Jack Del Rio Fired Jaguars Nfl

After several college football coaches lost their jobs on Sunday and Monday, an NFL coach has reportedly joined them in the ranks of the unemployed.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the Jacksonville Jaguars have fired veteran coach Jack Del Rio.

NFL.com reporter Jason La Confora reports that Del Rio has informed his staff of the decision.

On Sunday, the Jaguars were defeated by the Texans at home despite the fact that Houston lost quarterback Matt Leinart -- himself an injury replacement for Matt Schaub -- to injury in the first half. The loss dropped the Jags' record to 3-8. During the loss, Del Rio benched rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert during the fourth quarter. With Gabbert having been sacked six times, the move seemed as much protective as punitive.

Del Rio was in his ninth season coaching the Jaguars and was one of just four NFL coaches to have been with their current team more than eight seasons. The remaining coaches on that list are Bill Belichick, Andy Reid and Marvin Lewis.

Mel Tucker has been named interim coach.
