Michele Bachmann Receives Apology From NBC Over Roots Song

BRIAN BAKST   11/23/11 09:44 PM ET  AP

ST. PAUL, Minn. — GOP Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann received an apology from an NBC executive after an off-color song was played during her appearance on Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night," her spokeswoman said late Wednesday.

The Minnesota congresswoman received a personal letter from NBC's vice president for late night programming, Doug Vaughan, a day after she appeared on the show. As Bachmann walked onstage, the show's band had played a snippet of a 1985 Fishbone song entitled "Lyin' Ass B----."

Vaughan wrote that the incident was "not only unfortunate but also unacceptable," Bachmann spokeswoman Alice Stewart told The Associated Press. She said Vaughn offered his sincerest apologies and said the band had been "severely reprimanded."

Fallon also apologized to Bachmann when they spoke earlier Wednesday, she said. He'd tweeted earlier, saying he was "so sorry about the intro mess."

"He was extremely nice and friendly and offered his apology, and she accepted it," Stewart said, adding that the comedian said he was unaware the band planned to play the song. "It's just unfortunate that someone had to do something so disrespectful."

Bachmann lashed out earlier Wednesday at NBC for not apologizing or taking immediate disciplinary action. In her first comments on the flap, Bachmann said on the Fox News Channel that the Fallon show band displayed sexism and bias by playing the song.

"This is clearly a form of bias on the part of the Hollywood entertainment elite," Bachmann said. She added, "This wouldn't be tolerated if this was Michelle Obama. It shouldn't be tolerated if it's a conservative woman either."

She went further on a national radio conservative radio show hosted by Michael Medved, calling the incident "inappropriate, outrageous and disrespectful."

On Fox, Bachmann expressed surprise that she's heard nothing from the TV network. She suggested that discipline for the show's band, The Roots, was in order. She said she believed Fallon's comments to be sincere.

One of Bachmann's congressional colleagues, New York Democrat Nita Lowey, had called on NBC to apologize for its "insulting and inappropriate" treatment of its guest.

An NBC spokeswoman didn't return a phone message from The Associated Press.

The Roots' bandleader, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, has said the song was a "tongue-in-cheek and spur-of-the-moment decision."

Bachmann, who is lagging in presidential polls, has spent the week promoting her new autobiography in national television interviews.

WRONG! It's not at all funny! I'm a Dem & think Bachman is crazy (at best). HOWEVER, what Fallon, his 'handlers', the Execs, the Producers, Questlove, etc.....did was FLAGRANTLY UNPROFESSIONAL & should NOT be tolerated. Whoever PLANNED or knew about this should be fired. It was GROSSLY INAPROPRIATE. On many levels.
-If you're a woman, can you condone Sexism?
-If you're a person of color, would you condone racism?
-If you're a Human Being, should you condone disrespectful & degrading treatment of an invited guest?

Don't get your bra up in a bunch. Whether it was funny or not is beside the point. The point I'm making is that she can't be crying wolf everytime someone comments/critizes/makes her the butt of jokes. She chose to go into politics, she has to expect this, especially since she's planning to run for higher office. By the way, I'm a human woman of color and I didn't find it racist, sexist or otherwise. I'm just not into Jimmy Fallon's humor.

So, she's angry about The Roots doing something they ALWAYS do on a late night show, but Michelle Obama can get booed at a national event, for no reason, and that's OK. I'm not seeing how this works...

"For no reason...." Oh, you don't think those 1 toothed, red necks don't hear her views or read Mr. Ayers, oops, Mr. Obama's fab book? Or his little condescending remarks to the smarty pants about the "bitter clingers"?

How dare they respond this way to Mrs. Married to the Smartest Guy in the World! Oh, the humanity!

Get used to it. Lots are on to the grifter's game as of late.

Well let's put it this way: I voted for Pres. Obama NOT because of Michelle Obama.
Michelle Bachman was VOTED by her constituents and a SITTING member of Congress of the United States of America.
If that didn't work, let's try: the CROWD (plural) booed. THE LEADER (singular) of the band initiated the intro music (this case we won't know for sure if ALL band members agreed or maybe some of them just went along).
If that didn't work, hey, you could always check with Mr. Fallon when Ms. Bachmann is coming back to his show so you could bring your own crowd and get to boo her.
I believe that would be fair, if that's what you're after.

