Fur-Free Friday: A Look Back At Celebrities Stripping Down For PETA Ads (EXPLICIT PHOTOS)

Black Friday may be American retail's biggest shopping day of the year, but the day after Thanksgiving also marks Fur-Free Friday.

With hundreds of fur-free PETA protests scheduled around the world this year, animals rights activists will tout the message that wearing fur fuels a deadly and inhumane industry that is far from glamorous.

**Scroll down for EXPLICIT photos of past anti-fur PETA ads**

In 2010 the U.S. retail fur sales hit $1.3 billion, a 3.1% increase from 2009, according to the Fur Information Council Of America.

The Humane Society writes, "On fur factory farms around the world, millions of raccoon dogs, rabbits, foxes, mink, chinchillas, and other animals spend their lives in wire cages, only to be killed by anal electrocution, by neck-breaking, or in gas chambers."

PETA writes on its website:

When people learn that millions of innocent animals are beaten, boiled, hanged, and electrocuted for their fur every year; that each fur coat, each piece of fur lining or fur trim, and each fur cat toy represents the intense suffering of dozens of animals; and that furriers intentionally mislabel the fur of cats and dogs as fur from other species or as faux fur -- then every decent human being will want to go fur-free.

To raise the profile of the anti-fur message, PETA's iconic campaign, "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" has attracted a number of high profile celebrities to strip down in support of animal rights. Elisabetta Canalis is one of the most recent and memorable celebrities to bare it all for the animal rights organization.

With her billboards posted in Milan since September, Canalis explained to PETA her reason for posing nude:

"That is what is required to keep people's attention on such a brutal practice," she said. "These poor animals are electrocuted, skinned alive, drowned, and bludgeoned just for the sake of fashion."

Other eyebrow-raising images of celebrities posing for PETA include Khloe Kardashian's "I'd Rather Go Naked" ad, Chad Ochocinco's "Ink Not Mink" ad and Laura Vandervoort's "What Skin Are You In?" ad.

If you're heading to the malls this Black Friday, many would suggest skipping the animal skinned fashion in exchange for some cruelty-free clothing instead.

Yan Fong recently designed a series of Anti-Fur Poster to support fur free campaign launch in China on Feb 2012. “Fur free fashion had been restricted by most of the fashion capitals like Hollywood, and more and more customer care about if they are wearing real fur and supporting fur-free fashion, as well as the celebrities internationally are posting anti-fur statements.” Told by Yan Fong. Over fifty million rabbits, mink, seal, raccoons and foxes are kept in dreadful conditions in Chinese fur farms, with no animal welfare legislation in place to ensure their basic needs. They are brutally killed and often skinned whilst still alive. China has become a major producer and consumer of fur, which is most often bought by the younger generation.

Skinning alive? That is a line of BS. One typically uses a sharp knife. Who wants an animal kicking around trying to do that? Rabbits usually get their neck popped quickly. I can't vouch for other countries and their customs and I am not trying to change them.
Anal electrocution? What the heck is that all about? I think some PETA folks have watched too many movies. Bad movies.
The celebs are likely just getting attention where possible.

Yes, skinned alive. Get a clue. Watch one of the thousands of videos online. I loathe PETA by the way and even I know animals are skinned alive for fur.

David Cross. Wow. The only thing better than seeing him naked is seeing...well, just about anybody else naked. But I enjoy these Peta articles; people have such strong convictions about animal rights....or maybe they feel animals are just featured items on our God-given menu. Personally, if I was an animal (and I am), I wouldn't mind being eaten by humans or animals after living a free-range life. I guess being eaten by animals is how most critters in the wild end up. If you're an animal, this often happens when you're about 20 minutes old. Of course, being eaten by humans is different, in that they usually don't eat you alive. But hey, there are worse things....like being forced to sit in a doting human's lap getting fat until I can barely waddle around the block in some ridiculous plaid sweater, while they talk to me in a high, silly voice and put my poop in little bags. Now THAT's cruel. Unless maybe the human is Eva Mendez. Naked. Come to think of it, that's pretty cruel, too.

I'd rather look at Eva Mendez naked than wear fur.

