Fire Andy Reid? Eagles Fans Turn On Coach After Loss To Patriots

Eagles fans are increasingly unhappy with head coach Andy Reid.

PHILADELPHIA -- "Fire Andy! Fire Andy!"

Each demanding chant bellowed by fed-up Eagles fans was the most emphatic sign yet that the faithful have turned for good on coach Andy Reid. Reid, who led Philadelphia to five NFC championship games, has been booed and criticized, with calls to talk radio asking for him to resign or for management to can him.

But never had they voiced their displeasure like this.

The screams reached a crescendo late in the third quarter of Sunday's 38-20 loss to the Patriots after the Eagles failed to convert a fourth-and-1 when Vince Young's pass sailed out of bounds. At the time, Philadelphia already trailed New England by 18, and this potential TD was mostly a last-gasp effort at a respectable score.

This much was clear: The Eagles' postseason chances have dried up.

The free-agent spending spree that landed Young, Nnamdi Asomugha, Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin led to woeful results in 2011.

Reid might not get a chance to try again in 2012.

The only reason the brutal chants didn't return in the fourth quarter was because most of the 69,144 fans fled for the exits.

"You really don't hear much down there, so I didn't hear it," Reid said. "The way we played, I can understand."

DeSean Jackson heard the boos.

Jackson – the once dynamic wide receiver who showed flashes of becoming one of the franchise's greatest at that position – has turned into perhaps the most unreliable target on offense. He dropped a handful of passes and shied away from contact against the Patriots. His worst offense came when he short-armed a sure-thing touchdown catch because he heard footsteps.

Amid a contract dispute, Jackson said concern about his health was a factor in his style of play.

"Always. Always got to keep your head on a swivel," he said.

Was he worried about his health on that play?

"What'd you think?" he said as he walked away from reporters.

Jackson was inactive two weeks ago as punishment because he missed a team meeting. He is in the final year of his rookie contract and held out for 11 days during training camp. Jackson was targeted 10 times but had only four catches for 73 yards.

Jackson was the only offensive starter benched in the fourth quarter even as the game spiraled into a blowout.

Reid refused to say Jackson had been punished, insisting he wanted to give other receivers an opportunity. Jackson may have lost his chance to become one of the highest-paid receivers in the league. Each dropped catch, each mysterious benching has become magnified because of the contract dispute.

"I've got to go out and do my job," Jackson said. "Whatever happens, it's not like it's happening on purpose. Everybody has things they go through in life. Right now, it's something I've got to go through to better myself."

He vowed he would bounce back, starting Thursday night at Seattle.

"One week, it's always different," he said.

One quarter, too.

Young filled in for the injured Michael Vick for the second straight game and staked the Eagles to a 10-0 lead. He threw for a career-best 400 yards – and it could have been more had it not been for Jackson.

Young proclaimed in training camp the Eagles were a Dream Team.

At 4-7, the Eagles are anything but that.

"You couldn't even dream that record for this team with the talent we have," Jackson said.

Reid refused to rule the Eagles out of playoff contention or blame embattled defensive coordinator Juan Castillo for the wretched effort. Reid made the questionable decision to move Castillo over from offensive line coach, and it has backfired in a big way.

"It's all the way around," Reid said of the blame.

Reid was second-guessed again Sunday on how he handled LeSean McCoy. McCoy, who led the NFL with 1,019 yards rushing, had only 31 yards on 10 carries.

Young came out firing. He tossed a 22-yard pass to Brent Celek on the first play from scrimmage. Then he connected with Riley Cooper for 58 yards to the Patriots 4. McCoy ran in from the 2 to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

McCoy wasn't a factor again.

Reid did not announce a starting quarterback for Thursday. Vick broke two lower ribs in a loss to Arizona on Nov. 13. He got hurt on the second play of that game and stayed in, but hasn't practiced the last two weeks.

Cornerback Asante Samuel, a former Patriot, called this one of the most embarrassing losses of his career.

Even worse, the Eagles lost again at home. The defending NFC East champions fell to 1-5 in Philly and have dropped eight of nine at the Linc, including a playoff loss to Green Bay last January.

"You're supposed to be a great team at home, no matter what team you are," Samuel said. "For some reason, we can't get home-field advantage to work for us."

Nothing is working for the Eagles this season.

"New faces. New coaches. Takes time," Samuel said.

The Eagles are about out of time now.

Notes: Young is the sixth Eagles QB to throw for 400 yards. ... WR Jason Avant led the team with eight receptions for 110 yards and his first touchdown of the season. It was his fourth career 100-yard game.

Post game, emotions running high!