Of course Fallon will be disciplined and the talentless who-ever-heard-of-that-hack band leader will be fired. Oh wait, it's a *Republican* woman who they sexually dissed, not some liberal chump woman. Nevermind. Nothing to see here. NBC doesn't want Republicans watching their ever-sinking ship of mediocrity, but just in case:

I can't believe people are even attempting to say it was ok simply because they don't agree with her poltics. Shameless and childish.....and people wonder what's wrong with kids today? I find the situation amusing, but can completely understand why Bachmann was offended. I probably would be too. The thing is, people comparing this to doing the same thing to Michelle Obama is completely different. Bachmann is NOT the First Lady of this country and is not on the same level as Mrs. Obama, politically. Making this false equivalency between the two is ridiculous. Bachmann is a third-tier Republican hopeful, not a current head of state, as Mrs. Obama is. What happened to Bachmann isn't cool, but I think we need to be realistic when drawing a line of similarity between the two.

Bachmann is a congresswoman from Minnesota, vastly more important and relevant than someone who plants gardens and picks out silverware for white house functions. I'm shocked at the failure of public schools in our country. This wasn't amusing, there were many amusing songs that could have been chosen to introduce her that everyone could have laughed at in what was supposed to be a comedians show. This was political commentary and inapproriate for a TV show and someone (all involved in song selection decision) needs to get fired.

I already acknowledged that it wasn't an okay thing to do. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree that a member of the House of Representatives that is consistently expounding vitriol and false claims is somehow on the same level as the First Lady of the U.S.

None were as fitting.

"This was political commentary and inapproriate for a TV show and someone (all involved in song selection decision) needs to get fired. "

Not gonna happen. Fallon has already taken alot of crap from his audience which the majority find appalling that the apology was given. He would lose more audience with our type than with yours. Look for the incident to be harped on.

Just to be very clear Mrs. Obama is NOT a current head of state or in fact an elected official at all.

Mrs. Obama was at an event for political reasons, and people booed - that booing was a political response to her husbands policies.

I apologize for calling her a head of state. In my head I knew that wasn't the right term for it, so I used it as a general term to represent what I meant, i.e., in a position that is not synonymous to that of Rep. Bachmann's.

Michele Bachmann should pack up and go home to her husband who is starving. She has lost her luster in politics after her statement that Blacks are better off being slaves. How about if I said she is better of being in the kitchen than running around in politics. Would she like that?

I would like to ask one simple question; according to most statistics the Black population of the US is aprx. 35% and the White population is aprx. 65% with a total population of aprx. 300 +_ million. Even though the statistics show more Whites receive government assistance than Blacks that assumption is inaccurate due to the population percentage difference. When you figure in the per capita figures Blacks are at 44% of their total population on government assistance. Now I am not saying anything against Blacks for their plight. Getting to the point, if there are that many on government assistance is there really any difference in being a slave in the 1850's ( you were given everything as far as basics by the master) and being on assistance where the government gives you the basics? Believe me that slavery still exists but is run by the government (except you don't have to work for it). Do you think you are better off now than then? You are being duped into believing that Dems. are helping you out. Every time they give you another handout for a vote for them what is your return? Instead of sitting waiting for the next handout try going after something you can do that will improve your life. I think MB might be close in her assumption but I don't think statistics were very well kept in the 1850's.The only advantage you have now you can think for yourself and earn a better life.

Very few (Joe Wilson) have disrepected President Obama. Disagreeing with his policies is not the same. Disagreeing with his path for America is not the same. Disagreeing with his vision of a more socialistic country is not the same as disrespecting him as a person or the office of the president.

Learn what socialism is then come back. I am sick and tired of hearing a moderate-liberal president being called a socialist, when he wasn't even liberal enough to push for a PUBLIC OPTION for health care. There is absolutely nothing socialistic about him, as he has not called for equality of outcome (socialist), public ownership of capital (socialist), or even equality of opportunity (strongly liberal).

So try again.

So what's the deal? Bachman lies, more than the average person. Can't stand the heat, stay off tv shows. She really should known better, but then she thinks she married a str8 man, can pray the GAY away, hates government, yet gets all the $$$$$ she can steal for her litter of kids, refuses to change the climate of bullies (her district in Minn. has the highest teen suicide rate in the country), AND the list goes on & on. Calling a liar a liar isn't wrong. It's about time people did not hold back slaminng her. Stop crying & pack it in.

Yes, some things are wrong. Let's start with Bachman's desire to see more teens die because the schools in her distrtict aren't allowed to even mention the word "Gay." When she was on the local school board, she led the anti-gay movement & was very vocal about it. Now she goes on tv, all over the country inciting anti-gay rhetoric, because god speaks to her. Sometimes you simply have to point out the truth. Thank you Fallon & the band for doing so.
