Newt Gingrich Leads In New Polls, Bolstered By Experience, Knowledge

Newt Gingrich Polls

First Posted: 11/22/11 04:43 PM ET Updated: 11/22/11 04:59 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Four new national polls show Newt Gingrich edging ahead of Mitt Romney as the first choice among Republicans for their presidential nominee in 2012. Although Gingrich is now the third candidate since the summer to lead in national polling, these surveys suggest that his rise may be rooted in something substantial: a perception that the former speaker of the House is the Republican most knowledgeable and qualified to serve as president.

The four new polls from CNN/ORC International, Quinnipiac University, USA Today and Gallup, and Fox News, all conducted over both landline and mobile phones, have Gingrich leading Romney by margins of between 1 and 4 percentage points (with both candidates winning support in the mid to low 20 percent range). Although none of these margins is large enough to constitute statistical significance on any individual poll, the consistency of the results suggests that Gingrich now holds a slight lead.

As illustrated by the HuffPost Pollster chart (below), which is based on all available national polls, Gingrich's support has grown rapidly, from roughly 4 percent in September to 23 percent in mid-November.

The surveys have also been consistent about the kinds of voters gravitating to Gingrich. His support "skews way old," as Gallup's Frank Newport puts it, and is greater among self-described conservatives and Tea Party supporters. Both the Gallup and Quinnipiac polls show Gingrich with roughly twice as much support among conservative Republicans as among moderate and liberal Republicans. And Gallup shows him winning 34 percent of the vote from Republicans over age 65, but just 4 percent among Republicans between the ages of 18 and 29.

The Quinnipiac poll includes a hypothetical question that reveals Gingrich's support could rise much further if other Republican candidates exited the race. When GOP voters are asked to choose between just Gingrich and Romney, Gingrich leads by 10 points (49 to 39 percent). The ideological divide among Republicans also holds true: Conservatives support Gingrich in a Romney match-up by 21 points (56 to 35 percent), while moderates back Romney by nearly the same margin (53 to 33 percent).

The most striking thing about the new polls, however, is the way Gingrich has come to dominate questions of knowledge and experience. On the CNN/ORC poll, for example, he leads by a wide margin (43 percent to 18 percent for Romney) as the candidate "most likely to understand complex issues." He does very well (leading Romney 36 to 20 percent) as the candidate "most qualified to be Commander-in-Chief."

In a campaign dominated of late by candidates who have trouble remembering their own talking points or President Barack Obama's position on the Libya uprising, Gingrich is perceived as the one not-Romney candidate most ready to be president.

At the same time, these surveys highlight the Gingrich qualities that give Republicans pause. Only 9 percent choose Gingrich as the "most likable" candidate (to 29 percent for Romney). They give Romney a huge (40 to 21 percent) advantage over Gingrich as the candidate most likely to beat Obama, and Romney runs slightly ahead as the candidate most able "to get the economy moving" (25 to 19 percent).

The Quinnipiac poll helps complete the picture. While showing Gingrich with a huge lead over Romney (48 to 22 percent) and the rest of the field on "having the knowledge and experience necessary to be a good president," Quinnipiac's results also illustrate what may ultimately be his Achilles' heel: Only 9 percent say Gingrich is best described as "having a strong moral character."

The Republican primary is far from over, of course. The CNN/ORC survey reports that only 27 percent of Republicans have found a candidate they will definitely support, while 67 percent say they may still change their minds. But with the Iowa caucuses now just six weeks away, Republicans appear to have more clarity about the choice before them: a highly experienced, knowledgeable candidate who carries some significant personal baggage or a less reliably conservative choice with a better shot at beating President Obama.

I think the voters will find their way charismatic, handsome, but ultra-conservative Jon Huntsman. Very quietly, in New Hampshire, the former Utah governor has shot from just under 1% to a little over 11% in just two months. He's now third behind long-entrenched Romney and flavor of the month Gingrich. It shouldn't be all that surprising that he is right in line with the goals of the current G.O.P Congress.

