UK's Durham Crematorium May Sell Body Heat To Great Britain's National Grid

Durham Crematorium Turbine Energy

First Posted: 11/28/11 04:34 PM ET Updated: 11/28/11 04:34 PM ET

Bringing new meaning to the term "body heat," a UK crematorium is hoping to make some extra cash by selling energy produced during the cremation process.

If all goes as planned, the Durham Crematorium will install turbines in two of its burners and sell the excess energy to Great Britain's National Grid, The Telegraph reports.

A third burner will continue to warm the site's chapel and offices.

Engineers estimate that each turbine can generate 250 kilowatt-hours, enough electricity to power 1,500 televisions, according to The Daily Mail.

While the proposition may seem a bit morbid, the crematorium insists that most of the energy will come from gas used during the cremation process, with a negligible amount coming from the actual bodies. In addition, the innovations will help address mercury emissions escaping into the atmosphere, a common problem in UK crematoria.

"Apart from it being common sense for us to try to conserve energy, it also enables us to keep the fees down," crematorium superintendent and registrar Alan Jose said, according to The Northern Echo.

"If there is genuine spare capacity to generate electricity then we are certainly interested in investigating that. And if it was thought to be acceptable in the eyes of the public we would almost certainly pursue that," Jose added.

The Durham Crematorium wouldn't be the first facility to repurpose its excess heat. According to a Jan. 25 article from The Telegraph, the Borough Of Redditch Cemeteries & Crematorium is commissioned to use its excess energy to heat a swimming pool at nearby Abbey Stadium Sports Centre.

Will the cost of cremation decrease?

They say human bodies sit up and jump all around when they are being burned. EW
HOWEVER... the energy to burn needs to be recycled if possible. It only makes good cents. =)

Good idea. Like to see more harnessing of wasted energy.

I LOVE this!!! We're constantly fighting waste to energy incinerators because they need to burn recyclables such as paper and plastics to be economically viable. Until I can have my corpse composted, I'll opt for cremation. Heck yeah, any waste energy from the process should be used. Go Green!!

Good lord, don't let the Republicans get word of this or they'll push it as a solution to Medicare, Social Security, and renewable energy.

They should consider this here in the US. One of our fatties could power a small town for a month.

Great idea! Human bodies are useless once the owner vacates them anyway, shame to waste all that gas turning ashes to ashes and dust to dust!

Not useless at all. I'm going to the University Medical School for research and/or the training of future docs. After that, I will be elated to provide heat.

How soon until euthanasia becomes a profitable energy sector? There could be all kinds of moral issues on this one if nations begin to see the elderly as a cost and not a national treasure. Will they just reduce prices or increase their earnings percentages. It would seem donating the excess profits to charity would be a better option.

Oh please.

There is a very clear line between collecting heat from something you're already doing, and killing people to use them as fuel.

Just a bit of fun.

Per the article, very little energy comes from the actual burning of the corpse. Most of it is residual that was used to heat the ovens.

all people should be cremated ..graveyards are a total waste of perfectly good land...why would anyone want to visit their dead relatives rotting corpse? they are NOT in that body anymore ..they live on in your heart and in their children..its just another selfish human activity to make the surviving relatives feel good..think about all the wasted space devoted to rotting corpses that could be used for the living to farm or house people..someday the world will run our of space to bury people and then we will wake up and see how stupid it is and stop the practice

Ocean burials recycle the carbon back into the eco system and don't pollute the air or use vital fossil fuels...

While fossil fuels aren't vital, I agree that we shouldn't use them in cremation if we can find another way.

Cemetaries are great green zones. Why would anyone want to see them turned into housing developments?

how are they green besides the rotting corpses and caskets? they take hundreds of years to decompose and in that time can be used for nothing but a glorified gallery of gravestones..and even after they rot away people still won't allow the land to be used for anything useful to the rest of humanity who is alive and has needs

What a fantastic idea! Waste not, want not, and humans around the globe have wasted far too much already. You can also look at this from another perspective, in that it gives the recently deceased one more chance to help human beings. I personally would find it an honor!