Reid has more NFC championships than anyone in the history of Philly.

Throw him out and he'll be an NFL coach the very next day.

The Pat's have one of the worst defenses in the league.
The Eagles had nothing after the 1st quarter.
They looked severely out-coached to me.

I mean there's little to defend, that was one of the worst games ever.
We cheer for Philly and Atlanta, I watched Philly until the network pulled the feed to us here in Atlanta. They swithched over to Denver San Diego.

Philly has the talent, they're just playing poorly and I don't know if you can blame it all on Coach Reid.

Penalties, balls not caught, fumbles, mistackles, lousey coverage. Half hearted play.

and instead of a "FIRE ANDY" chat how bout a 'DEFENSE" chant
09:01 PM on 11/28/2011
Because Reid hired the worst Defensive Coordinator in football so Reid is to blame for the Defense.
09:11 PM on 11/28/2011
im sure that guy isnt as bad as my colts defensive coordinator.. i honestly think if the eagles defense had a linebacker core, they would be really good

The Boston Sports Radio guys were stunned at the bad Eagles defense.
Everybody up here thought it was going to be one of the toughest games on the schedule for the Pats.

How bout the corners actually cover someone. the pass defense was suppose to be great. Brady threw for 350 yrds. Dont boo andy, he isnt the one on the field covering the recievers. if any one should be booed, its dominique-cromartie, nhamdi, and asante samuel.

McNabb's fault. Oh, sorry Eagles fans, you all can't blame him for your team's shortcomings anymore.

I'm a New England fan so that was the only Iggles game I've seen this year.
They were very badly coached for that game.
The Defense in particular seemed lost.
The best chance you have of beating Brady is to get in his face and slam the Pats recievers at the line.
There was none of that from the Eagles.

It is time for a whole new direction to this organization, as Reid shouldn't be the only one that is fired after the season. Howie Roseman took over the draft 2 years ago, and they have been 2 of the worst drafts that I can remember. Joe Banner is a great captologist, but gets too involved with the GM decisions, as he should stick to the salary cap. Lurie needs to hire a GM (like he did with Tom Modrak in 1999), and the GM will hire a coach, and then there will be some accountability. Reid and Banner have gotten too much power over the years.

What are Eagles fans looking for, a third Harbaugh brother? Just replacing a solid head coach because of dropped passes and key injuries to certain players might not be the answer. How has Marty Schottenheimer's replacement (Norv Turner) done in San Diego?

The Eagles should re-group and gear up for a run in 2012 instead of making wholesale changes, which would set them back.

Reid's been here for 13 years and couldn't get a Superbowl Parade to the city, how long do we have to wait? Should he get 15 years? 20 years? Most coaches get 5-6 years, but Reid has been ample time to win a Superbowl.
01:00 PM on 11/28/2011
Hes taken them to the playoffs consistently, he's a winner. This year has been a disaster because of the new defensive scheme, but he's far better than the other coaches in the league.

His coaching is suspect. The lack of run plays when you have the leading rusher? I recall McNabb seeming to plead for more run plays so he was not always a target. The gimmicks? Appoints as your def coordinator someone with no defense experience and who was an offensive line coach? And at the same time you are revamping the D with a lot of headline players? He has lost the faith of the fans and if you doubt that watch the stands clearing out very early in yesterdays's game.

Call me an SF honk if you want, but Reid learned under the Walsh/Holmgren coaching tree that also produced Gruden, Mariucci, Mornhinweg, Ray Rhodes, and Dick Jauron.

Reid's teams won the NFC East six out of twelve years. He didn't suddenly become incompetent. Maybe Vick won't take the next coach very far either.

I agree, putting Juan Castillo in charge of defense was a stretch. But would Philly be better off with a recycled head coach if Gruden or Cowher aren't interested?

Were they booing Andy or did they think he was Santa Claus?

Another thing, Eagles fans are quite frankly some of the worst in the league. They were booing in the first quarter when they were up 10-0 Hahah

I'll never understand how people can get upset to the point of having an ulcer over a sport, this clown looks like he's about to have a hernia. "They stole the season from us", LOL - calm down. I love my Eggles and I'm upset as everyone else, but to make a FIRE REID t-shirt and wear it to the game, yeesh.

This guy is shown every week on Postgame Live on the local Comcast Station, and it has become more of a running joke of what this particular 'angry guy' will say every week after a loss. He has got progressively more angry as he knows the more angry he sounds, the more they will keep bringing him back every week. It's his 15 minutes of fame.

You stated that Eagles fans are some of the worst in the league and then you say "I love my Eggles..." so you basically were talking about yourself.
