Rick Santorum: Africa 'Was A Country On The Brink' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 11/22/2011 8:53 pm Updated: 01/22/2012 4:12 am

Zeroing out foreign aid, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum said at Tuesday's debate, "is absolutely the wrong course." He cited development money that went to fight the AIDS pandemic in Africa: "It was a country on the brink," he said, adding that it was a ripe region for radical Islamists.

Africa, of course, is a continent, not a country. And we've heard this mistake before.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Santorum's primary rival, also made a geographical mix-up about Africa at an earlier debate, saying "Now with the president, he put us in Libya. He is now putting us in Africa. We already were stretched too thin, and he put our special operations forces in Africa."

Libya is, of course, part of the continent of Africa.

More on Santorum's comments, from HuffPost's Andrea Stone:

Santorum [noted] that the continent was a "fertile ground" where radical Islamists could "get a foothold" -- even though they already have one in the Horn of Africa. He rejected those who "talk of zeroing out foreign aid" and said that such aid "promotes our values that America is that shining city on the hill."

I learned something today. I've been referring to it as a country for 43 years. I never stopped to think. But then again, I'm still a proponent that the world is flat. What do I know?

This happens with Africa because the continent isn't valued as having contributing to history beyond slavery. So many different cultures, religions, customs, etc in Africa and we really don't know much.

I watched this debate and came to the conclusion that they are all a bunch of clowns except for Ron Paul. He is the only honest one with any integrity, and the only one who tells the truth. The rest of them want to increase defense spending while cutting taxes, and then claim they will balance the budget. Hellooooo?? 15 trillion debt and counting. Soon you will hit a wall and nobody is going to lend you money any more, then the dollar will become the peso, and you will have no choice but to do exactly what Ron Paul says you must do - close the hundreds of overseas bases, stop getting into a new war every couple of years, and quit pretending you are still a superpower. The credit card has reached its limit.

Why even bother listing articles from anything this man says? He is a nobody that has no reason running for president when there are plenty of others more capable.

And this is the party that wants to end the Department of Education. Seems like they won't be happy until Americans are dumber than they are. Please go back to school Rick, you're embarrassing yourself.

The saddest part of this is, he's actually RIGHT on this. Zeroing out foreign aid is a terrible idea, for the reasons he cited and for others as well. It's too bad he had to mess up so publicly on one of the few issues where he's on the side of the angels.

On the brink of turning into a continent.

Continence. Something that's been missing from GOP presidential candidates for at least 12 years.
