'Pete & Pete' Reunion: Cast, Creative Crew Reunite In Los Angeles

Pete And Pete

First Posted: 11/22/11 07:54 AM ET Updated: 11/22/11 05:15 PM ET

There's a reason why a certain generation looks back on "The Adventures of Pete & Pete" with a vast fondness and nostalgia that reaches almost mythic proportions: the show was all about looking back on childhood with a vast fondness and nostalgia in mythic proportions.

For the first time since the show ended in 1996, the cast and creative crew behind the early Nickelodeon cult hit reunited for a panel to look back on their now iconic work. Both Petes -- older TV brother Mike Maronna and the younger, stranger TV brother Danny Tamberelli -- were in attendance on Saturday at LA's Cinefamily, as were creators Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi and a host of other cast members.

As McRobb told the audience, the show's unique perspective is what made it such a unique success. In seeking to make each episode "funny, sad, strange or beautiful," the show connected in a way that most TV shows were not doing at the time.

"I think originally the show began as sixty second commercials for Nickelodeon, and the idea at the time was just to capture what it was to be a kid from a certain perspective," the co-creator said. "If you've seen the sixty, you know this is storytelling, the way kids tell stories, just completely stream of consciousness, works within its own logic and it goes by really fast and you don't even remember half of it because there are just so many details."

In particular, the show hit with the Generation X crowd that was growing up at the time, as well as those a bit older, as it played to their nostalgia.

"It eventually gets slower and eventually gets more mature with time," McRobb continued, "but I think from the very first sixty we did to the very last episode, it was just imbued with this idea that, what's a kid's perspective on growing up, and all the little things that as you get to be adult, they start to fade into the background, they're a big deal to kids. So we just wanted to take those every day events and make them as big as possible."

Perhaps the most mythical element of all was the character of Artie, who was played by Toby Huss. He was discovered during a performance art piece that began at the University of Iowa and then continued on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. McRobb spotted him in NYC, recruited him right out of a bar, and the rest was history.

The one thing Huss didn't take to his "Pete & Pete" version of the character? The sexual innuendo and profanity-laced dialogue.

I LOVED this show when it was on, and I love it still. I used to watch it with my daughter, who is now 26. Juts hearing the title song brings back wonderful memories, and I bought the CD as well. Now I have grandkids and will be sharing it with them when they old enough. I am glad to hear there's activity related to this show, but my question remains WHEN IS SEASON 3 GOING TO BE RELEASED??? Why release 2 of the 3 seasons, but not the third? Makes NO sense to me.

What a great show! I was in my mid-twenties when it aired and enjoyed it very much. So quirky, funny and poignant. Iggy Pop, Luscious Jackson, and many other terrific cameos. What's not to love? One of my favorite episodes was the one when younger Pete was trying so hard to find that song he had once heard: "I was around (nobody knows...)".

They did have a lot of cameos. I was in junior high school, and I loved the episode when the were looking for Mr. Swirlie, and when little Pete and Artie the Stongest Man in the World refused to go to sleep!

i remember riboflavin having a key element in my favorite episode, but i was very young when i watched it. it was preparing little pete for time travel or something. hope someone out there knows what i'm talking about. btw awesome show, though if i hung out with a strange, leotard-wearing, adult in the woods i'm pretty sure my parents would have called the police.

To bad they never released the third season on dvd considering the cult following the show had and the fact they reasoned seasons 1 and 2.

I know. They need to release it.

I was so excited to see the picture for this article it immediately took me back. Every now and then I watch an episode of pete and pete and it really reminds me of being 4 or 5 years old and watching it with my older brother. Old shows like this specifically Nickelodeon shows, evoke in me feelings of comfort that I had as a kid as nuts as that sounds. I'm now 22 years old and this reunion really makes me reflect on how surreal it is to grow up and how everything that you loved as a kid slowly becomes outdated. People laugh when their parents talk about the most loved things of "their day" but its crazy that my generation is slowly moving into that same space...that "oh WOW do you remeber..." its crazy. o.O bless them for making that show it was wonderful and I know alot of 90's kids who treasured it.

I'm a Gen X'er and I've never heard of that show...but then that is probably because I was stationed in Italy and Iceland from 1993-1997.

The BBQ episode and the Alien one had to be in the top 5. Also didn't Little Pete have an underground base if I remember correctly?
