Gifts For Kids

Bing, beep, clang, flash. Anyone who lives with children -- or interacts with children who carry around their favorite toys -- is probably fed up with the amount of battery-operated noise that comes out of every gadget they own.

And between constant television-watching, YouTube hits and new video games, it seems completely possible for children to reach age 10 without ever playing with a toy that doesn't go "beep." The "Goodnight Moon" parody "Goodnight iPad" seems much more relevant than it's iconic predecessor. "Goodnight MacBook Air, Goodnight gadgets everywhere," reads the story. After all, some children even have video games as their namesake!

If you'd prefer to keep the eyes of the kid in your life off of a screen this holiday season, we've put together a list of handcrafted toys for kids, courtesy of Etsy.

It takes artist and mother Anna Leigh Donado about 30 minutes to assemble one of these bright non-toxic yo-yos. And even though it doesn't blink, beep or glow, the classic addictive toy will hold a child's attention for even longer. They're available in all of the colors shown above, or you can choose your own. Donado says one customer's only request for her birthday was a pink yo-yo -- and she was happy to oblige.

Great ideas you have here. It's quite difficult to determine which toys are appropriate for ages like 4 or 5. But you really gave me enough ideas on gifts for ages 4. Thanks!

I love that you are sharing handmade gifts as an option for kids. Gifts like these will be treasured for years to come and passed down to the next generation. We had several talented toy makers submit their handmade toys for a holiday feature. We wanted to sharing handmade gift ideas because it's a way to give an extra special gift—that will last. ...as long as people don't confuse 'non-noisy toys' with terrifically overpriced wooden/handmade ones, we're all good.

YES! I'm all for the non-noisy toys myself, but $30 for "play clay." No thanks. I'll take the non-gluten-free "play-doh" that smells like play-doh and not essential oils. Besides, the play-doh scent gives me more nostalgic sensations than cardamom.

My sister and I always loved playing outside when possible. I wonder what happened to kids playing with toys or outside instead of video games? Growing up we played outside all the time and if the weather was bad, we had toys to play with inside. Snow was always a favorite! Our parents had trouble getting us back in the house even when our clothes were soaked.
My fiance's adopted brother was 10 when we started dating and that kid does nothing, but play games or watch TV. I hit him with a snowball once and he cried. I was shocked since I watched my fiance and his biological brother and sister. I'm only in my 20's and I still enjoy a good snowball fight over being inside.

How about a deck of cards? Let's learn number recognition, sequence, more than less than, or simple addition.

That's an excellent idea. There are a number of children's playing cards ranging from Disney to Superheroes. I think those will be going in the stocking this year for my little one.

My kids have these chalkboard animals and LOVE them! My daughter has a set of horses and my son has a bull. They are constantly writing messages and creating fun doodles on them. I even have one for myself that I write daily messages on for the family. These are a fun, creative, and artistic take on a traditional chalkboard!

My cousin has a counter top made of chalkboard since it has a high heat resistance. Kids love it! They can actually draw on the counters and do all kinds of stuff and stay out of trouble. It actually doesn't look bad in his house; plus! It's kid safe!
