Israel: Rockets From Lebanon Hit North Of Country

Israel Rockets Lebanon

AMY TEIBEL   11/29/11 05:57 AM ET   AP

JERUSALEM — Rockets fired from Lebanon struck northern Israel early Tuesday for the first time in more than two years, drawing a burst of Israeli artillery fire across the tense border, the Israeli military said.

No casualties or major damage were reported on either side, and no one claimed responsibility for the attack. The military said at least two of the rockets landed on Israeli soil, and that Israeli guns shelled the area where the fire had originated.

The U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, said it had deployed additional troops and stepped up patrols in the area to prevent any further violence.

UNIFIL's commander, Maj. Gen. Alberto Asarta Cuevas, said in a statement that he was in close contact with Israeli and Lebanese officials. "There is a need to act with restraint and the parties have reassured me of the continued commitment to maintain the cessation of hostilities," he said.

UNIFIL has policed southern Lebanon to enforce a cease-fire that ended a bloody, monthlong war between Israel and the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah in the summer of 2006. Israeli officials said they did not believe Hezbollah was involved in Tuesday's attack.

The flare-up comes at a time when the entire region is engulfed in violence and upheaval, with thousands killed in the regime's crackdown on protesters in Syria and after popular uprisings ousted longtime rulers in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen.

The Israeli military said it did not expect Tuesday's incident to touch off a wider conflict with Lebanon. In a statement, however, it said it regarded the attack as "severe" and held the Lebanese government and army responsible for preventing rocket fire at Israel.

A Lebanese security official told The Associated Press that one rocket was fired from Lebanon and that Israel hit back with six rockets, which landed in an empty area. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Israel's Army Radio station said it was the eighth rocket attack since the 2006 war. Hezbollah has not claimed responsibility for any of the attacks, but smaller militant organizations, some Palestinian and some linked to al-Qaida, have launched rockets on several occasions.

None of the rocket attacks has caused serious casualties. But in August 2010, two Lebanese soldiers, a Lebanese journalist and an Israeli soldier were killed in a brief border clash touched off by Lebanese army fire toward an Israeli military base.

Overall, however, the border has been largely quiet but tense since the 2006 war, which was sparked by a deadly cross-border attack by Hezbollah on an Israeli military patrol.

During that fighting, Israel bombed Hezbollah's strongholds and Hezbollah barraged northern Israel with nearly 4,000 rockets.

About 1,200 Lebanese and 160 Israelis were killed in the conflict, which ended with the U.N.-brokered truce that sent thousands of Lebanese troops and international peacekeepers to south Lebanon.

Although the cease-fire agreement forbade Hezbollah to rearm, Israel contends the group has since replenished its arsenal with even more powerful weapons.

The "Brutal Regime" of Israel

--

Treats thousands of Palestinians in its hospitals AT NO CHARGE.

-

- Treats Palestinians and other Arab children with heart defects at no charge.

-

-Supplies electricity to the vast majority of Palestinians.

-

-Under this "brutal regime" Palestinian lifespan has increased by over 20 years since 1967.

--Under this "brutal regime" four new universities have opened for Palestinians.

-

-Under this "brutal regime" the literacy rate among Palestinians since 1967 has surged from 40% to over 80%.

--

This "brutal regime" eradicated malaria, which had been rampant on the west bank.

-

-Under this "brutal regime" Palestinian infant mortality dropped from 170 infant deaths per thousand to less than 60.

--

This "brutal regime" graduated the first Bedouin gynecologist. Of course she is a woman, as it is unthinkable in Arab culture for men to be gynecologists. The old Bedouin men all shook their heads and said, "For a thousand years we have had no gynecologists and we did fine." Of course women have died needlessly for a thousand years, but women are faceless in Bedouin culture, and their deaths are unimportant to these men.

--The new generation of Bedouin is inching toward modernity. Israel makes that possible as in the Israeli democracy women are equal citizens - the only country where Arabs live to embrace the equality of women.

Cyrus, being part of the coverup is wrong. There are two documentaries on the Liberty. Here is one: Dead in the Water I watched the interview with the Israeli pilot. They rode out on a boat where it happened and he recounted the event.

http://www.amazon.com/Liberty-Dead-water-Christpher-Mitchell/dp/B00007DT8I

34 Americans were killed and others were forced to live in silence and some with disability and chronic pain. Forgotten. No.