Wearing fur is going green. The lord put these creatures on earth for our use and ethical regulated harvesting them is keeping the balance in nature and benifiting man and our enviorment. Since Peta and groups like them have started this negative campaign against fur Millions of animals have been killed on our highways because of overpopulation. They would rather see the excess population laying on a road with its intestines splayed over a 100 yards rather than ethicly harvested and put to good use. PETA and their followers are living in a bubble. Come join the real world.... Now im going to go eat a lunch of venison steak.... ummmm goooood

You are giving off two different signals as what you are trying to say. First, you use the word "ethical." What is so ethical about over-breeding animals, throwing them into cages that are too small for them, piling those cages up on top of each other, and skinning them alive in order to sell them to wannabe rich women and men? Second, why is fur even needed? It isn't needed. People have houses with heat in order to stay warm. Killing an animal for food is one thing, however "harvesting" is another. These are animals, not plants. I pity people who can't see them for what they are, and I especially pity their children.

So you're eating mink, fox, etc?
04:36 AM on 01/21/2012
Haven't tried them yet but maybe haven't been hungry either. I think the musk glands may give a tinge of flavor if not careful skinning them.

so is wearing vintage fur considered recycling?

I hope no animals were harmed in the act of all that airbrushing.

Sheesh. I'm sure many of those women were hot enough all on their own, no touch ups needed. Why make their skin look like their from another planet?

What about the animals' personal choice. If they had a choice I reckon they would choose not to be skinned alive so you could excercise your choice. The imposition here is all one sided, and the poor, raw raccoon dog that can't blink because its eyelids have gone, would probably disagree with you, if it wasn't writhing in agony. You people are heartless, flippant and so wrong

i am not used to posting on here and I would like to respectfully ask what has happened to my other posts in this topic/ I can't find them anywhere. Am I just looking in the wrong places or have you removed them for some reason. They were not rude or offensive and they contributed to the argument.

I am wondering the same. Why my post in regards to your post below isn't showing up... Huff Post: if you aren't going to allow simple debates to take place you should just close the comments section. Mrs Miggins: please google PETA kills animals to see why so many animal rights orgs and animal lovers don't agree with what PETA is doing. 95% of their adoptable animals are euthanized. Every year. They are supposed to be protecting the animals and they fail at it. I will never support PETA, however, I do volunteer at our local wildlife rescue and donate to several other reputable animal organizations.

PETA should not show pictures of naked people. They should show pictures of skinned animals.
04:41 AM on 11/28/2011
I agree, but then people would complain it's too graphic Have you seen this ad, it really gets the message across but can't be shown on TV http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR021-qyLJ8 I feel quite depressed at times about it all. People just don't get it. they would rather argue about the ad being sexist, or take a swipe at PETA, or say activists should be thinking more about human suffering. I just want to shout HELLO, we are talking about skinning creatures alive, its not about PETA

I'm a woman then it's normal that I hold on breath when I see a handsome man but sometimes when I see a beautiful woman probably I do this same. I also hold on breath on horror and I crying when I see tortured animals. Conclusion for woman which wore a fur : Do I really need this fur for this price? Definetly no! Man prefer your body than a fur wore on.

Shave the hair off the "fur" and you've got "leather". That's the material Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo and Louis Vuitton and Chanel and Dior and Ralph Lauren and etc. etc. etc. make all their handbags, shoes, wallets, coats, belts and other assorted must-have accessories with. Until you peta sympathizers quit buying any and all leather goods you're nothing but hypocrites.

Leather is a by-product of cattle used for food. I am comfortable with an ethic that allows animals to be killed for food, but does not allow animals to be killed solely for their fur. Don't see any hypocrisy there.
08:22 AM on 11/28/2011
If only it were that simple. Animlas that are killed for food are not used to make leather goods
08:09 AM on 11/28/2011
As far as I know Jimmy Choo et al don't use cats, dogs, rabbits, foxes or raccoons to make leather shoes. The leather trade is something different entirely and it is barbaric in its own way too. The subject here is the brutal fur trade and I really don't understand how any empathic person can support the skinning of live animals for any reason. Why does everyone have to be against those who are just trying to stop torture. It is not about scoring points off veggies who use leather or PETA supporters who eat meat etc etc It is about one thing, and that is stopping animals being beaten, electrocuted, hanged, scalded, strangled, stomped on and skinned WHILE THEY ARE STILL ALIVE. Can you see that this is the only thing that matters here.

Do you have any proof that skinning live animals happens on a regular basis in any fur factory? Proof that doesn't come from PETA?
