Local foodies have hit the blogs to question and cringe over Gjelina's recent C rating from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The popular Venice eatery is no stranger to scandal -- except previously it was limited to minor complaints such as parking enforcement and their no-substitution policy. In fact, Gjelina is usually written up in a positive light; the restaurant has appeared on Zagat's Most Popular list, with a 94% rating.

Gjelina has maintained an A rating since 2010, despite prior violations such as unapproved materials, improper cooling methods, and holding of PHF according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Rumors are swirling as to what could cause Gjelina's rating to drop so drastically. One Yelper even speculates vermin -- "heard there were rats," he wrote.

According to Yo Venice!, a C rating is in the 70 to 79 point range. Anything lower than 69 points deems a shut down of the restaurant.

At the time of publication, Gjelina was not available for comment.