The ship had to limp into Malta with a big hole in the side. If Israel was so aware why didn't they rescue these people, bring them to safety.

Using Wiki to prove anything is ridiculous. Israel pulled a fast one then, and is capable of doing it again. Of course they apologized. They were caught.

Now who actually launched those rockets from Lebanon. It is a valid question.

Everyday Palestinian terrorists fire rockets into Israel that can hit kindergartens and schools and synagogues and hospitals.

Everyday Israelis have only 17seconds to get to an air raid shelter

Everyday Israelis live with the threat of 3 month old Jewish babies being beheaded.

Everyday Israelis live with the threat of pizza joints and buses being blown Up.

Everyday Jewish drivers are threatened with being stoned to death. Ditto Palestinian Gays.

Everyday Arab citizens of Israel get to vote, live freely, become supreme court judges, practice their religion, visit their holy sites, freely assemble, speak freely, print their thoughts in newspapers freely.

Everyday female Arab citizens in Israel get the same rights as their male counterparts.

Everyday in Israel Druze Arabs get to serve in the Israeli army with pride

This is everyday life in Israel a free and vibrant economy in a neighbourhood of hatred and prejudice.

Every day, 4 million Palestinian refugees wonder when they can return to the homes of their parents and grandparents which were unlawfully taken. These people aren't angry for no good reason ya know....

They can stop wondering. No country leaves the ancestral homes of millions of "refugees" intact for 40-60 years. By definition, the word "refugee" means "one who flees." Expecting the homes to remain as they were left--ready and waiting for descendants, none of whom are citizens of said country, is beyond unreasonable. Their anger is wildly misplaced, but "ya know" that.

they can go anytime, only the muslims are keeping them there with the fifty dollars paid for every kid who becomes a bomber or terrorist. they aren't refugees either, they were left there by the countries they came from: syria, egypt, lebonon, iraq and iran and some of the other 27 islamic countries that surround israel on three sides of its borders. refugees are fleeing from oppression from a dictator, death threats and sad living---by the way when you visit israel be sure to take in the israeli hospitals that take care of the refuggs and go to that new mall laid out for those refugees to wander around in on a saturday afternoon on the muslim side of the fence.

"The (Israeli) military stressed that Israel holds the Lebanese government responsible for the indicent" - Ynet

"(Israel) said it regarded the attack as "severe" and held the Lebanese government and army responsible for preventing rocket fire at Israel" - HP

Fair enough as Israel and the Israeli government is held responsible for every attack on Palestinian civilians in Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

And the Palestinian government is responsible for every attack on Israelis committed by their people. Works for me.

"Works for me"

So you agree that Israel is responsible for the destruction of the 2,600 Palestinian olive trees in October, the attacks on Palestinian mosques and also the recent desecration of Muslim graves vandalized near Jerusalem as well as the killing of one Palestinian civilian and wounding for 5 more.

As Israel held Lebanon responsible for these rocket attacks and "fired four artillery shells in response" I trust that you will have no objections if the Palestinian fire some rockets at Israel in reprisal for the list of Israeli attacks listed above.

I believe Syria, to gain favor with its former Arab friends, is responsible, using its proxy Hisbollah to do the dirty deed. This rocket fire was designed to distract attention from Syria's domestic turmoil. It wants to show how it alone is willing to confront Israel--not in all out war.

hezbolah doesn't want another war since, despite what they claim, the got clobbered in 2006. most likely the syrians themselves, or they got some other group that they paid to do it.

Nobody is taking the blame. I think Syria is creating disturbances either by herself or via a proxy to distract the populace. They can say we have the common enemy to battle. How can you divert us from our primary enemy.

Anytime Hizbollah wants to begin the new war, and it will, watch Unifil to run and hide as fast as they can. Nasrallah is a sicko psycho puppy who hates Jews who killed his son when he was attacking Israel. Hizbollah is an arm of Iran and anytime Iran wants to start an action against Israel look for them to sick their dogs on the Israelis. Lebanon once the jewel of the ME is now governed by the terrorists and Iran. When the next war comes, and it will because Muslims need to participate in their favorite sport of Jew killing instead of making a better life for themselves, will be fought differently by the Israelis. Last time they took pains not to attack the civilian areas where the rockets were hidden and fired from. This time the Israelis have stated that if a rocket comes from a civilian area that was cleared they are not going to be as benevolent as the last time. So first the Palestinians refuse to make peace, the Egyptians renew the Jew hate, Turkey renews the Jew hate and more attacks come from Lebanon. It is just a matter of time. With no jobs, no industry, no tech, borderline literacy, what kind of future have they made for themselves? I guess if my life was as disturbed as the inhabitants of these areas I would be mad enough to start a war again, and the Jews make such fun targets.

