AT&T Investigates Attempt By Hackers To Steal Customer Accounts

Att Hackers

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/22/11 10:28 AM ET Updated: 11/22/11 10:32 AM ET

AT&T is investigating an unsuccessful attempt by hackers to access customer accounts, the company said.

The wireless carrier has notified customers of "an organized attempt to obtain information on a number of customers accounts," according to AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel.

Siegel said the hackers tried to obtain customer information using "auto script" technology to determine whether customer telephone numbers were linked to online AT&T accounts.

The automated technology allowed the hackers to send out a stream of random messages to mobile phone users in hopes of identifying an AT&T customer and linking their number to an online account, according to someone with familiar with the situation.

Then, the hackers tried to send a message to customers that appeared to be coming from AT&T in hopes of acquiring information about the customer, a tactic known as "spear phishing," with the ultimate goal of identity theft, the person said.

The incident affected less than 1 percent of AT&T's 100 million wireless customers, Siegel said, adding that no accounts were breached. But AT&T is advising its customers about the incident "out of an abundance of caution," Siegel said. The company is continuing to investigate to determine the source of the attack, he said.

It is not the first time that AT&T's security has been targeted by hackers. Last June, a hackers group calling themselves Goatse Security exploited a hole in AT&T's website that allowed the hacker group to obtain the email addresses of more than 114,000 iPad customers, including ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

In January, two men were charged in the iPad security breach. In June, one of the hackers pleaded guilty.

Siegel said the two hacking incidents are unrelated.

either I am missing it or nuttin' is happening to these hackers-------I am in the show no mercy league for them; this includes the Bay Area Anonymous group who publicized the names of (99 per centers, by the way) garden variety working stiffs, single parents, et al who ride BART and ordinary folk who have to take the train for their jobs-----------

I wonder if this was because of gross negligence on AT&T's part like the last time they were "hacked". I wouldn't trust them with my security.

Who actually uses AT&T again?

Hasn't this happened with AT&T before? Doesn't affect me!! I will never have anything whatsoever to do with these losers. I had a wireless with them for almost two years and it was two years of hell. Dropped calls and I couldn't use it from my home most of the time. I called and called customer service but to no avail. The service techs told me I would need to be close to a major highway. I live two blocks from a major highway. I have US Cellular and I have no problems whatsoever. AT&T can go the way of the dinosaur. They suck.

As soon as we started to put soldiers in Australia we started to receive a whole bunch of cyber-attacks...

Does anybody know who is behind these attacks?
06:41 PM on 11/22/2011
If this was a hacking motivated by financial gain rather than crippling a system I don't see the connection you're trying to make.
If your assumption is that China is staging cyber attacks to protest US troop presence in that area I doubt it would do so by stealing online banking passwords of 1 million ATT smartphone users.

This is not true about there being no breach,.,,last month my Samsung Captivate phone was hacked and At&T would not honer this under their warranty they made me send it back to the manufacturer..then my back account was hacked into with someone buying stuff from Att so how can they say there was no breach. I am glad I came across this story so now I can go higher up I hope. I dealt with At&t for 3 days sitting on the phone for hours only for them to tell me they would not fix my phone.

Here is some good advice: Ditch AT&T

Get rid of AT&T as soon as possible. They're pretty flippant with user security.

I have no love for AT&T. Month after month after month they were calling my landline at least 3 times a day every day. I refused to speak to them and they simply would NOT go away! They NEVER got a response other than 'the machine' and they simply WOULD NOT STOP.

I find it INCREDIBLE that AT&T considers TELEPHONE HARASSMENT to be a viable way to attract customers.

Note that if you hit their website, it is difficult to navigate and contains no way to lodge a complaint or a request for no-call. 'Contact us' leads nowhere thru a jungle of options unrelated to this need, and you pretty much have to have an account to communicate via the website. It's not easy to log in to tell them THEY SUCK via email.

Note that the ONLY WAY to make them stop is to pick up and complain directly to the airhead trying to sell you stuff you OBVIOUSLY DON'T WANT else I would have picked up YEARS AGO. Then the nice airhead will put you on the 'don't call' list. It probably is helpful to mention 'telephone harassment' in this conversation.

Absolutely I will NEVER have anything to do with them ever again FOR LIFE.

So there.

I know exactly what you mean. I have had the same problem with these losers. There was a time when we had no choice but AT&T and they were price gougers when it came to long distance. Now we have choices and I will never, ever do business with them ever again.

AT&T Huh...
Arnt these the same losers that caved when Cheney and Co. wire tapped everyone in the name of Homerland Security?

If everyone would have left them back then we wouldnt have this headline.

And its called phishing, this is old news.
I do feel for the not to bright customers though.

But it couldnt happen to a nicer company.

Capitalism only works when there is competition.

No more mergers in the telecom industry ! !

Monopolies can raise prices and give bad service because you have no choice.

Keep competition alive.
