Newt Gingrich Says Schools Should Fire Janitors, Use Students Instead (VIDEO)

Gingrich

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/21/11 11:48 AM ET Updated: 11/21/11 11:48 AM ET

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich gave some insight into why he believes child labor laws condemn poor children to remain in poverty in an address at Harvard on Friday.

His solution? Fire all school janitors ... and use the kids instead, Politico reports.

"You say to somebody, you shouldn't go to work before you're what, 14, 16 years of age, fine. You're totally poor," Gingrich said in his address. "You're in a school that is failing with a teacher that is failing ... Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work, they would have cash, they would have pride in the schools, they'd begin the process of rising."

His televised remarks have sparked outrage in some circles, including Mediaite columnist Timothy Christopher.

"There can't possibly be people with whom this resonates, can there," he writes. "... Surely we can all agree that kids aren’t failing in school because they lack the opportunity to clean toilets.

One school district in Dripping Springs, Tex. has more or less seen this idea in practice ... but for them it has been as a last resort in order to avoid teacher layoffs, The Texas Tribune reported.

Since school districts in the state are working hard to absorb the recent $4 billion cut lawmakers approved, teachers at the Dripping Springs Independent School District have a new task: take out the trash and sweep the classroom floors within 15 minutes of afternoon dismissal.

It’s just one more thing at the end of a long day,” long-time high school teacher Ms. Gardner told The Texas Tribune.

The report also illustrated a new concern: if classrooms aren't cleaned within that 15 minute period, the room number is logged, leaving some teachers afraid to give students extra academic help after class.

“If a student comes in the middle of your sweeping, you either have to say, ‘No, I can’t help you,’ or stop and risk that it will not get done in time."

Despite criticisms, Gingrich maintains this early start at a work environment will help children in the future.

"You go out and talk to people, as I do, you go out and talk to people who are really successful in one generation," he said in his address. "They all started their first job between nine and 14 years of age. They all were either selling newspapers, going door to door, they were doing something, they were washing cars."

To be sure, this practice of having students and teachers clean up after themselves isn't new or uncommon in other places. Most Japanese schools, for example, don't employ janitors -- but not for lack of funding. Teachers and students come together to wash their cafeteria dishes and clean their classrooms as part of teachings of morality, ethics, community and a sense of responsibility.

Do you agree with Gringrich's plan?

Is this just Public schools or will this include the private ones as well?

Yeah, Ivy league grads compete for janitor positions because of the huge salaries.

Hey Post people, as a school teacher I am very much in favor of this idea. Gingrich is correct in everything he says, relative to the advantages this brings to children. Now I'm sure that since only 24 percent of the people voted for his idea, you will block my comments again, correct? After all, you block all comments to the right of your political spectrum. Whoever the person is that reads this comment, you ought to be ashamed of yourself for censoring anybody's comments who go against your liberal agenda. And I'm liberal on many issues, but when it comes to censoring comments like you do, then you deal in hypocrisy, because aren't you in favor of the first amendment? Yah, I thought so, because this site exists because of it. Thus, don't censor people you hypocrites.

I think we are forgetting who becomes rich in this world. It isn't the poor kid with a good work ethic, it's the rich kid with the rich parents who get him into private schools and Harvard. Gingrich's opinion is based entirely on the idea that people are poor because they don't have a good work ethic. That is a fallacy.

Liberal agenda. I love it. Is this as same thing as the Gay Agenda. I always get mixed up.

