A massive engineering project should soon trim travel times between Zurich and Milan, a trans-Alpine trip that about 10,000 people make daily.
The Gotthard Base Tunnel will soon replace the current tunnel, which is operating at capacity -- and requires more energy expenditures and longer transit times because of its altitude. Check out photos below.
Total build time for the massive project will reach roughly two decades by the time the project opens to train traffic in 2016. Plans call for as many as 300 trains a day to pass through the Gotthard Base.
Travel time should be reduced from four hours to three, a not insignificant time savings.
