Chicago Cop Shoots, Kills Man During South Side Struggle

A Chicago police officer fatally shot a 27-year-old man who had punched her and attempted to grab her gun during a South Side struggle Thursday morning.

The incident began with the officer and her partner's attempt at stopping a car containing four men around 2 a.m. in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. When the driver took off, the police chased after them until the car crashed into a garage in the 7400 block of South Emerald Avenue, NBC Chicago reports.

CBS Chicago reports the four men were traveling in a vehicle that was suspected to have been stolen. After the crash, the men in the car jumped out and ran away from the scene. When an officer followed one of the men into a gangway, he reportedly punched her in the face and tried to snatch her gun away from her before she shot him during a struggle.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and was later identified as Devon Ross. Ross had been acquitted the previous month of two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The officer involved in the shooting was taken in good condition to Holy Cross Hospital and is expected to recover from the minor injuries she sustained, ABC Chicago reports. The Independent Police Review Authority is currently investigating the incident.
