Emma Sullivan Apology: Kansas High School Student Not Sorry About Sam Brownback Tweet

HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH   11/27/11 08:19 PM ET   AP

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas teenager who wrote a disparaging tweet about Gov. Sam Brownback said Sunday that she is rejecting her high school principal's demand for a written apology.

Emma Sullivan, 18, of the Kansas City suburb of Fairway, said she isn't sorry and doesn't think such a letter would be sincere.

The Shawnee Mission East senior was taking part in a Youth in Government program last week in Topeka, Kan., when she sent out a tweet from the back of a crowd of students listening to Brownback's greeting. From her cellphone, she thumbed: "Just made mean comments at gov. brownback and told him he sucked, in person (hash)heblowsalot."

She actually made no such comment and said she was "just joking with friends." But Brownback's office, which monitors social media for postings containing the governor's name, saw Sullivan's post and contacted the Youth in Government program.

Sullivan received a scolding at school and was ordered to send Brownback an apology letter. She said Prinicipal Karl R. Krawitz even suggested talking points for the letter she was supposed to turn in Monday.

The situation exploded after Sullivan's older sister contacted the media. Since then, Sullivan's following on Twitter has grown to about 3,000 people, up from about 65 before the tweet. She said she thinks the tweet has helped "open up dialogue" about free speech in social media..

"I would do it again," she said.

Sullivan has received emails from attorneys but is waiting to see what happens when she refuses to hand in a letter. Krawitz, her principal, told The Kansas City Star previously that the situation is a "private issue, not a public matter" but didn't return a phone message from The Associated Press at his home Sunday.

She hasn't heard from Brownback or his staff. She said she wouldn't mind sitting down and talking to the governor.

Sullivan said she disagrees with Brownback politically, particularly his decision to veto the Kansas Arts Commission's entire budget, making Kansas the only state in the nation to eliminate arts funding. Brownback has argued arts programs can flourish with private dollars and that state funds should go to core government functions, such as education and social services.

"I think it would be interesting to have a dialogue with him," she said. "I don't know if he would do it or not though. And I don't know that he would listen to what I have to say."

Sherriene Jones-Sontag, the governor's spokeswoman, told The Star previously that Sullivan's message wasn't respectful and that it takes mutual respect to "really have a constructive dialogue." Brownback's office didn't return calls or emails Sunday from the AP.

Sullivan's mother, Julie, said she isn't angry with her daughter, even though she thinks she "could have chosen different words."

"She wasn't speaking to the 3,000 followers she has now," Julie Sullivan said. "She was talking to 65 friends. And also it's the speech they use today. It's more attention grabbing. I raised my kids to be independent, to be strong, to be free thinkers. If she wants to tweet her opinion about Gov. Brownback, I say for her to go for it and I stand totally behind her."

UPDATE (Nov. 28, 2:30 p.m.): Brownback has issued a statement apologizing for his office's "over-reaction" to the tweet.

The worst thing about all of this is the awesome attention she's getting for being rude. I have no problem with her disagreeing with Gov. Brownback. But for us to cheer her for being rude and inconsiderate is a statement on why young children are so crazily rude and inconsiderate! By building this up into a massive thing, and then back-patting her for being rude will only encourage more of the same. This is the type of thing that creates 'trolls' on the internet. They think, "Gosh, the more rude and shocking I am, the more attention I'll get! Just look at that Sullivan girl!" And things escalate. It's shameful to us as a society. Her statement does not pass as 'intelligent political discourse,' and should be shrugged off. Instead, people are encouraging this behavior, and inviting more of the same. Then we wonder why politics has devolved into name-calling and gridlock. Just look at the posters on both sides on this very comments board! There is a massive lack of civility!

That's because we are more concerned about the adults involved in this situation and their abuse of power and lack of respect for rights.

So you're saying a seventeen or eighteen year old doesn't have the right to express herself/himself and if she/he says something critical of a government official it's not exercising freedom of expression, it's being rude.

Wow.

I couldn't agree more with her Mother. Emma sounds like she's got a good clear thinking head on her shoulders and is willing to stand up for what she beleives in. Maybe our polititions should pay more attention to our young thinkers and less to opportunists such as so many in state and government offices

I always knew that Sam Brownback's REAL NAME was "Yellowbelly". Most telling, is the picture of Emma...WEARING AN ARKANSAS SWEATSHIRT. There may be hope for the rest of Kansas, yet.

Prinicipal Karl R. Krawitz? I guess he's just one "K" short.

