Who Is The Next Batman? Christian Bale's Replacement Will Be... (PHOTOS)

Posted: 11/27/11 10:36 AM ET

No, we haven't even seen "The Dark Knight Rises," this coming summer's epic finale of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, so we really should just be counting down to and getting excited over that film. But with Christian Bale's confirmation that the film will be his last as the Caped Crusader, we just can't help but start speculating as to who will be the next Bruce Wayne.

Bale's three film run -- the longest of the modern era -- brought a new darkness to the Dark Knight, teaming charm with intense brooding and rage. It was obviously a turn from George Clooney's regrettable one-time-only turn as Batman, in 1997, and a tougher version than Val Kilmer's "Batman Forever" from 1995. Most debates pit Bale's Batman against the version put forth by Michael Keaton, who kicked off the revamped franchise in 1989 in Tim Burton's "Batman" and then wore the cape again in the 1992 film, "Batman Returns."

Fans, then, seem to enjoy a darker Batman (with Adam West in his own campy category), and so when casting for a new star, the ability to go brooding and tough is an important attribute. As is the right age, fitness level and also ability to go debonaire in a tuxedo, Bruce Wayne's most frequent wardrobe choice.

Below, we've put together a list of some real possibilities and some longshots for the role, defending why any one of them could fit. Vote on your favorite, and debate -- or suggest your own candidate -- in the comments.

It's been a breakout year for Fassbender, who will have put out four critically acclaimed movies by the time the ball drops on December 31st. The man can certainly go dark and brooding, as audiences will soon see in 'Shame,' and he's done the comic book thing before, playing Magneto in this summer's 'X-Men: First Class.' That association shouldn't get in his way, though; plenty of stars have been involved in multiple super hero films, and X-Men is Marvel, while Batman is DC.

God i hope it wont be Fassbender. He is a great actor and doing a franchise like that is totally beneath him. It's bad enough he had to do Magneto on X men (great movie actually) but seriously, we dont want him to be yet another franchise actor. I hope he keeps it small (i.e. independent) and sincere mostly. Look at Clooney. He says he does commercials in Asia to have the money and then goes doing low budgets indies because of the art. I dont see Clooney ever turning mainstream again and i hope Fassbender remains in that caliber.

Horrible choices the Huffington Post provided. Will be difficult to step into Christian Bale's shoes. Whenever you change the actor on us, we just don't vibe with it well. The actor will have to be dark, brooding, tough and handsome. Otherwise it won't work.

I don't know what y'all are talking about. Danny Pudi IS Batman.

Correct! Christian Bale even said so for a small extra fee.

Fassbender or Hamm I can see, standard comic book hero faces, chins that would make for a Batman. I love Dexter, but can't see Hall as anything other than a likeable serial killer. The rest of the list is just jabbering.

Come on, this is a joke right? None of these guys can be Batman. Batman must be broody and complex and deep. Batman must seem cold, yet smoldering somehow. I think the best person is Jim Caviezel on Person of Interest (the Count of Monte Cristo, Deja Vu, Passion of the Christ, etc.) Jim is really underrated. He's super hot, sexy, and broody at the same time. He has the looks as well as the personality to be Batman. He would be so so perfect. Seriously,

Fassbender is the best name on the list but he is probably too big of a star. Maybe Armie Hammer... He comes across as too weak and emotional though

I hear Val Kilmer's available.

I could never take Ryan Gosling seriously as Batman. And everytime I see Armie Hammer all I think about is his character in The Social Network, and it ruins him for me.

I don't think any of the men listed are quite right for the part, especially Ryan Gosling. The person who should play the next batman is Ryan Reynolds. I would love to see his eyes and smile behind that mask and he has the perfect body for it.

Are you kidding? Ryan Reynolds is a joke, and everyone in Hollywood knows it. At least Ryan Gosling can act.