SO after school the poor kid grabs a mop, scrubs out some toilets etc. The rich kid goes home and plays xbox...........What are we trying to teach the children of lower socio economic status?
07:13 PM on 12/08/2011
Here he goes again spouting off from the Newt. Nonsense upon nonsense. Are we sure this isn't Newt Greengrinch putting young children behind a mop or wielding a bowl brush. Did he buy some mops and brushes for his granddaughter so that she can maintain her work ethic?
10:20 PM on 12/03/2011
Of course! let's have poor kids clean schools and give them even less time for homework or tutoring after school. Never mind extra -curricular activities like sports or the arts. These things are only for rich kids! Keep talking Newtie, you'll bury yourself just like the other clowns on stage with you.
04:59 PM on 12/13/2011
unfortunately, what he says is based in ideology and falsified notions of history/the world, so people will believe him and agree with what he says.
01:00 PM on 12/02/2011
I don't agree with his idea (firing staff and paying students), HOWEVER, student can learn a lot from helping around the school.I fully support the idea of getting kids more involved, but it needs to be in their interest first and the financial benefit to the school would just be bonus. The janitors can show students built maintenance and they can get their hands dirty.

I would love to see students tend to gardens, growing their own food that can be served in the cafeteria.

Most of all I think school are underutilized. There 60% of the time they are empty. I want to see more school holding night classes and making better use of the space so they can increase revenue and provide a better education and save jobs without raising taxes on the middle class.

America should fire Congress, I'm sure we can hire children at a much lower rate to ACCOMPLISH ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

Where did Newt say "Fire janitor's" ??

This article is a lie .. the whole point Newt made was to uplift kids .. get them introduced to work, self-respect and a sense of ownership in their schools ...

No wonder there is no Video Link ... this article is a complete lie ..

Then you must be listening to Faux, because the various media SHOW newt saying "First I'd fire all the union janitors.."
You might like him because of his unique name but the man is a liar, and a cheat .
Now if that's who you would like for YOUR president, ok.
Also, yeah, I DID go to public school, AND state university.. My parents did too, and when I became a working adult, I too put in MY tax monies to support the system.
Sorry, we didn't have all the extra money to go to private schools and look down our noses..."ewhh! Public School!!!" Guess you did.
Newt said "poor kids should be put to work".
You don't believe me, hit Google.com . you'll find over 22 million articles, and there are videos!
01:47 AM on 11/25/2011
If any news site is false, it's right here .. not Fox ...

Again, Newt is against Unions not the individual Janitors .. and so am I. You missed his point about uplifting poor kids, instead just attacking Newt. Public School left you without critical thinking skills.

I think Mr. Gingrich has spoke before he thought out the whole picture.

In a small classroom of course teachers and childern have taken the task of cleaning, for a long time.

Windex maybe, papertowel, brooms, dust, pans at the end of week if they have time, you see a school day is planed to the minute. When the bus comes you leave.

What about the whole school, chemical cleaning agents, extra mops and pro brooms, and d-pans, ladders, changing light bulbs. Thats for a large school, to prepare the kids they will need rubber gloves, aprons, that fit, masks, allergies, boy! Kids have allergies,Oh! insurance, who will pay for the insurance? Kid fall of a ladder, have to have that.

WOW ...............I think janitor service is a blessing. Never Mind Newt bad idea.

Question:
What about the children of the fired janitors?
Now we have even MORE children of unemployed people.
Also, I didn't read anything about how much the students would be paid for this work.

Sure you did!
Newt said this work would valuable as a learning tool, and this would give the kids more pride in their schools.
Do I smell a bit of socialism here?
Funny, I didn't see him apply this same concept to students who went to affluent schools. I guess if you're rich you either automatically have school pride, or your janitors are nonpaid volunteers.
02:12 AM on 11/23/2011
No socialism... did you go to Public School??

Taking pride in your school and uplifting kids is the opposite of Socialism .. Liberty is the opposite of repressive Socialism...

A few years ago my Dad took me on a trip through his childhood homes. Way up in the hills, out in the country, farms and small houses that were near inaccessible in the winter. That was down and up a very steep hill in ice and snow. I'm too much of a baby. There's no way I would do that.

Before subjecting schools and kids to this -- where, by the way, many teachers are already responsible for cleaning the rooms they use -- let's try it in Congress. Imagine Newt having to clean up after all those smelly steak-dinner dumps!
