Obama Pardons: President Issues 5 Pardons, 1 Prison Commutation

Obama Pardons

11/21/11 09:17 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Monday pardoned five people convicted of charges ranging from intent to distribute marijuana to running an illegal gambling business.

And he issued his first commutation, ordering the release of a woman next month after serving 10 years on a 22-year sentence for cocaine distribution.

The actions mark Obama's third set of pardons. He pardoned eight people earlier this year, and issued nine pardons in December 2010.

None of those pardoned was well-known, as was the case with the president's previous orders. The cases date back to 1984, when Martin Kaprelian of Park Ridge, Ill., was sentenced to nine years in prison for conspiracy to transport stolen property in interstate commerce, and other related charges.

Obama commuted the 2001 prison sentence of Eugenia Marie Jennings of Alton, Ill. Jennings was convicted in 2001 for distributing cocaine, and sentenced to 22 years in prison. The president ordered her to be released next month, but kept intact her eight years of supervised release.

Others who received pardons:

_ Lesley Claywood Berry Jr. of Loretto, Ky., sentenced in 1988 to three years in prison for conspiracy to manufacture and distribute marijuana.

_ Dennis George Bulin of Wesley Chapel, Fla., sentenced in 1987 to five years of probation and a $20,000 fine for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute in excess of 1,000 pounds of marijuana.

_ Ricky Dale Collett of Annville, Ky., sentenced in 2002 to one year of probation for aiding and abetting in the manufacture of 61 marijuana plants.

_ Thomas Paul Ledford of Jonesborough, Tenn., sentenced in 1995 to one year of probation for conducting and directing an illegal gambling business.

Isn't it cool how Obama knows more than the 12 jurors who heard these cases?

He's sooo cool!

This reply is to G bird: I do not disagree with you. What you say he is good. I do not accept many of political way to get re elected. Obama want to satify his ego, and not the United States Citizens. Who he pardon is on him. Many people whom are in prison on false statement and state lawers should be pardon. Many teenagers should have pardons.

Right in line with everything else he has done....none of it makes any sense, but one thing for sure, you can be assured that it is to benefit him and his thugs somehow.

WOW
He is also sending out the message that do the crime and he will make it okay. This is far worse than any one pres that had a sexual incounter with someone ... No matter how strong the sentence sending out another druggie or drug dealer -buyer is sending the wrong message for all America.

Did you actually read the pardons, because they are not a big deal, those that were pardoned were people that had ridiculous times in jail for what they had done, and there are many states that made it legal,MJ that is and that is the only drug that he pardoned for.
Obviously you all have led a sheltered life ,get a more real attitude about what is happening in our country!

Obama is not sending a good message out to America. It sounds as if he condones the illegal use of drugs n encourages tall that it is okay. SAD

We need to have a Prohibition on alcohol and tobacco, too.............after all, the Taliban and al Queda need the income to destroy America!!! That IS why we keep all these drugs illegal, right? So that our enemies can be assured income to buy enough arms so that we can further our Military Industrial Complex and build more prisons?

Obama has actually locked up more drug users than his peers. And we condone the use of legal drugs that kill more than the illegal ones.

I wish you explained some of the back story for these cases. For instance, why pardon a one year probation sentence from 20 years ago? I know this would make sense if someone needed some kind of license and they couldn't be a former felon, for example, but I would still like to know.

Also, since the Constitution gives the President an 'Unquestionable' authority to pardon, I would have liked to have seen at least one 'Death Row' case that the Justice Dept knows is an unjust one as I know there are MANY of these unfair cases floating around the county.

I have know Thomas Paul Ledford for many years and this is a well deserved blessing for this man and his family. He was an hourly employee and was doing his job not running anything. He is one the smartest, most humble, gentle, man you would ever meet.

Now...... I have something good I can say about the President of the United States.

Hjaz...I can only assume by your english and grammar that you are not from america. Or your just a typical tbag uninformed gop watercarrier. Id like to assume your just a foreigner and might not know that most of that debt us due to the policies created before he was president. Also, any jobs bill he has tried to forward was filibustered in our senate which means it required 60 votes just to get it to the floor for debate. What he has done is crawl us back from an assured depression that even someone from even your country should be thankfull for. He also made the world safer by giving the go to kill bin laden, and was instrumental in removing khadaffi. Not to mention the desimation of alqueda leadership. By the way when he started we were losing several hundred thousand jobs per month. Not only did he stop the bleeding but within 18months of his presidency started to see actual gdp growth which has continued since.
Now you can come and visit america and not sound so ignorant. Your welcome.

Our brother Obama is a nice person and follows his own mind. Let's not misunderstand him. Rather thank God for a president who will do any thing for the United States. God bless America.

Personally, I don't smoke anything...I feel it's bad for the lungs....BUT...there is a gross double standard when the disgusting tobacco industry is allowed to flourish and people who smoke marijuana get the book thrown at them....
