Scott Walker Recall Activists Become Targets Of Threats, Thefts

Scott Walker Recall

First Posted: 11/21/11 10:14 AM ET Updated: 11/21/11 11:52 AM ET

The fight over a potential recall of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) took a dark twist over the past week, as anti-Walker activists reported receiving death threats and having items stolen from their properties.

At least two volunteers working for the campaign to recall Walker in the wake of his passage of a controversial anti-collective bargaining law reported getting anonymous, early-morning phone calls last week.

"They said, 'If you don't stop circulating recall petitions, we will kill you,'" Tom Peer, a volunteer for the recall campaign, told Wisconsin's WISC news of a call he received at 2 a.m. Thursday.

Heather DuBois Bourenane, another recall petition drive volunteer with the group United Wisconsin, told WISC that she received a similar call around 4 a.m. that same morning.

"He said I had attracted the attention of some very bad people, and my life and the lives of my family were in danger," DuBois Bourenane said.

Police have been notified of the incidents and are conducting an investigation, officials told WISC. The caller's number is from the Minneapolis area and doesn't have an activated voicemail system, they said.

A number of other supporters of the Walker recall effort contacted police to report having political signs stolen from their lawns.

It's not the first evidence of actions to counter the recall drive. Last week, a man showed up at a site where signatures were being collected and ripped up a petition that had already been signed. According to WISC, this action is a Class I felony that carries a fine not to exceed $10,000 or imprisonment not to exceed three years and six months, or both.

On Sunday, nearly 30,000 people gathered outside the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison in support of the Walker recall drive. Activists will have to collect a total of 540,208 signed petitions by Jan. 17 in order to force a recall election. They'd apparently gathered more than 105,000 as of the end of last week, Patch reports. According to Patch, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.) predicted Sunday that they'd get the requisite signatures to go forward with the recall campaign.

I'm so sick of seeing this man's arrogant face. Just gather the signatures; pick a quality candidate; fight the good fight against the Koch brother's money; take the vote then send this sick-sucker home.

Returning Wisconsin's state-house to the people, is the highest priority in US politics.

The average american worker makes 26 bucks an hr.....teachers make 46 hr.........Labor Unions are the top campaign contributors....95 % goes to Democrats....so you need strong Unions to protect you from the democrat run school boards???? It's a classic fox gaurding the chicken coop. They are getting so brazen they send out propaganda from the schools via emails, school phone auto dials, and fliers with your kids. If you don't pass the upcoming levi increase this will result in 100 kids per class...........We were better off when the mafia controlled the unions...the dems do the same thing, they just pass laws to make it legal......

Mr. Walker you should just bowe out gracefully, admit that you are being used to destroy the Wisconsin economy for your special interest groups, that you owe money too! How can you look yourself in the mirror, you we born and raised here in Wisconsin, our family used to fish where you were raised, I have never seen any person sell-out Wisconsin like you! You ran a recall yourself, and were successfull, and now it is your turn, so just take it as a time of reflection to understand that you, like everyone one else should've help your fellow Wisconsonites to prosper, and not let us decline in this vast economy!

I'm no rocket scientist and don't pretend to be but it just seems logical to me that Walker has the MOST to gain from killing his opponents i.e. the death threats to leaders of the recall effort and given that he is the Governor, he has the power to put out a contract on people that if those same people did the same in reverse, they'd be arrested even for the threat. Why hasn't the Dept. of Justice stepped in and launched an investigation at a Federal level since this leads straight to the Governor of a State? Could it be that John Boehner has something to do with this? Boehner did tell Paul Ryan that he was going to redistrict him so that he had a chance of getting re-elected by wealthier people. I highly doubt Walker will indict himself so Attorney General Holder, we're waiting on you...do your job!

I certainly hope that this man is caught and gets the 3 years and six months in jail along with the $10,000 fine! To violate American citizens rights under the Constitution of the United States of America is shameful!

You got that right Obama 2012. Is there not anything the Republicans won't do when it comes to dirty politics? I hope he is fined and has to spend sometime in the big house.
01:57 AM on 11/26/2011
Why in the world would he be fined? For throwing the corrupt unions out of our state? Or perhaps balancing our budget? Only a misguided Democrat would see that as criminal.
01:51 AM on 11/26/2011
So glad you believe in the law! Throw the book at the woman that emailed death threats to Gov. Walker and the Republicans in Wisconsin! And don't forget that Lena Taylor owns a home in Milwaukee that had registered felons voting using this as their home address! Make sure we deal with that crime too! Glad we agree!!!
07:09 PM on 11/26/2011
Hmmmmm I missed hearing about death threats againstMrWalker and some other Republicans in Wisconsin. However, I certainly did hear about the death threats against these folks and their families.

