Egypt Protests: Court Orders Release Of 3 U.S. Students, Say Egyptian Officials

Egypt Protests

PHILADELPHIA — A court in Egypt has ordered the release of three American students arrested during a protest in Cairo, a lawyer in Philadelphia confirmed Thursday.

Derrik Sweeney, Luke Gates and Gregory Porter, who attend the American University in Cairo, were arrested on the roof of a university building near Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square on Sunday. Officials accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters.

Attorney Theodore Simon, who represents Porter, a 19-year-old student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said his client remained in custody at a police station as of Thursday afternoon Eastern time.

But Simon said he was able to speak by phone with Porter, describing the student's demeanor as "calm and measured, demonstrating a maturity well beyond his 19 years."

"He was extremely thankful and appreciative for our efforts and the unconditional support of his mother and father," Simon said.

Porter is from Glenside, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia.

Sweeney's mother, Joy Sweeney, said she is "absolutely elated" at the news of her 19-year-old son's release.

"I can't wait to give him a huge hug and tell him how much I love him," she said, adding that the news of the court order was the best Thanksgiving gift.

The 21-year-old Gates is a student of Indiana University.

The State Department released a statement saying it was trying to independently confirm the reports of the students' release.

Earlier Thursday, Egypt officials said the Abdeen Court in Cairo had ordered their release. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media. They did not say when the students would be released.

In Bloomington, Ind., a spokesman for Indiana University, said he could not confirm that Gates and the other has already been freed. Mark Land earlier said he had spoken to Gates' parents and that they had been told by the State Department that their son has been released.

Joy Sweeney said she wasn't sure when her son, a student at Georgetown University, would be returning to their home in Jefferson City, Mo.

"If he can find his passport (then he'll leave) tomorrow, if not, it won't be until Monday," she said.

She said the U.S. consul general in Egypt, Roberto Powers, recommended that her son leave Egypt as soon as possible.

"He also conveyed that that was what Derrik had conveyed to him that he wanted to do. He was enjoying his experience but (was) ready to be done with it," Sweeney said.

Derrik Sweeney interned for U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-Mo., earlier this year. Luetkemeyer's spokesman Paul Sloca, said the congressman is "extremely pleased that he's safe and coming home, especially on Thanksgiving."

Sweeney said she had not prepared for a Thanksgiving celebration, although a friend had taken her some food. She said the idea of a Thanksgiving feast had seemed "absolutely irrelevant" before the news of her son's pending freedom.

Asked what she thought her son would take away from his arrest, Sweeney said she thought he would make something useful of it.

"I'm sure that he'll put a life-lesson learning experience into a positive story," Sweeney said. "He's a writer, he will write about this experience."

Those kids look pretty nervous in those photos, like they've hit the brick wall of reality.

They were fortunate they had someone to pull them up and over that wall, their Egyptian friends and comrades have to fight to tear down that wall.

If these kids were on the roof of a University building thriwing rocks or fire bombs or whatever with other demonstrators, and if others were there it is very likely, then, if convicted, they should be punished according to Egyptian law. If no one can prove they did anything then they should be released. Evidently, there are no witnesses to the action so there is no way to convict them.

And then we wonder why some people in other nations have a bad view of Americans. First the morons who were hiking in Iraq and "accidentally" crossed the border into Iran-- and now these young adults. I almost called them "kids" but they aren't kids and they full well should have known better. It's bad enought that they are even in Cairo now. Shouldn't there be some sort of advisory against travel-- for whatever reason-- to any nation that has receently undergone such a political upheaval and still doesnt even have a functioning government?
But surely if you are there, you should know better than to get involved in any way in their politics.

I don't wonder why "some people in other nations have a bad view of Americans," and it's got nothing to do with these kids. It's got everything to do with our relentless assaults on other nations, from Latin America to Africa to Asia, our arrogance and our ignorance.

Why are people in this thread acting like these kids definitively engaged in fire bombing? Are we reading different articles? Did they admit to it? Were they found guilty of it? Were they captured on video throwing fire bombs? Aren't they denying it?

The way I see it is, had they thrown firebombs at Egyptian Poilce, there is NO WAY IN HELL they would be ordered released.

So, why are some here convicting them, when the Egyptian authorities have ordered them to be released?

Don't get me wrong, I'm with you all in that, I believe they are stupid just for being in Egypt. Especially while there has been so much instability, and anti-American sentiment.

You did not see any of the reports which seem to confirm they were pitching their own firebombs off that roof at the Egyptian cops. These things could be found on their own Facebook pages before their arrests.

What kind of idiot parents and universities send kids to countries that have just experienced a revolution and still don't have a proper government and are run by a military junta?

i had made prior comment on these 3 a couple of days ago as i hope or it may look like i was wrong,as they are being released in such a short time i think these 3 rascals may have been watching this whole fiasco as they look like the type( yes you can profile and stereotype and also liberals have that skelly look)who were enjoying the action and hopefully not participants in it, as then they would deserve what was to come.actually i think one is sticking his tongue out and probably a future military man, american radicals dont have these qualitys, sneaky yes, gutsy no,hope im right.

On the news this morning I heard one of their Father's ranting and raving because the Egyptian police did not give them a chair to sit down on when arrrested and that he was outraged! LOL:) To me this made it clear as to why these fools would even think of committing the act they did in Egypt.

Whether or not these children did commit the alleged crimes, the fact remains they should not have been out at the demostrations, but should have remained indoors and out of sight,as the US Embassy probably strongly advised all Americans to do! Perhaps, each one of them should consider a book tour on "How I Got Stupid Overseas (and Forgot that the Bill of Rights Does Not Apply to Me While There)."

Irrespective of their guilt or innocence:
NPR's coverage included the reporter quoting one of the trio's mother to the effect that her son would never do such a thing. Great journalism. How many mothers wouldn't do the same?
The mother also thanked God that her son was released, but never questioned why God had him arrested in the first place.

not terrified to try to burn people to death with cocktails filled with gas and other mixes to cause painful and death results they enjoy doing this in a country who welcomes them there as guest to study not cause mayhem, they to fight enlist and serve your country in a real war zone or they just bring students to not serve they got a lot of growing up to do I was 18 and on omaha beach because I love my country and gave up my chance to go college and those days the school of choice was for me DREXEL.

According the news I read they allegedly threw fire bombs. They could have been just standing there watching what was going on. Can you really trust these officials? If they really did this, I assume that they wouldn't have been released.

WHY were they there in the first place? Demonstrations in foreign countries are dangerous places. This was not a kegger at Daytona Beach, but these children don't understand, and now the US State Department had to bail them out, literally and figuratively. So sad.
