Bob Costas' Rant On NFL Touchdown Celebrations: Stevie Johnson's Plaxico Stunt Inspires Monologue (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/28/11 02:18 PM ET Updated: 12/27/11 08:44 AM ET

Not long after Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson mocked Plaxico Burress by pretending to shoot himself in the thigh during a touchdown celebration, he came under fire by some former players and analysts. Hall of Famers Shannon Sharpe called the celebration "classless," while ESPNNewYork's Rich Cimini dubbed Johnson "dim-witted" and a "classless punk."

At halftime of Sunday night's game between the Steelers and Chiefs, NBC's Bob Costas took a different approach and tackled the larger topic of outlandish touchdown celebrations. A surprisingly vituperative Costas lashed out at NFL players for their end zone antics before specifically taking aim at Johnson. For good measure, he also took a shot at the Kardashians.

"For those of you too busy keeping up with the Kardashians to notice, we live in a culture that in many ways grows more stupid and graceless by the moment," Costas said. "Sports both reflects and influences that trend, so on playing fields everywhere, true style is in decline and while mindless exhibitionism abounds."

Costas continued his attack on post-score antics by recounting the invention of the spike by former New York Giants wideout Homer Jones. He also stated his belief that Barry Sanders' habit of handing the ball to the referee after scoring a touchdown was far cooler than Jets' Mark Gastineau dancing after a sack.

"There is a difference between spontaneous and/or good-natured displays of enthusiasm and calculated displays of obnoxious self-indulgence," he said. "That train has already gone so far down the wrong track, there's probably no turning back. So our suggestion here is a more modest one. Hey, knuckleheads, is it too much to ask that you confine your buffoonery to situations that don’t directly damage your team? Week after week, game after game, we see guys who think nothing of incurring penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct, costing their team’s valuable yardage, even late in close games."

At long last, Costas went after Johnson for acting out Burress' gun incident in a Manhattan nightclub three years ago.

But in this case, it was Johnson, who shot himself in the foot, as his display cost his team a 15-yard penalty on the ensuing kickoff. And given a short field, the Jets proceeded to score in a critical game that wound up, 28-24, New York.

Costas then asked viewers why coaches haven't issued punishments over such antics, wondering when a coach will finally bench a player "on the grounds of pure selfishness and unprofessionalism detrimental to his team."

But what do you think? Have players taken touchdown celebrations too far? Or is this just another example of the powers that be have changed the NFL into the "No Fun League?"

I might be missing it the point here. Growing up I played football as a kid and we celebrated, my parents celebrated the coaches celebrated. So now football isn't something that is done for fun and enjoyment. We want the fans to get loud and crazy but we want the players not to show any emotions.

They say he should act as if he scored a TD before. Yeah true but y dont the fans act like they seen a TD before. Football is played on reactions and emotions and the drive to win. Its not played with the objective of a business board meeting. Lighten up people celebrate life and anything you do that makes you happy. If your kid scores a TD in little league please remind him not to be happy or celebrate, Bob Costas wouldnt like that....

I absolutely LOVE when a player celebrates after scoring when his team is down by like 30+ points! Talk about embarassing! It is also a quick indicator that they don't care about their team at all, just their own stats.

Thank You Bob!! My favorite quote from an old player about celebrations was simple and to the point: "Act like you've been there before!"

The concept of sportsmanship is universal. It doesn't belong solely to those who have played a particular game.

I would think that Mr. Costas might agree that he gets sufficient publicity without having to self-promote. He, Mr. Buck, and Mr. Musburger all think that the game revolves around them. They might benefit by spending a week or so with Vin Scully who, in my mind, is the ultimate sports narrator. Mr. Scully understands that the game is about the players, not the voice going into the microphone.

??? Self promoting? He is a sports commentator, commentating. That's his job.

Bob Costas has to be the most annoying sports analyst! I can't stand having to listen to him, he ruins the Olympics. He knows nothing about sports, all he does is sensationalize everything. And who cares what he thinks anyways! I thought it was hilarious! People need to lighten up for God sake! The guys at PTI thought is was funny as well!

I agree with Costas. Pro sports is the breeding ground of classless behavior from under educated, overpaid, Ridalin babies. Why can't the owners and coaches demand better behavior from the idiots that they pay millions to.?

I'm with you Bob, but there is no cure for stupid so I guess this is the future. Time for a Brawndo!

Headline Fail, because that is not a "scathing rant." That's not any kind of rant at all.

That's just a badly needed take-down and scolding for some really "stupid and graceless" behavior, "mindless exhibitionism," and "calculated displays of obnoxious self-indulgence."

So bravo to Costas for delivering it.

The headlines on these articles are the journalistic equivalent of the stupidity exhibited in the end zone.

"....we live in a culture that in many ways grows more stupid and graceless by the moment"

Absolutely true. Just look at the Republicans as they are the poster child for this factual sentence. As an aside, seeing as it's factual, FOX viewers will never see it.