Stand tough, Emma, Brownback is a real nothing. Don't waste your time daydreaming about a dialog with the likes of your Governor - he is not given to rational conversation. Move on, find better things to do.

I can't believe there are 9,315 comments arguing about the color of an orange and the price of kidney beans in Tanzania. This whole instance is so trite.

This is the real story: "Brownback's office, WHICH MONITORS SOCIAL MEDIA FOR POSTINGS CONTAINING THE GOVERNOR'S NAME, saw Sullivan's post and contacted the Youth in Government program." She thought she was writing to 65 of her friends but her message was intercepted and she was punished for it. Now that the media has it, Gov. BrownSHIRT'S "office" apologized for "over-reacting". He violated her presumed right to privacy and is attempting to violate her right to free speech. The real headlne should be: Big Brother fascists pick a fight with a High School girl after criticism.
How much do the good people of Kansas pay "the governor's office" to monitor their private tweets while the governor is cutting funding for the arts?
This is why some people oppose some of the provisions of the Patriot Act: Government using its right to monitor for partisan political purposes a la Nixon's use of FBI files on his political enemies. Brownback should resign. All in all, a good lesson for the Youth in Government, guys!

THE REAL STORY:

Twitter is not private -- never has been!

You tweet and you are automatically making your tweet available for public cosumption and for aggregation by a search engine. Search engines collect and deliver requests from all publicly available sources (like Twitter). Many search engines (like Google) provide this service for free to anyone who requests a search.

There is no right to privacy when using Twitter (and other social media.)

No violation of right to privacy -- there IS no right to privacy when posting to publicly available social media. Why do you think companies spent millions developing and marketing social media outlets -- for your private entertainment??? LOL

Virtually every public figure (and many private figures) monitor social media. It's SOP.

POTUS' social media marketing, monitoring and engagment program is the uber monitoring system of them all -- and quite expensive (unlike those of very minor players like Brownbeck, who can successfully monitor using free search engines.)

Google "social media marketing, monitoring and engagement" to learn how acceptable -- nay, DESIRABLE -- it is considered by those who use it.

And remember, when you post to a public social media venue, you are offering your posts for public consumption.

Want to stay under the radar? Don't post.

Sorry, freedom of speech only applies if you're Tea Party. Though that limitation is not explicitly stated in the Constitution, it's what the framers intended.

For the third time, I will write the letter for her. HuffPO editors, I'm astounded that you censored both of the previous letters:

Dear gov. Brownback,

I'm sorry that you suck so bad. I'm sorry that were I to be forcibly impregnated against my will by a family memeber or some deranged criminal that I've never met you'd want the state to force me to carry the pregnancy to term.

I'm sorry that, despite a Supreme Court ruling stating otherwise, you are fighting to keep anti-sodomy laws on the books in Kansas. I'm sorry that after Barak Obama was elected you did everything in your power to block the actions of the duly elected President and the elected members of Congress. I'm sorry that you put your antipathy for your own country's President ahead of what's best for the country.

I'm sorry that you continue to publicly push for a repeal of a healthcare bill, already signed into law, to the effect of making 30 million people lose their health insurance while simultaneously raising the deficit and thereby the debt.

For all these things and more, I am truly sorry.

You suck big time,
Yours truly,
Emma

I find the comments so interesting. The disparaging comments made about an 18 year old and how awful and inappropriate her text was---------REALLY??????? Read the comments posted here by mostly older ADULTS! The Political dialogue is so over the top and full of such hatred & rage anymore, there is no easy solution to anything, but the adults should stop the current line of snotty-

I am so tired of people who think they have the right not to be offended.

This is EXACTLY why freedom of speech needs to exist. Because people may not always agree. In which case they must have to have the right to disagree!

She was making an off the cuff comment to friends not the whole world. No one, but her friends, would have know if Brownback's own people hadn't made it a big deal.
12:50 AM on 11/30/2011
Actually it was Sullivan's older sister who made it public -- reaching for that 15 minutes of "fame" for the family.

She only did that when it became evident that her sister was going to have to fight off sanctions for exercising her right to free speech. I find it creepy that Brownback's office is monitoring any tweet that mentions his name. I find it unbelievably petty that he actually went after an 18 year old girl for an off the cuff tweet that poked him. Pathetic Brownback. God help us if he ever gets in congress.

Anything done on the www is public, no matter how much you try to restrict it.
01:38 AM on 12/01/2011
Yes public, but this comment would have not been publicized if Brownback's aides had sense enough to have the appropriate response to it. Which was to ignore it instead of bringing the wrath of power down on an 18 year old.
