret not getting to check out those computer systems.
