You folks are journalists...have you looked up the definition of "penultimate" lately? For shame.
12:20 AM on 11/28/2011
Not sure what your complaint is... penultimate means next to last, and there will be one more round of voting after this one. That makes this the next to last voting and the penultimate.
12:30 AM on 11/28/2011
Check that...you are right and I was wrong. My apologies. It's just that I see "penultimate" misused so often, that I had a moment. The misuse of this word and the use of "close proximity" in the press irks me.

My wife and I will be in Machu Picchu this coming weekend. Hope the trip will be worth it.

Peruvians tell me they drink coca tea before heading up there. Legal.
10:39 AM on 11/28/2011
To them the Coca tea is no big deal and it is foolish not to drink it when in Cuzco. I am a little worried because of drug tests in the States. It would be devastating to fail a drug test because of tea..

I won't participate in this for the simple reason that it is not what you see but what you experience. We've traveled a lot and lived in many different places and still find the purple door to a simple flat in Paris equal to the Eifel Tower.

I do not like to vote natural wonders against man-made wonders.
Come to think of it, I really do not like this whole game.
Every place holds its on own beauty and is different, not better than others.

I also don't see the house where Osama bin Laden was killed. It should be a shrine.

I don't see the poppy fields of Afghanistan on the list.

Another special place is Key West, FL. In addition to the stores/shops/bars in downtown and the wandering wild chickens, the climate is just perfect year round (except for hurricane season).

Grand Teton should be on the list as well. Majestic mountain peaks!

That's a good pick. Beautiful from afar and backpacking there fantastic. Some hard trails going up with a full pack, but once at the high plains it is breathtaking.

The Taj Mahal is almost certainly the most beautiful building in the world.

All I want to see before I die, is one last sunrise, and sunset, and a day spent at the beach....Simple and enjoyable.

Forgive my inquiry - is your name any indication of your state of health? Evenstill thank you for the humbling comment. It brings a real presence to the board.

Cheers

Yes and No. :) I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer last march, but overcame it, My name comes from the group "chemoangels" as I have been a chemoangel for 5 years now. ") I bring sunshine to those going through chemo treatment by way of letters, gifts and cards. It's a truly amazing opportunity and having been through it myself: Everyone needs an Angel. :)

Hi NYC - you asked why I don't need to plan. I was a bit disingenuous there. I did plan my life, and became a tax preparer, only working eleven weeks a year. Now that I am single and my daughter is grown, I have the great luxury of being spontaneous. I often choose general destinations, find places to hang out, and stay as long as I please, rather than develop any itineraries. Hope this satisfies your curiosity.

Wulp the only I have seen is Yellowstone, and in my minds eye the Pyramids would be hard to beat, but Machu Picchu looks incredible. Tie.
10:15 PM on 11/27/2011
My wife was disappointed with the pyramids. She will see Machu Picchu next weekend so I guess she will be a good judge.
03:06 PM on 11/29/2011
Ah so we will have the final word then. I bet Machu Picchu will be other-worldly, I hope she has a wonderful time.

I have always been more fond of natural beauty than man-made wonders. Yellowstone for the win!

The natural setting for Macchu Picchu is breathtaking, but the ruins are nothing special. Try Angkor Wat. Yellowstone National Park is a large region of spectacular beauty, but one of it's only memorable features on its own is probably Old Faithful ( though I am no expert). That leaves the Pyramids, one of the most awesome manmade wonders versus God's amazing handiwork in Australia. Though I generally prefer nature, the Reef is too vast to experience as a whole. Gaza gets the nod. How was the Taj Mahal omitted from this contest? Kandy is a nice town. I enjoyed a pleasant week there last year, but it is nothing compared to The Taj. The loveliest town in the world? Luang Prabang in Laos.

How did I forget about that?! I live in Saigon part of the year so in a few months I'll plan to go there. Vietnam has many world class spots but not on a large scale, except for the world's largest cave. For example, for natural beauty they have a desert in Mui Ne that has an oasis that is in contrast to the sand dunes. Reminds me of the Sahara. For man-made beauty, the old town of Hoi An is a good spot for tourists. Lots of old buildings and the Chinese bridge near the market is interesting to explore.
