Obama Campaign Blasts Romney's First TV Ad As 'Deceitful'

Posted: 11/21/2011 10:49 pm

WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney's first TV ad of the 2012 presidential campaign sparked immediate denunciations Monday night from President Obama's reelection campaign, which complained that the ad was "a deceitful and dishonest attack."

The 60-second Romney ad quoted Obama as saying, "If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose."

It sounds like Obama is talking about his own chances in 2012. But it's actually a clip of Obama mocking his 2008 opponent, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz), for not wanting to talk about the economy in the final stretch of that election. McCain's response to the collapse of the financial sector in the fall of 2008 is widely cited as a contributing factor to his loss.

The full Obama quote, included in a Romney press release as part of an Oct. 16, 2008 speech at a Londonderry, N.H., campaign stop, was this: "Senator McCain's campaign actually said, and I quote, 'If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose.'"

The fast-moving ad does situate Obama's comment in 2008 by beginning with the statement on screen: "On Oct. 16, 2008, Barack Obama visited New Hampshire."

Obama's reelection campaign spokesman Ben Labolt called the Romney ad "a deceitful and dishonest attack."

"While the President brought us back from the brink of another depression and is fighting everyday to restore economic security for the middle class, Mitt Romney opposes the President's plan to create 2 million jobs and instead proposes a return to the same economic policies that led to the recession," Labolt said in an email to The Huffington Post.

The Obama campaign's howls of protest were joined by the Democratic National Committee, which sent out two press releases condemning the attack within an hour, and by ThinkProgress, a liberal blog run by the Center for American Progress Action Fund.

The Romney campaign dismissed the criticism, saying it clearly addressed the issue of Obama's language in a press release and blog post accompanying the new ad, which is slated to run for a week starting Tuesday.

"Three years ago, candidate Barack Obama mocked his opponent's campaign for saying 'if we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose,'" wrote Romney's communications director Gail Gitcho. "Now, President Obama's campaign is desperate not to talk about the economy. Their strategy is to wage a personal campaign -- or 'kill Romney.' It is a campaign of distraction."

When asked by The Huffington Post, Gitcho maintained the ad was not out of bounds.

"We are using candidate Obama's 2008 campaign tactic against him," Gitcho said in an e-mail.

Obama is headed to New Hampshire Tuesday to promote his jobs bill, which will likely only add fuel to the debate over the ad. That might be exactly what Romney wants. It puts him in a national fight against the president that will elevate him above the rest of the Republican primary field, and it will focus attention on Romney's critique that Obama has not delivered on promises to turn things around.

"He promised he would fix the economy," the ad says. "He failed."

The back and forth Monday night is a preview of what promises to be a bitter and intense fight between Obama and the Republican candidate over the next year.

That wasn't an error that is called spinning.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The ad implies that Obama was saying he can't talk about the economy.

The actual statement was a quote of McC.a.i.n saying he couldn't  talk about the economy or he'd lose (Which, BTW he did) because he talked about the economy.

The one tried and true GOP tactic: Lie. This and divide and instill fear have been certainties for 30 years.

Hasn't anyone noticed that the GOP is good at this kind of stuff ? The GOP feeds on misinformation, they will twist something that is said in order to make it negative. It's so obvious why they do this. If they tell the unbiased truth it works against them, so they have to lie and misinform. The unfortunate thing is some people believe it or they want to believe it because they hate Obama. So some people, the top 2 % I would expect support this kind of thing even if they know it's false but just won't admitt it.

Don't even try using that BS tactic.
Most Dems DO NOT LIE . . .
Many GOP-baggers thrive on lying. This is but one example.
01:28 PM on 11/28/2011
True, it has on occasion been done in the past as many know who have lived long enough. We have forgiven some errors/mistakes in the past or lesson when candidates lost because of them.

The problem with the current GOP is it's their "value system" now. Lie, lie, lie. The NORM!

USA children should NEVER be given a "value system" of "deception" as the key to success.

Romney obviously didn't make the ad or edit it etc. . he just should take responsibility for it as his minions crossed the line in making it. Unfortunately he chose to show himself an unworthy candidate by trying to make excuses for it . . hoping the electorate will identify him as THE republican candidate out jousting with Obama.