To quote a NY Times op-ed by Ross Douthat: "(Huntsman) on many of the highest-profile issues of the primary season (the individual mandate, Paul Ryan’s House budget, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac), he has arguably been more consistently conservative than Gingrich." And yet, if you look at the comments/ opinion pieces in some places like Mediaite and The Boston Herald, you will find self-described liberals, Democrats and Independents clearly admitting they would vote for Huntsman if he were the nominee.

Congenial, articulate, and classical in person, he's walks and talks like one thinks a president should. He is one of only two people who could beat President Obama. And, according to Nate Silver, if the rate of GDP growth remains at the current level of 2.85%, he is the only Republican that would be favored to beat Obama. I have wondered all along why the party is ignoring Huntsman? Is he too MORAL for their purposes?

Newt might have a change at gaining his party's nomination, but the American prople have seen his political tactics and character, they have witnessed his hyprocritical behavior This is the new repackaged Newt. After taking 1.8 million from Fannie Mae as an "historian", then call himself not a lobbyist for political influence is absurd.
When asked a question I get insensed when Newt appears to look deep in thought then deliver a monotone iltellectual response which might ot might not have anything to do with the subject matter. He should go back to teaching Poltitical Science.

I don't think he is past should be held against him. We should forgive his two failed marriages (could happen to anyone) it doesn't matter that he dumped both while they were in the hospital (one with cancer) we know he is truly a warm caring person. He is intelligent that we know...smart enough to get fannie mae to pay him $30, 000 a month for several years as a lobbyist oops excuse me a historian, all the while they were going broke.

Newt he has publicly admitted to mistakes i.e. extra marital affairs and that makes it okay with the party that professes family values i guess Evangelicals forgive these lapses in judgement as long as it's done behind the tent or a back room a place Newt is familiar with.

If they can live with his baggage good luck to them if this is the best they have to offer Reagan, Jefferson and Madison et al must be rolling over in their graves.

Good post, except Ronald Reagan does not belong in the company of Jefferson and Madison. They were founders of this country and early Presidents. Reagan was an actor, doing the role of President and going downhill from Alzheimer's at the same time. I don't think he is going to be spinning in the tomb all that much.

the "experience" that gingrich has is nothing we need to gain. As George Will commented,,,,,"Newt gingrich is a stupid person's idea of what a smart man looks like"

Republican men really like Gingrich because of the way he treats his women and discards them when no longer useful. They like his leadership to put them in their place under the bus. Republican women need to wake up, get a voice and put some shoes on.

Republican women seem to be non-persons like M. Bachman and C. Rice--"I will have to ask my husband (or in Rice's case, my beloved Georgie) what is best to do...."

Why shouldn't he be . he was the Speaker during an era when one of the most beloved and successful moderate Presidents was in leadership, Clinton. He was a student of Reagan who was also beloved enough to get re elected with a 49 State romp. Both Presidents were leaders of people.

Democrats foolishly voted for inexperience over experience at a time when experience was needed. They won;t do it again. Obama is still inexperienced and a woeful leader and single fingers from foreign press lol.

No one cared about Obama's past with Ayers and Wright. I don't think people care about morality in their leaders anymore. You can thank the "progressive" left for that., Progress sometimes bites

Obama's "past" with Ayers amounted to a casual meeting at a fundraiser years ago. I guess you must be disgusted with the hateful holier than thou preachers each of the Republicans seemed to have assoiciated with too, right?

And there are quite a few "facts" to be examined, and probably some that we don't even know about yet...

May I pose a question here? What the fudge is with all of you Republicans? One week its Michele, then next, Herman, the next Newt and the guy you should run and stands the best chance with moderate republicans if there are any anymore is Mitt.

Newt Gingrich, really? He is a smarter but more idiotic John McCain. He is crabby and loves to hear himself talk. He is a wordsmith and BS's his way through things. I would not trust him with a ten foot pole.

No pun intended.

You have no clue. Obama's suffering base will stay home. The far right will be renergized and Independents who decide these things and cross the isle will not make the same mistake twice and vote for the experience of a someone who proved he can work with a successful opposition party President.

Every poll for every aspect of this GOP race has different "Front Runners'', everything on media sites and the news is fabricated and leaning towards a specific candidate or stance. I think this whole thing is a mockery, no need to state who I believe should be president, but the are the only consistent, and true candidate in the race!
