Inigo Martinez Goal: Real Sociedad Defender Scores Game-Winner From Midfield Against Real Betis (VIDEO)

Defender Scores Stunning Game-Winner From Midfield In Extra Time

It certainly seemed that a draw was about to go into the record books when the score of Sunday's La Liga League match between Real Sociedad and Real Betis was locked at 2-2 in second half injury time after the full 90 minutes had been played. But Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez had different plans. After a Betis turnover, he received a pass on the defensive side of midfield. Given the scant time remaining, it certainly seemed a harmless position and there was no immediate Betis pressure on the ball. Sensing that his opponent was set to walk off the pitch and head for the dressing room, Martinez launched a shot from about 60 yards out. His sterling strike caught opposing goalkeeper Casto Espinosa out of position. The ball sailed directly over Espinosa's head, grazed the bottom of the crossbar and fell into the net for the game-winning, extra-time goal.

"The ending to the game was just cruel," Betis coach Pepe Mel said after the match.

Although the goal was absolutely incredible, what is even more stunning is that Martinez scored an eerily similar goal less than two months ago! Down 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao in early October, Martinez scored on a perfect shot from just beyond midfield to tie the game.
