Gisele Named Best Green International Celebrity At Green Awards

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/27/2011 3:24 pm Updated: 11/29/2011 6:34 pm

She's gorgeous, rich and one of Brazil's most famous faces. But did you know she's also an environmental activist?

Gisele Bundchen won the awards for Best Green International Celebrity at this weekend's Green Awards in London. The award ceremony, which aims to honor creative and innovative approaches to sustainability, picks one star as the Green Celeb of the Year based on an online public vote.

We were pleasantly surprised to see the award go to Gisele, who is more of a fashion star than a Hollywood name. Turns out, the model has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) since 2009.

She's also gotten involved in Brazilian environmental causes, such as the Drop of Water Movement to prevent dam building and the Clean Water Project in her hometown of Horizontina.

She's also just one of many models who devote their time and clout to charitable causes: Modelinia's got a whole list of generous stutters, from Coco Rocha's work in Haiti to Freja Beha Erichsen's gifts to Doctors Without Borders.

Of course these models can only be so generous because they're busy working like crazy, especially Gisele. See the many, many covers of Ms. Bundench, i.e. Mrs. Brady, below.

Their new house, its all been constructed from recycled materials. solar energy, lighting systems, rainwater recovery, etc you can read about it on her blog and do some actual research before making uneducated guesses. Makes your theories fall flat. At least get some proof before speaking. http://blog.giselebundchen.com.br/en/planeta/retrospectiva-verde-3/

check it out. I’m sure more than alot of us.

She bought a whole Indian village clean drinking water. She plants trees in Brazil on her free time, with already progression of new forestation. She has a clean water project Aqua Limpa with her family since 08. Half of her money made from her sandals each year go to a specific green cause of her choice. She donated millions to Haiti,Japan and Joplin Missouri natural disasters. et al. just to name a few/

Why do people like to imply you can only be "green" if you live in a tent pitched in the middle of the woods in 1969?...Being green is also the small things in life such as recycling, turning off your lights when you don't need them on,don't allow the water faucet to keep running,etc...all those things add up. I think I will take Harvard and the UNEP's criteria for being green than a bunch of anon complainers who probably have done nothing.

Apparently they didn;t calculate the carbon footprint of her 20,000 s.f. mansion.

How does anyone that travels ( emissions) for a living, helps to process millions of tons of trees for paper for magazines and uses millions of kWh to make clothes qualify as environmentally friendly...?

Was wondering the same thing!!!!!! And I wonder what she and her husband do with all that money they rake in. It seems outragious for someone that eats nothing and just walks down a runner to make that much. It's just plain sick!!

do some research. she has about 5 brands since she was 20 yrs old and also owns a hotel in Brazil, so aside from being a mega model she's an entrepreneur and hotelier. you do the math.

It sounds like she is really trying to make a difference, although a 20,000 sq ft home can hardly be called "green". I do see she used low impact energy sources and recycled material to construct it, so I think we can let it go. However, the best thing she could do to make people aware of the greatest source of enviromental degradation is to stop saying that she wants "lots of kids". Overpopulation and the fact that there are 7 billion people on the planet fighting for shrinking resources is the worst environmental issue we have. However, just the fact she is "trying" and making people aware of issues by lending her name, is a good thing and she deserves our kudos. Thanks Gisele.

Just another reason why Tom Brady is the most envied man on earth.
04:43 PM on 11/28/2011
Oh that's right. He is envied by people who have no morals. He knocks up one woman then when she is pregnant he jumps to this super model. Yes Sir let's all have Brady's morals.

Unfortunately, people have kids out of wedlock. He does support that child. He didnt cheat on his wife, he wasnt committed to anyone at the time.

Someone with no morals would not support the child; he does.

and he didn't even know his ex was pregnant until 2 months later via new york post. Most men I know, after 2 months of being broken up from a failed relationship, are long moved on.

Since when was wearing fur and being a model for a fur company green? Fur farms are places of torture and are not green at all. Being green is respecting the environment and the wildlife that lives there.

Those poor foxes were ripped from their habitat and placed in tiny cages and then tortured and ultimately violently killed just so "Mrs. Green" can wear their skin on her back and make a few dollars by modeling for a company specializing in fur coats.

She's done more for the environment than PETA ever will. Plus, she never blew up a research facility and killed 2 researchers that were working on cancer cures as did a spin off for PETA.

so, where is the picture of fur, all I see is synthetic fur. keep your propaganda to yourself.

It sounds like you just make stuff up instead of actually relying on facts. Gisele was paid millions to model for Blackglama a company that sells real mink fur. She often wears fur on the catwalk and in her personal life.

Then there are models who refuse to wear fur like Brooklyn Decker and Christy Turlington. They have much more respect for the environment and its wildlife than Gisele has. As for the PETA thing, I have no idea what you are talking about because no one has been physically killed by the animal rights movement, let alone murdered. But I'm not the one who brought up PETA, you are. Not everyone who is for animal rights and against fur is a member of PETA. PETA does not soley represent animal rights.

The only ones being killed are the animals--innocent mink, foxes, raccoon dogs, etc... Fur is ugly on people and is only cute on the animals. It's their fur, let them keep it!

Well I can't tell you what she doesn't do (not really what this award is about to be honest) but I can tell you what she does do; She donates half the proceeds from her Ipanema sandals to green causes since 2001. She funded a whole Brazilian village to get clean drinking water. She plants trees in her native Brazil for Center of Forest Experiment of the SOS Atlantic Forest Foundation. She launched the Aqua Limpa project in 2008 with her family which aims to recover and preserve water. Her new home has been built from solar energy, special lighting systems, rainwater recovery system,80% of all mateirals used to build her home were from reused and recycled materials. you can read all about it on her blog http://blog.giselebundchen.com.br/?lang=en.

How green is it to lend your name to a green cause? Does she return milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to  the store? Does she walk up stairs instead of using escalators in  every  store and office building? Does she walk to the grocery store or climb into a 300-horsepower car
Does she wash the baby's diapers, dry his clothes on a line or in an  energy gobbling machine?Does her kid wear hand-me-downs or always brand-new clothing?  Does she have one TV/sound system in her house or a TV in  every room? In the kitchen, does she cook, blend and  stir by  hand? Does she package a fragile  item in the mail with wadded up old  newspapers and not Styrofoam or plastic bubble  wrap?  What does she use to cut the lawn, a push  mower? Does she exercise by walking everywhere or go to a health club to run on  treadmills that operate on  electricity? Does she drink from a  fountain/tap  or a plastic bottle? Does she  replace the razor blade in a razor  instead of throwing away the whole  razor just because  her blade got dull. Will her kids ride their bikes or walk to school or will they have a  24-hour driver? Poor, old, 3rd world people are through destiny more deserving of this award than a super rich super model....

"She's gorgeous, rich and one of Brazil's most famous faces. But did you know she's also an environmental activist?"

Why should I care if she's rich? Gorgeous and I can't talk to her? Her carbon footprint is probably too big to be an environmental activist, like Al Gore's.
