Soledad O'Brien Stays In The Zone For Horseback Riding: Love Of The Game

Soledad O'Brien: 'You Cannot Be A Great Rider With A Bad Horse'

In our weekly "Love Of The Game" series, Huffington Post BlackVoices talks sports with a person of note.

This week, CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O'Brien considers her love for horseback riding, as well as what it takes to excel at the sport.

"I use to go to Belmont with my dad all the time when I was a kid. I've been horseback riding for years, since I was a child. And then last year -- literally a year ago -- I fell off my horse and tore my ACL and my meniscus, and had reconstructive surgery on my knee. So I just started riding again a couple of months ago. But I love watching Grand Prix jumpers. It's so athletic, and the horse and the rider have to work together as a team cooperatively to be wildly successful. You cannot be a great rider with a bad horse, and you can't be a great horse with a so-so rider. The two of them have to bring it. So I just really love watching people who are amazing ... For me I think it's a great way to go and clear your mind. Because when you're horseback riding you really can't think about anything else, you have to really focus. So I have enjoyed it because I'm a tightly wound person."