HuffPost family always remember this, that people will have done a thing so long until they believe/convinced that the thing that they do even if the thing is wrong, is right to do. They have convinced themselves that their right because they have done it so long, liars even if you catch their hand in the cookie jar & the hand is stuck in the jar when you catch them, will still say that they were'nt stealing. Mr. Romney believes this twisted (Lie) & is convinced that his ad is right, the things that make you go mmmmmm. "Right is still Right even if no one is doing it & "Wrong is still Wrong" even if everybody is doing it.

If President Obama is so hard to beat that the opposition has to make stuff up .... maybe the Republicans should just pack it in and not run a candidate this time.

In every political campaign, there's a bit of "acting stupidly".

In this instance, it was Romney (especially with his attempted justification for the unethical ad.)

President Obama is 100% in the right in this instance. End of story.

This isn't a partisan thing for me (though I am an Obama supporter, 100%) ... if the situation was reversed, I'd back Romney is protesting a similarly unfair, untrue and unethical ad.

Misleading political ads are bad for everyone -- it doesn't matter which side, or which candidate stoops to using them.
01:14 AM on 11/25/2011
And BOTH sides have done so! And BOTH sides will continue to do so. These ads should NOT be the determining factor in ANY election. The ads are only noise. The domestic factors should be:1. Is the economy growing? 2. Are businesses able to grow, profit and HIRE people? 3. Are we taking care of the "truly needy"? 4. Is everyone contributing their "fair share"? This administration fails on almost ALL of those issues. Time for a change!

I guess you need to ask yourself the question: how many AMERICAN jobs did Romney kill or outsource when he made his fortune buying up companies, dissecting them, and selling off the pieces to whoever would buy them ? ?
It wan't just a few thousand, many more AMERICAN jobs were lost than were created. Romney is not a job creator, he is a WEALTH creator. The wealth he created sits in HIS bank account, where it does not help the economy create new jobs one little bit.

MOST know the administration prior to this one and TP Congress opposition is the true reason for your list. Otherwise, it wouldn't be necessary to run deceptive ads or work so passionately to destroy a failed administration.

Who needs to keep an obvious failure of ALL down?

I find it hilarious that a man who made millions by increasing unemployment somehow has any authority about creating jobs.

Ask Mr. Obama how HE likes it! He's been doing this kind of thing his entire campaign and he is STILL doing it as President! He has a lot of nerve getting offended by his own tactics. Maybe he'll stop it now. He is the master of manipulation, twisting words, inciting class warfare by his careless use of words (or purposeful - not sure which)

How is this "his own tactic"?

When did Obama ever do something like this?

(Misquote an opponent, who was actually quoting their opponent, thereby effectively lying by making it look like they said something they didn't say.)

I'm pretty sure he's never done that.
11:36 PM on 11/23/2011
How about that the republicans "put party before country" as if Mr. Obama does not. Or that republicans want "dirty air and dirty water" or "republicans want to push granny over the cliff". Are you serious? Please, don't defend the indefensible. This man is THE most partisan, divisive President we have had in many, many years. And for him to cry foul is an absurd and hypocritical position. He is the PRESIDENT and is supposed to be above this tactic and yet he continues to spew rhetorical and divisive statements against the opposition. Where was he during the negotiations of the most critical issue that faces us today (debt)? He did not engage Congress yet he criticized the result (or lack of a result) and completely blames republicans. Business owners and the wealthy are NOT the problem yet he continues to tell the American people that THEY caused the problem, Get real! This man has no concept of leadership. Keep defending him and we will not have rich and poor. We will only have poor. We have a spending problem, not an income problem.

Around here in Ohio, an anti-Obama ad is running that quotes him using redubbed sound bites, so that over and over he says "Taxes! Taxes! Taxes!" and then "Pass this bill! Pass this bill! Pass this bill" as if the bill adds taxes. Downright deceptive and actually somewhat funny because it's so poorly done. Heck, you can cut up anyone's words to say whatever you wish to stick in their mouth.

What? No follow-up question about that?

Bodes the question: Is it the press's job to get to the truth or merely provide the forum for contention?
