Occupy Wall Street: Journalists Protest NYPD's Handling Of Media During Zuccotti Eviction

Zucotti Park Eviction

By DEEPTI HAJELA   11/21/11 08:53 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- Media organizations sent letters on Monday to city officials complaining about the police handling of journalists covering the Occupy Wall Street protests and called for meetings to address their concerns.

They said New York police blocked journalists from seeing when authorities cleared out the Occupy camp in lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park last week and said police officers used force and arrested some journalists as they were trying to do their jobs.

"The police actions of last week have been more hostile to the press than any other event in recent memory," a coalition of media organizations and journalist groups said in a letter to chief New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne.

The New York Civil Liberties Union sent another letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg and police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, covering similar ground.

"The numerous reports we have received and have learned of make clear to us that the NYPD is aggressively blocking journalists from doing their constitutionally protected work and in some instances is even targeting journalists for mistreatment," that letter said.

When police cleared out the Occupy camp in Zuccotti Park last week in an overnight raid, journalists were kept at a distance, and several were arrested along with the protesters there and at other sites later in the day.

Bloomberg, an independent, has defended the NYPD's policy of keeping the media back, saying it was intended to keep them out of harm's way.

"The police department routinely keeps members of the press off to the side when they're in the middle of a police action," he said last week. "It's to prevent the situation from getting worse, and it's to protect the members of the press."

The media groups, in their letter, cited numerous examples, including an officer grabbing a photographer and dragging him from the park and another pushing a reporter, who fell on the ground. They called for a meeting "so that we may have full and frank discussions in order to resolve these issues and prevent further deterioration of the police-press relationship which is so critical to an informed public."

The signatories on the letter included representatives of The Associated Press; The New York Times; the New York Post; the Daily News; Dow Jones; Thomson Reuters; NBC Universal and WNBC-TV; WABC-TV; WCBS-TV; the National Press Photographers Association; the New York Press Photographers Association; the New York Press Club; and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

In an email, Browne, the police spokesman, said, "We've worked together in the past to iron out misunderstandings, and I'm happy to do so again."

The mayor's office referred comment to the NYPD.

A number of journalist groups announced Monday that a coalition to monitor police-media relations had been created.

"In what appeared to be a planned maneuver, police officers forced reporters and photographers so far away from Zuccotti Park that they could not see what was happening," the group said. "They roughed up people who were trying to fulfill their duty to report the news."

It said what the police did on Nov. 15 "to suppress coverage of their activities was intolerable" and it was "determined to use any means needed to fight such censorship in the future."

Members of the coalition include the Deadline Club, the New York City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists; the Deadline Club Foundation; the Newspaper Guild of New York; the News Media Guild; the New York Press Club; the New York Press Club Foundation; the Newswomen's Club of New York; the New York Press Photographers Association; the National Press Photographers Association; and the Society of Silurians.

January 20, 2012 – Move to Amend Occupies the Courts!

Move To Amend is planning bold action to mark this date — Occupy the Courts — a one day occupation on Friday January 20, 2012, of the Federal Courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States and as many of the 89 U.S. District Court Buildings as we can. (I am inspired by Doctor Martin Luther King who said; "a true revolution of values", ... "there comes a time when silence is betrayal"., "people are not gonna be silenced".). Move to Amend will lead the charge on the judiciary which created — and continues to expand — corporate personhood rights.

These big name media folks need to hire a good lawyer and sue NYC
with a class action lawsuit.
That's the only way to get accountability under our system.

And the Public is screaming about how the Media has refused to report on Occupy's around the Nation.

The not admitting to what has ben going on is not going to stop it and it is growing.

Only when the press is arrested do they start crying about the Police.
What about WE THE PEOPLE that are being beaten and arrested.

People need to tune into Keith Olbermann on Current TV. He has been covering the protests since day one and has dedicated 1/2 or more of his show to the Occupy Movement since it's inception. I haven't seen any other mainstream anchor dedicate more than a few minutes if anything at all to the movement on a daily basis. If the mainstream won't cover it tune in to those who are, unfortunately Keith is the only one doing it right now. Even so called "liberal" MSNBC anchors aren't doing more than one segment a night on it generally.

The media ABSOLUTELY HAS been covering the OWS, I have read so many coverage stories about the OWS protests all over this country for months now, I have seen it on quite a few news stations other than the more well known news shows. SO Don't say the OWS isn't getting any press because it is getting a whole bunch of it.

Actually, the media has been covering the movement. Go to Google Trends and run this trend... "republican, democrat, occupy" and you will see that there has been a huge amount of coverage. Now this doesn't address the quality of the coverage, but it does cover your basic concern.

As the swat teams moved in and crushed the bookworms with riot sticks and pepper spray, the reaction by Bloomberg was an acknowledgement to his crony banking buddies that he is ready once again to join their company. Without cracking heads Bloomberg wouldn't be accepted at the country club. People to him are nothing but cogs in his machine. When the cogs don't mesh, they get crushed. I consider Bloomberg nothing more than a Nazi masquerading as a jewish mayor.

Don't forget Bloomberg will be out of office soon and has to be able to look his fellow 1%ers in the eye. I love how he is deflecting all this attention to the NYPD rather than act like the leader he is supposed to be and take any responsibility himself for ordering the ploice in in the first place.

Then why lock down the airspace so news helicopters were not even allowed to fly over and film from the air? I'm sorry but this excuse is bogus. This was a media blackout, just like in Syria. Reporters were beaten, bloodied and arrested. Our democracy depends on a free and fair media. We can embed journalists and send them into a war zone but we can't dare let them film an "under cover of darkness" raid on a bunch of peaceful people committed to non-violence. What b.s.!

What can you expect from Bloomberg? He wasn't elected. He bought his job with the money he made from the same people who the protesters are protesting.

Also worth noting is that his net worth has nearly quadrupled while he has been mayor and since the crash of '08 but I'm sure he hasn't used any insider information to make that money. He is a symbol for everything that is wrong in this country.

Keep them out of harm's way. The 'harm' being police action. It's a cute little package.
Use the police in a way harmful to the public and 'protect' themselves from observation by 'protecting' the media from being hurt by the police themselves.
There would have been no harm if there hadn't been un-needed police action and brutality.
Their excuses reek as badly as their actions.
I know it sounds like an over-reaction, but this IS the work of a Police State.
Beware, folks and pay attention.

I only see this getting worse as the protests continue. I'd like to see the protesters reach out to the police since they are a part of the 99% getting screwed. The police need to realize they are being used like puppets by the powerful moneyed interests of Wall St. They are supposed to "Serve and Protect" not "Suppress and Destroy".

wonder why the police have been hostile to the journalists, as they cant get a real break on the truth,as the medias onsided cop hating reporting is a travesty in itself, when does the media have the right to be were a civilian is not or told not to be,the answer is never unless invited and there was a time that was feasable, but that has all changed as there are far and few good reporters of the news left, they cant report it the way it is because all the news agencys are owned by liberal left wing ceo"s who want what they want reported, thought we learned a lesson when that fake walter cronkite miss reported on the 1968 tet offensive in viet-nam and especially the re-taking of HUE city and the embedded media who exaggerated and miss reported again on our troops in iraq and afghanistan, get proffesional and maybe you may be invited to a real party.

The NYPost and Daily News both applauded the NYPD's actions until their own journalists were beaten up. Now they are complaining. Billionaire-owned media hypocrites