"Six French soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were wounded in a blast targeting two vehicles belonging to the French Battalion in the southern coastal city of Sidon. According to a witness, the bomb was planted on the side of the road and detonated by remote control."

"On May 27, a similar blast took place also on Sidon highway, which links Beirut with southern Lebanon, wounding six Italian peacekeepers."

Hezbollah should understand that targeting Israeli civilians as a mean of resistance is the same as Israel targeting Lebanese or Palestinian civilians which they always condemn, that's Hypocrisy..., their mission was already accomplished when Israel withdrew from Lebanon, it is true that Israel still occupies Shebaa farms, but that can be solved through diplomacy means as long as Israel isn't using force against Lebanon which she isn't.

Hebzollah role is over in this conflict, it should dissolve its military wing, enlist them in Lebanese army, and act like a political party, if they stayed like that, someday they will fight Lebanon authorities and declare south Lebanon as their state.

I hope when and if the syrian internal conflict ends, a new syrian leader elected by democratic means will cut military support to Hezbollah and restart peace talks with Israel, as a democratic Syria that with no ties to Hezbollah will deprive Israel of its "diplomatic leverage" they gained from Syria being a country run by a dictator and supports a terrorist entity, which will bring Syria toe to toe with Israel in the international arena which should make it easier to reach lasting peace between Israel, Lebanon and Syria.

no i am not naive, i simply read history, what you are saying is totally right, for now, but when hezbollah emerged in 80s it was simply to resist Israel invasion to Lebanon and at that time, it wasn't doing whatever Iran tells her.
02:45 AM on 11/30/2011
simply and demonstrably not true... if that was the case, since 2006 they would have displayed some behavior to support that theory, but they didn't. hezbollah and iran share many similar opinions, some common goals, much as israel and it's allies do, which doesn't mean israel is controlled by them or vice versa. that's the basis of an alliance, as it has always been throughout history, people with shared interests working together.
01:18 AM on 11/30/2011
What resistance. Israel has nothing whatsoever to do with Hizbollah. The Israelis are not in Lebanon and leave Hizbollah to kill as many Christians and Lebanese as they want. What resistance? There is no resistance. Hizbollah just hates Jews and they are itching for another round of killing Jews. Hizbollah is an arm of IRAN which hates Israel and has stated it wants the Jews wiped off the earth. They must be disarmed because they are not the army of Lebanon, only a proxy army that interferes with the legitimate government of Lebanon.
02:51 AM on 11/30/2011
do you know what a book is? you should try reading one sometime, very informative things those are. history has proven time and again that hezbollah should remain a military force until lebanese military can become competent enough to defend it's borders. other than that, hezbollah is very successful as a political party, highly popular among the shia of lebanon.

This is often how wars start: one side, intentionally, cause a "minor" incident but one that lead to massive acts of death and destruction.

This has been the case for the past 63 years in the context of the Arab Israeli conflict; 1948, 1967, 1973, 1982, 2006, 2008/9, are all dates at which the Muslim-Arabs, neighboring elements of the nation-state of the Jewish people, Israel, initiated wars from which on one benefited.

The unique element in all of them has been the fact that the party that was eager to retain peace and stability was blamed; since that party became, since the middle of last century, the Jew in society who can be blamed for nearly every ill affecting his human surrounding.

And sadly, some actually believe it...!!

So, why blame the Jews, again, without any evidence as to who caused such an explosion in an arms cache that is being held illegally...??
01:52 AM on 11/30/2011
And? Do you really think Hizbollah has the proper protocols in place to prevent large explosives from igniting? Don't read more into an accident than there is. These people are terrorists that hide their explosives in civilian areas. Probably a kid got ahold of some weapons stored in his basement apartment and began to play with them. They are terrorist thugs and these types of accidents happen all the time.