I also have not heard anything about this Lena Taylor.

However, I do know that Ann Coulter was guilty of voter fraud in Florida and NOTHING was done to her about this matter.

My guess is that it will end up being one of those cheap phones with prepaid minuets you can buy anywhere. There will be no record of who owns the phone or who made the calls.....

It is awful how the far right will use violence or threats of violence to stop law abiding citizens from exercising their rights under the Constitution of the United States!

Unions wouldn't, no not the Unions, just a thought, Call in a threat to someone, then the Leftwing media picks it up and blames....no.......that would be below them......Not the old create something bad, blame the otherside then bring out the lynch-mob......gets the base fired up ....not a bad idea...just sayin.........Unions were run by the mob...Dems got mad....got rid of the mob and filled there shoes....doing a wonderful job...........Getting more money than the mob dreamed of...good racket......

I pray that these particular people stop making threats of violence.

If the death threats are not false-flag baloney, then find the perpetrators and charge them with the appropriate crime. After all, who do they think they are? Occupy Wall Street protestors?
09:46 PM on 11/22/2011
I NEVER heard of any of the Occupy Wall Street protestors threatening anyone's life or the life of their family! What a cheap attack to try to compare the two!

Molotov cocktails into Macy's, threatening to burn NYC down, arrests for arson in Portland, Occupy protestor in gunfight in Oakland, OWS protestor threatening to stab Fox reporter John Huddy in the neck, that is enough support for the flip comment.

I would lay odds that the mentality of the fat cop that pepper sprayed the peaceful OWS protesters, is of the same mindset as the wingnuts threatening the recall walker people.

Nonsense... This is essentially dishonest propaganda.... with no basis in fact.
No Occupy protestor has threatened anyone except the creeps who have run American business onto the rocks with lack of integrity.

Be careful about threatening them. They are in government and are protected by numerous laws against threats of violence.

A letter to Governor Scott Walker from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and the group’s response to questions, are a glaring demonstration of the group’s influence and desire to remain underground while imposing their influence

"direct participatory democracy"-that's what is missing in this country and something no candidate or political party is offering. What is transpiring in this country is the rule of unrestrained Capitalism replete with all the associated negatives.
Negatives like wealth accumulating at the very top, the lack of meaningful regulations and the
even handed enforcement of them, the glaring influence of Corporations, banks, and their lobbyists.
In view of these any who think government is representative of what is best for "main street" or their party of choice is somehow the exception needs a reality check.

And a sad commentary that majority America hasn't taken to the streets
with them-I would say the OWS movement is an example of direct
participation-I would also think the intent of "town halls" is an another
example.
America seems to be content to allow elected corporate minions to do
their thinking for them, it also seems to be content to allow lobbyists and
this absurdity of campaign finance to continue despite all the discourse
to the contrary- is that what "representative" means?
this isn't a party issue-it is an across the board issue-it might actually
help if people not only realized that but admitted it.

Some circulating petitions have had very hateful comments, and factually inaccurate statements, hurled at them. BUT they are mostly greeted with a Warm Welcome. I've had only positive experiences or polite nos from the people I've approached with the petitions. There are some awful apples in WI, but some WI Republicans - although misguided in thinking Walker supports them and their needs - are just as decent as we Dems. When all the dust settles after the next Pres election I'm hopeful we can go back to being respectful in our disagreements with our neighbors.

Seeing this is the 8th attack on the People and Communities in Wisconsin from public unions - with they being defeated each time - the public unions will not rest until they have their involuntary dues collection back.

As always follow the money.

But, as Dr. lessig tells us - strike at the root of the corruption - money - and you can bring down public unions. We're doin that. Its working.

Yes - and I can't wait until there is a democratic governor in Wisconsin and we can start a recall when he has been in office one year~ Why not keep it going? I prefer a balanced budget so when the dems get in and refuse to balance the budget again, i will start a recall! Let me know when the Democrats start being respectful in Wisconsin becuase I haven't seen it yet! Waiting with bated breath....

respect has to be earned, and i can't think of one virtuous republican that deserves my respect. hell, there are almost no democrats that i can think of either. the people who run our government don't deserve our respect. they got there on dirty money, and screw their constituency to the benefit of their donors.
